How to attach a DSLR Camera to a Reflector Telescope for prime viewing

  • Showing it is possible to run Prime on a reflector style telescope with a DSLR
    A camera with a mirror will not work due to you can't close focus enough. The image sensor is too far back
    Mirrorless is the only way to go

    First of all, $399?? They were so afforable back 3-4 years ago! Just bought mine last black friday for a "sale" price of $600.
    Secondly, the title of the video is perfect! Because the solution to "titles" issue (reaching focus) is solved by using a mirrorless camera. Had you titled it "attaching mirrorless..." i wouldn't have found this video. Extremely helpful!

    I have actually attached my canon 70D to my 1250mm Orion cassegrina style telescope using a t-ring. I haven’t had any focus issues with that setup and it is a mirrored camera. My scope has less resolution than your reflector though.

      Yeah, the cass telescopes are good to go. I'll be putting a vid up on the Orion Apex 127mm. Mirrored cameras work good but with reflectors it's a different story

      scannerguy1968 you should try to capture masses of lightning bugs with that high ISO. They are in season now.

    I have an Orion Observer 134mm Newtonian reflector and a Canon Rebel T2i DSLR and I have to use a Barlow lens to get focus. I also have an SvBony SV305c and an SvBony SV705c and also have to use a Barlow to get them to focus.
    Struggled for a month before I stumbled across a video that spoke to such.

    I appear to be missing the reducer part that you've got clamped in that the T Adapter screws onto, I don't suppose you know where to get this? I bought the adapter on your recommendation, and it seems great, but can't get it close enough due to not having the plate it mounts to. Any ideas?

    Excellent video showing the adapters and setup for the a7. I’m just getting started with 8 inch dobsonian and this cleared up a lot. Going to be using this video for reference thanks.

    DSLR and Mirrorless are completely different cameras. Yes, this is useful information, but I'm more worried about my DSLR being in prime focus without having to do a mod to the telescope itself. It seems I got no luck with running prime, unless I use a Barlow lens to run as close to prime as I can. Problem with a Barlow lens is the lowest it can go is 2x magnification, even tho I want none at all.
    I suggest to change the title and make note in the description about this important difference.

    Hi, your title says this will be about a DSLR, but you are using a mirrorless. Is the setup the same for a DSLR? I have a full frame DSLR and this scope.

    "TelescopeAdapters" carries both long and short 42mm and 48mm T-Rings for the E-Mount, as well as 2" UltraWide Adapters.

    It needs pointing out that a DSLR and a mirrorless camera are not the same, a DSLR stands for "Digital Single Reflex Lens" and it referring to the way the internal mirror flips up out of the way, a mirrorless doesn't have this, so it's not a reflex system (not a DSLR).

    Very good. Ive been trying to shoot the moon. Forgot i coukd change eye piece into the tube on t ring. Will try again tomorow night hopefuly

    You have show more on how to put my camera on my Galileo 6 inch telescope . Will this help in anyway to show more detail of maybe the moon! Thank you for being detail.

    Mirrorless camera is not the same as a DSLR. Bringing that into focus is much harder on a Newtonian.

    I have a XLT 150 and an m200 I tried using 3x barlow lens but the image becomes out of focus even when I adjust the focuser know on the telescope. any tips?

    I think u remember Celestron's costing a lot less. 8" Schmidt-Cassegrain is 2k? Mm. I used to have all the catalogs. And once online the dudes with the home made monster Dobsonians. Man.

    I got the same telescope, but when connecting prime directly to my Sony Nex-6 (mirrorless), it couldn't focus..the camera couldn't get in any further for the focus. Just noticed that your t-mount is shorter than mine.

    So can I not take prime focus images with a mirrored camera? I have a Canon EOS Rebel SL3 and just recently bought a t ring for it. I'm yet to try to take a picture of the moon with it because it isn't very high in the sky this time of year but I did not consider that I would need a mirrorless camera.

    hiya, so i got an 8" Orion reflector on a Sirius goto mount, i also got a canon t7i (and the t-ring and adapter set to connect the camera to the scope)...one thing is really confusing me though...
    When doing prime focus, how does the telescope magnify without an eyepiece? the size of the eyepiece aperture determines the magnification power of the scope (4mm-24mm, etc), the curved mirror only magnifies to a degree...im confused :(

      Short answer: It doesn't magnify very much in the viewfinder or on the camera's LCD. Long answer: You're putting the sensor in your camera at the exact focal length of the prime mirror (in your case 800mm), so the only thing that will affect magnification is the size of your camera sensor, in your case 23.4mm×16.7mm. Since the sensor is a rectangle, we are limited by the shorter dimension, in this case 16.7mm. So if I'm not mistaken you will get roughly the equivalent magnification as a 16mm eyepiece. Remember, the eyepiece "mm" means something totally different than the "mm" of a regular camera lens. Instead of the focal length (like with a camera lens) it refers to the diameter of the aperture of the eyepiece's inside lens, which is the size of the "slice" of the image from the mirror that you choose to magnify. The smaller the slice, the less light, but the larger you can magnify it. But in any case, magnification is not that important because you've got oodles of megapixels and you can blow it up on a computer screen pretty much as large as you want (or your sensor specs allow). On the other hand, if you just want to use your camera as an eyepiece (which I sometimes do because my eyepieces are fungus-infected), you might be a little underwhelmed.
