Was too proud to apply, didn't want to be seen as disabled and now at the point I can barely do anything and have to get on SSI instead of SSDI because I don't have enough work credits due to working part-time for so long. I'm guessing you don't have a disabling condition. You might want to keep the "SHOULD" out.

I started receiving SSA in 2016, due to 2 accidents that caused an inoperable brain aneurysm, broken nose, nerve damage to my R side, head to toe and a top total humerus and shoulder break, that caused them to cut 2 sections of bone out so they could try posting and bracketing it together. They did not connect any muscle or ligaments or nerves back up as they did not think it was going to grow back together. I have also been fighting severe anxiety and depression prior to and got worse after accidents, causing PTSD. My nerve issues, balance and eye sight,(due to aneurysm), and memory has gotten worse also. 2 years ago SS sent me a letter saying I was deemed disabled and would be put on Medicare, I am now 58 years old. I have worked several jobs and filed my own taxes since I was 19 years old. The last job I was at for 11 years, prior to that I had 2 jobs at the same time, one for 10 years and one for 5 years, so I had steady income coming in for years. I also tried working after 2 years of breaking my arm, as it finally grew together after 1n 1/2 years. My bosses were very good to me and when I started getting major migraines and my shoulder joint got over worked, they moved me around to 3 different positions. The last one I loved, as it was inventory counts and sinking it into their database. But after 4 months, I had to quit, as my migraines and shoulder got worse. I ended up in surgery for my shoulder, but they can not do anything about my migraines. If I get them I just gotta be more still and in dim lights or darkness. My arm needs surgery again, but I just don’t want anymore surgery, I’ve had too many surgeries throughout life. My point is, my checks are only 380 a month and they are still coming from SSA. I questioned the attorney about it and our local SS, they both said because I divorced and got remarried, about 5 years later, that none of my work and paying into SS and Medicare counted, except for the years I’ve worked since remarried. And it didn’t matter if I was considered disabled, my checks are still going to come from SSA. I really don’t understand how it can work that way.?.?

Been on SSI for close to 20 years. When I was married and the husband worked I got 50$ @ month. After I split with him I get just enough to pay my rent( wich is the cheapest in the area and a slum Lord owns the building) and have exactly $100 left over to buy electric and clothes and any thing else like toilet paper, dish soap, laundry soap etc. Can not afford to keep a car. I get Medicaid and foodstamps. NY state really sucks.
I can't even pay my whole electric bill. My 78 year old mother has to help. She pays for My phone and tv. My health is getting worse as time goes on and moms not going to be hear forever. IV decided that I can't go on and will one day have to end this. I can't go on with the stress... There is no help left as far as financially. I hate how I have to live

No question that the SSI maximum payment of $841 per month (in 2022) is less than survival income (it equals to $10,092 per year). SSI was not intended to support a disabled claimant but the reality is that for many recipients it is their sole source of income.

I worked for 38 years, and have been unable to work for the last 5. In this time, I've applied for SSDI and been denied twice (based on missing medical info). I didn't appeal those 2 cases due to anxiety. This is my 3rd time around, and its been a year and 4 months. My status online had said 90% complete (medical portion Accepted). Then, last Thursday, it was changed to, my disability has been Approved, and a letter will be sent within the next 2 weeks, explaining my benefit. (Why not torture her for a couple more weeks for good measure!) Does anyone know if I'm going to receive less because I have 0 income over the last 5 years? For the 10 years before that, I was making in the high 60s, and my work history shows an increase in pay through the years. I heard that they base your SSDI on the last 10 years only. How unfair. I'm SO worried and anxious and can't sleep. The amount determines my life, and II haven't a clue what I may receive. Based on experience, does anyone know if it should be over a thousand a month? Thanks. Just hoping to get some sense of what to expect - ball park. (fully understanding that no one here knows anything for sure about my case)

I would like to quit the route as I am 66 and the paper bundles I have to deliver are getting too heavy for me but I'm afraid I would not have enough to live on even with SSI for the elderly. Try living on that. Luckily my bills come to less than 600 a month without my car and insurance payment. I would have to give them up to make ends meet.

Dec 2018, I just got my real estate broker license and just opened my firm. I have only 29 credit for SS so not enough for SSD. I got a stroke Dec 2018 and became disabled. SSI gave me 300. per month for a few month but said my husband was making "too much". He make on W2 24000. but our Tax return shows 17,700 because of the loss of our real estate business. They refuse to consider the loss of our real estate in the calculation, there is a lot incolved in keeping our real estate active, but I am sure they would have added if it was a "+". My husband can not work real estate as he has to take care of me as soon as he gets home from his employed job. Now Jan 2020 they competely cut me off because my husband have apply to receive his SS checks (we need it, we can not survive on 17,700 per year!) now with the 1500 per month SSA and his 17,700 a year, they figure we are like "millionnaire" or something, they cut my SSI to 0 and by doing that, I have lost my Medicaid. I am in a wheelchair, left side paralized. Something I can do? I am in Fort Lauderdale Florida

Kristina, if you are not insured for SSDI, the only way to gain credits is to work and earn additional credits. For 2017, you need $1,300 to earn one credit, $2,600 for 2, and $5,200 for 4. The most you can earn in a year is 4 credits. You should probably talk to your lawyer about trial work periods and working after a finding of disability.

Then they tell me they only go back to when they determine my disability date so you can find it for 3 years but if they decide at 2 years and 6 months that you're disabled you only get 6 months of back pay. Now I've had spine surgery complete lumbar reconstruction left knee total replacement they told me three years old check on me it's been exactly one year since my spine surgery and I am up for review already and I'm scared I'm going to lose my benefits even though I feel a little better but I'm not in any way shape or form able to work

It's insulting to refer to SSI as welfare. Not everyone's situation is the same.
Do you have any up to up-to-date videos?
I worked paid into the system since the age of 16 and while appealing and going to 2 hearings they conveniently *forgot* to send me the appeal letter ✉️ after telling me that, "you're calling for updates too much". I then allowed additional time to go by before calling again. Just to be told, "we sent you a notice, and you failed to appeal or notify us."
How can I do something I never knew about?
IMO, they deliberately didn't send me the letter, and I had to start a new application. By that time, my work credits had expired. While doing the new application, the lady never mentioned to me about the form you did a video on.
It took my husband dying and a plandemic for me to be eligible to reapply for SSI.
So yea, IMO it's insulting to be in my position and refer to SSI as *welfare* . Not everyone getting SSI is without a tax paying work history. Some of us were robbed of the chance to get it.
Lastly, I know you're only speaking on how the two are defined and most likely not your opinion of the two.
    Gratitude.

SSI is a means tested program for claimants who do not have recent earnings credits. Under SSI's rules you are allowed a whopping $20 (!) per month in income without affecting your monthly benefit. A spouse's earnings reduce the SSI payment as will most support from family. Label it however you want but Congress obviously considers SSI welfare given the harshness of the rules.

OK... i'm freaked out by all the comments I found online by people struggling to make ends meet on disability! Been dealing with what I was told were degenerative back issues for the last 4 yrs only to get blindsided by a new diagnosis of MS in 2020! It's taken 4 yrs for my Doctor to get to this complete diagnosis, and i'm still paying off $30,000 in medical debt for diagnostics, tests & medical treatment only to find out I also have MS with all it's related issues! Tried to switch careers only to realize I have cognitive issues and could not progress through the training process due to an inability to comprehend & retain new information! After talking with the SS office in my area I was told that I would only qualify for $920 per month of SSDI because I only worked part time for 4 out of the last 10 yrs!... As much as I struggle physically in my current career, (I have a small cleaning business), I fear the alternative more than the suffering I go through on a daily basis while doing my job to the best of my abilities! Thankful to God for my understanding clients and a good husband that's able bodied and is willing to make up the loss of my income from my having to go part time in order to maintain some semblance of functionality - albeit shaky at best! Still don't understand how it takes so many years to get a proper diagnosis with the technology available in the USA in the 2000's? Had I been diagnosed with MS several yrs ago my body would not have been left to degrade to this point! Being left untreated for years is a huge problem for people with MS! Proper treatment makes the difference between being left reasonably functional or being caught in a downward spiral of rapid disability!
50 yrs old and having to figure out how to reinvent myself and my career in order to keep working in some fashion or risk loosing everything! Disability is not a viable alternative when you're already struggling to pay off crushing debt!
God willing... i'll make it through somehow... or die trying!
God bless you all and best wishes for the future.

Truth is you can quit your job today and sign up for ssi and you won’t get it, there are people with real disabilities that don’t even get approved and if you do get approved you have to wait at least 2 years until you receive any money so please stop falling for the hype!! What numbers do they use to determine your monthly benefit for ssdi ? I was making 45k per year prior to getting injured. I went on long term disability with a monthly benefit of 2600 monthly. Am I required to pay back the long term disability company.

Im still confused. You helped me out alot. The judge Gave me a fully favorable decision at my hearing this morning. So will I get both back pays? SSDI and SSI?? Either way I'm looking at 24 months of payments. I deserve it. It's been rough losing everything due to being disable?

I just had my hearing for SSI and the judge asked the the VE one question, if I could hold a job in the economy if I were to miss work 2 days a month and the VE said there were no jobs. That was it. Court Adjourned. From what I hear if your VE says no jobs that’s a win, would you agree?

@@namenotimportant6838 totally agree! My judge started talking extremely fast to the VE using hyporthetic questions about would this person be able to find employment. VE says No. Judge asked another question which made me even more nervous and the VE says No. The final conclusion the Judge says I find you disable so I'm allowing you benefits. So I haven't even got the paperwork yet. My heart jump with so much joy but because everything was being recorded I had to wait to let it out. Truly blessed for this fully favorable decision. I was out of options. I even tried going back to work twice but it didn't work. I made a nice amount of Money at my previous jobs so SSDI is nowhere near my old salary. But this will at least keep food on my table while I continue treatments

@@coreybunting2752 so sorry to hear that. It sounds like you been thru alot. Medical evidence is everything when it comes to applying for SSDI. I believe your medical records will speak for itself and with said you will be approved for benefits.

Possibly - if he has a lifelong disability.
