  • In a country where there are more pets than people, what happens if we didn't have enough vets to service all them? Because that's the crisis we're currently in -- -- many vets are giving up on their love of animals and leaving the industry due to burnout, client abuse, financial stress and poor mental health. The situation is so bad, there is a NSW parliamentary enquiry into the vet shortage.
When pet owners refuse to pay and leave their vet in debt, when vets are physically and mentally abused by their clients and when vets are twice as likely to die by suicide, how long can vets go on in a straining industry with a shattering dream?
Ilias Bakalla travels to regional and rural areas in NSW - where shortages are felt most - to speak to the last remaining vets about what could happen if nothing changes.

I really wish Vets the very best. It is so tough. They have to know so much.
The ones we have had are such high quality People.
We can rarely get a livestock Vet, and it takes years to learn issues. We do our best to get help from skilled, experienced fellow Farmers. One of the problems is simple access to stuff like antibiotics that are all that are needed, but are highly regulated.
I think it could be possible to delegate some of the Vet services to specialists that don't have the capacity to do the Uni. With Livestock it could even be taught in Ag collages.
Even an apprenticeship where a young up and coming or experienced Kid could be support in external visits.
    Good luck, Vets.

This report is shocking to me but not surprising. Vets are so much more than just ppl that help your pet at home. Vets see so much misery and abuse, their knowlege to me is much higher than a Psysician for humans for different reasons....Vets need to be payed better and the govrement should give them more time to pay back their debts during their study years, In a crisis like this vets should be freed from paying back debts at all. Plus in order to keep animals more in a better way while they alive ppl must pay more for meet, period. I`m living in Germany, when I go to the vet with my little dog I ccan hardly pay the bill as well, but somehow I do. Fact is, not everyone can afford a pet anymore today, not here in Germany at least, sad but true.
Yet I don`t think that any vet is overpaid, no not for the long hours they work and the huge amount of responsibility they have, there are many problems coming together that need to be solved soon.
So sorry for what happened to sweet Sophie, RIP and may heaven bless her wonderful parents.
