Joseph, I am aware of the canine's innate abilities to catch and kill rats. However, you have organized, bred, and trained your animals to do their job much more efficiently. You should be proud. Incidentally, that looks like tons of fun!! You should bring them to Louisiana for some nutria elimination.
He had Leia take on a nutria when he visited Louisiana. It wasn't easy for a 20 lb dog, but she killed one. The video of it is on his Vimeo channek.
@@movinon1242 It was Grimlin who took out the nutria not Leia. The nutria was about the same size as Grimlin with her 12 pounds so not that high of a difference. Just only 0,3 pounds more. But Leia killed a 26,5 pound raccoon weeks ago which is not easy with her 21,5 pounds.
@@movinon1242 Thanks, I'll take a look.
@@julianswinton5355 Oops, I think you're right!

Option (C) run straight for joe so you don't have to die... At least not today
@@exploringcreation1354 lol Yeah I didn't think about that option.. Good luck running that gauntlet, rat.
@@exploringcreation1354 don't they? i assume maybe a few of the higher quality ones (read, the ones that aren't inbred/have good colors and the like) get sold to pet stores, but the vast majority of live ones probably just get killed off offscreen. i can't imagine there's that massive a demand for live rats lol.
well, maybe research uses quite a few? honestly don't know.
@@SuperExodian he explained it in one of his videos. He gives the little pinkies to a friend who has rats that raise them. And then he uses the adults for training his mink and his dogs at home. I don't know how many adults he has at a time.
Alternative plan: Self destruct.
if you watch the other videos you get the feeling Boss aims for the ones the dogs miss. he lets go of rats he caught when other dogs jump in. he reserves his energy for the ones that slip through the other dogs. like he puts teamwork above being competitive, if dogs could talk i bet Boss would be the smartest one.
I dunno Joe has said himself Sherni has the smarts! No doubt I love boss! I've been a boss fan long before Sherni existed but I got to hand it to her! She is smart!
@@exploringcreation1354 she follows her training, but she don't really understand the deal here. in the other videos you see her try to grab a rat that's already caught by another dog. a dead rat is dead, competing with the other dogs won't make the dead rat extra dead. but whatever.
Yeah I get the feeling that boss is truely like his name suggests. A boss. He doesn’t go all in for every single kill. Yet he doesnt let any rat running away succeed easily. He catches those who slip through the other dogs. Yet when tasked to do it alone. He will kill all rats with little to no effort. One by one.
I wonder if Boss is " intact", I would love to have one of his pups. Onsa was a great dog too. I still miss and think about her. Side note, that antler handle knife looked beautiful.
Yea I have noticed that alot when they are in the open field areas he sits back a lot and waits to see what slips by the other dogs.

Those rats are just plain dumb!
@@hollywood5128 "Oh you're killing Dave? Well, don't mind me. Let me just squeeze by you here."
Where else will they go? They can't leave or the dogs will get them and I'm sure that seems worse to them
They get confused. They are basically Tharn (panic struck). They smell the scent of predators everywhere. Human smells, dogs, the mink. Their senses are overwhelmed by the danger and so they can't operate properly. Like a deer in headlights goes Tharn, so we witness these rats as they are completely overwhelmed to the point of complete lack of situational awareness. All instinct that says run is being suppressed by fear.
The interspersed video of the minks going into the dark and quietly killing everything is an interesting counterpoint to the chaos above. It was a bad day to be a rat.
Notice how the rats took their chance being with mink over the craziness of the dogs! I found that interesting.
@@evac.705 they seemed to think the mink was just a really big rat. I wonder why they didn't seem to notice a difference, especially since the smell alone should tip them off, right? Maybe they thought it was just there to seek shelter form the dogs?
@@rebeccagunther4030 i was wondering the same thing. I thought maybe the rats don't have good dark vision and didn't realize the mink was right there.

@@renees766 Exactly! He wasn't rushing in like usual. That's okay, he still came in 2nd even on an off day.
My bet is, there's far too many dogs in far too little space for him to lurch after and snipe the runaways like he normally does. And since he's so non-competitive, he leaves most of the rats to the other dogs that are already on the way to catch them.
@@DinnerForkTongue i was thinking the same as you the smaller dog done good indoors while boss is epic when able to make a bigger run for the rats, you got to love boss but i was so surprised with sherni, shei was a total killer, lol

Out of curiosity, did anyone take a tally for the mink? It looked like there was some serious destruction going on under that pallet.
Well the counts for each hunter totaled to 339, and he said they caught 412 total. So that leaves 73 rats unaccounted for. Though I doubt the mink caught that many, it's certainly possible. Those guys are beasts.
@@BoomerangVillage I'm guessing that the ones that counted towards the 412 total, but that weren't counted as caught by dogs or humans, were a mix of some killed by the mink, and the rest being the babies and pinkies they doubtless found.

Severn Valley Ratters is a channel I found, that exemplifies that well, but alas, they are from UK.
Luis Pineda, there actually are more and more ratting dog groups forming around the country, you just have to know where to search for them. Unfortunately with so many people having a queasy anti-kill philosophy the people doing real good by ratting with dogs instead of poisoning tend to keep it on the down and low, not advertising openly. It’s too bad really, because their services are needed by so many farms and city neighborhoods.

Everyone talking about r a t but I’m impressed that he laid on a pile of dead rats like some god of war character
In an old video Joe said that he knew judging by the size of a colony when the ratting was starting to have a real effect on the age structure of the colony : Basically before they get hunted there comes a time where the size of the rat horde starts to stagnate because of food availability so the bigger rats by preying on the smaller ones prevent the colony from expanding. So when the rats and dogs start to catch a lot of young rats that means the old ones have been killed previously and the colony will actually shrink if you keep hinting them.
Just thought I would share that knowledge for those who didn't know.

3 mink is more than enough
Buttercup reminds me SO much of my little Eddie ... He was a bit smaller though cuz he was a Jack russell terrier and a chihuahua mix but I lost him alittle over a year ago to epilepsy... He was the best dog and my best friend I had ever had..
This is such a great channel and I have a newfound love for the American Mink. Keep up the great work.
I can't believe you get such little hate comments these days! Maybe they are just drowned out by all the support and love from all us who appreciate a good man, his good dogs, and the amazing American Mink! You go Joe!
I haven't seen one, dangit! I need some rats of my own to slay!!
I stil remember watching Sherni first ratting.... now look at her... she is such a PRO!!!
And damn Leia... 71 rats 😂🔥
All the dogs are amazing! The teamwork of minks & dogs is just perfect... 👏🏼
RIP sherni
