Extraordinary watching your videos. It's truly an experience to see these running, and it's fantastic you've taken the time to video them running, and an informative narration to boot.
I've often wondered why lionel went for the 6 wheel frame. The 1911 did fine with 4, and was very handsome in its sober green suit, with either thick or thin rims. And of course after only a couple of years when it became 33 the buyers likely didn't give two hoots if it was now 4 wheels, and yet, as you so astutely pointed out, would have to have cost a lot less to make then the early version.
I guess it may have given lionel the advertising edge with having "more" than the competition. And I suppose it was still early enough for companies to still be testing the waters as it were. There's that extreme reluctance from American Flyer for any of its trains to have more than 4 wheels: from what I can gather management really did not like the idea of the 3020.
I really like these and especially the 33 family, but watching your video that seesaw motion isn't a good look
    Anyway, wonderful video

They sure built 'em to last back then, whether they intended it to last over 100 years or not! It's amazing to see a toy that old still doing what it was built to do.
How many electic toys built in 2023 will still be running in 2123?
