Mark Knopfler is among the very best that the music community has to offer, no wonder he befriended Bob Dylan early on in his career. Mark’s songwriting skills were overlooked for the longest time because he is such an original voice on the guitar, most songwriters aren’t great guitarist, he is an exception. Jed is right about the album Shangri-La, it’s an excellent album that was recorded in Malibu, CA, in the famous studio of the same name, where Bob Dylan, Neil Young and others have made landmark recordings. ‘’ Song for Sonny Liston’’, comes to mind, which Mark said in an interview that Dylan really liked that song. I hope Mark would watch this video and give Jedd another shot, because that’s the kind of person Mark is, from what I know about him from being a fan of his work since I was a teenager. Great video, it’s funny with a good dose of life’s regrets that we all can relate to. God Bless us all ! 🙏

Yeah, the early 2000s were a different time. People today often forget how different it all was regarding internet connectivity and no smart phones. I still have to remind myself to check emails daily, because the damn email notification function on my (stupid) smartphone stopped working a while ago, and I can't be bothered to dig through menus of preferences to try and get it back on again. (yeah, I'm old..)
But what a story! I literally felt a gut punch when you told the part about Knopfler sending a car and having you stay over! Sorry, what a story... :/
This is great content. Otis, I love your voice in your videos, but I also love that you know to give free reign to a guy like Jedd who is a great storyteller and has stories to tell. This video is the essence of what I love about the high end of CZcams. Which I consider this to be.

Great to hear Jedd's thoughts on Mark. I think a lot of the country music world doesn't get how great of a country artist Mark is. Everybody Pays to Play is one of the great country songs ever written.
I've been a Jedd Hughes fan from day 1. His first album is one of my all time favorites. I still listen to it today.
Shangri-la was my "alarm clock" for nearly 10 years when I had to wake up for a 9-5 type job. Mark Knopfler is unmatched

Okay, so the lesson is… Don’t take your LA model girlfriend to London, and ALWAYS check emails!
We musicians aren't always astute with checking e mails, voice mails, etc.......lol As I watch this I was reminded to check my email and my Royalty Lawyer is pissed because I'm late signing a contract........lol....Time to check back in to the real world again.

It should be of no surprise that good song writing with its music will be readily understood by writers of any style. It should too quiet down the writers who snuffed Bob Dylan’s receiving the Nobel Prize for literature in 2016. Good writing passes by many whose nets to discover them have big gapping holes.

Not meeting Mark Knopfler at the time might have been a blessing in disguise especially if your girlfriend at the time was in tow!!! Making Movies by Dire Straits with Tunnel of Love and Romeo and Juliet are classics. Your wife has great musical sense and taste!!!!!!!

Did Jedd see or hear Steve Young. The great Australian novelist Tom Winton's Dirt Music is about a band in the bush playing Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt and Steve Young songs. I talked to Steve at a concert and he said Winton tried to write a TV show for him.
