I am often asked, What to do when setting DJ cue points? How to set cue points? How to cue points?
This week, I teach you the most common places I put my hot cues when I am DJing. I also will teach you how to set cue points and some cue point tips you should use when mixing. I show you the placement of the hot cue on different types of music. From pop music to rap music, the dance music.
In the video, I give you a full run-through of my thought process behind where I place my hot cues and give you some top tips so you will know how to apply the same logic to putting hot cues on all of your tracks before a gig.
If you never really know where to set your hot cues before a DJ gig then this is the video for you. After you watch this you will know where to place your cue points for all your music collects in seconds.

So a lot of times I don't even have a tracklist setup I just kind of go in there and find the first song I think will do good and catch a tone or a sample or some kind of noises this triggers oh hey this song Would blend nicely let's mix into this song off of that and just go from there just run the set that way

Sorry about all the comments I just recently found you and you're one of the few DJs that I generally agree with when you're doing the little crossover drops with the cue points I was thinking exactly what you said I was like you needed to let the incoming track roll a few bars before it just drops instead of just letting it the first track run up then you hit the cue points I hate that in the way it sounds

I’ve seen a bunch of how to videos but this is the best I’ve seen. I love the “let me show you an example.” Also great tip for how to beat match a short intro/outro. I can beat match in 16 or 32 bars no problem but playing pop music even intro versions 16 bars is luxury. 8 or 4 is much more common.

You should encourage people to also use colors for their cue points for the amount of bars in each segment that the hot cue will play for. It will help the timing of transitions and layering without having to think much about it. Food for thought. And your welcome.

James Pich, I have mine set up a bit more elaborately, 2 Bars = Yellow, 4 Bars = Red, 8 Bars = Blue, 12 Bars = Orange, 16 Bars = Green, 20 Bars = Pink, 24 Bars = Cyan, 28 Bars = Light Green, 32 Bars = Magenta, and Custom = Purple (Usually with a note to let me know how many Bars. For Example, 1, 9, 8 1/2, or 64 Bars).

look at the row of switches just above the cross fader and just below the volume sliders.
these switches assign a channel to the cross fader side A or B, you can also just set the channel to "through", which just means it will always play (come "through") no matter what position the cross fader is in.

Question for DJs: If you want to play the song shortly before the phrase starts, do you remember how long it takes and count for the right time? Do you remember it for each cue point? Or what do you use to make it easier (do you write notes)? Or test it in headphones each time?
(Below I see guys like Chillum using colored cue points for this.)

    • @djjohncawley161
      @djjohncawley161 Před 4 lety +1

You can always check the cue point in headphone b4 going live with it. That Nelly 'OH' goes on the 4 count. 1 and 2 and 3 and 'OH'. The drum beat starts on the next measure. Whereas something like Biggie's Juicy would be 1 and 2 and 3 'it was all a dream', cuz the word Dream is on the 1 of the next bar. Depending on the outro song playing, the cue point may vary. Hope that helps. DjJc

In my experience, Serato has like a 65% success rate on analyzing correct bpms and it only calculates the key for like half the songs I import. I'm kind of tired of manually adjusting bpms on so many songs. I totally get what you mean, but I'm definitely going to look into getting Mixed In Key.

@8:35 I respectfully disagree, in general, with your statement. You CAN mix in a beat-less melody if the melody starts on the down beat. Its the same principle with Acapellas. I frequently throw in tracks like on top of a long outro. If you are experienced riding the pitch fader and have a great beat matching ear its a fun mix, but I guess that is another video.

@@casino54 Agree, if you start a 32 beat long beatless section 32 beats from a outro, the songs will meet and pretty much mix themselves. Before there was beat matching and metronomes it took a little confidence/practice to start it and pitch it.

Not on my XDJ 1000MK2 - so I believe also not on any other lower CDJ/XDJ. Sarcastic mode on: That would be too advanced for a > 1kEUR device - sarcastic mode off.

People look down their noses at Virtual DJ, but it bypasses all this nonsense of disconnecting the track, loading it in Mixed in Key, and reloading it in Serato. When you load a song in Virtual DJ, the BOM and key are automatically calculated.
Virtual DJ does not add cue points, however. My point is, don’t be sneezing on VDJ when it does a pretty good job on its own.
