I see a lot of people in 1.x videos talking about how much better 1.x was and how yoshi p ruined it with 2.0 and all that but... 1.x systems were super unstable and overdrawn, there was no room to expand, because the system was doing all it could to run the game as is. not to mention apparently a lot of people don't know that yoshi p was the director for 1.15 and on until 1.x shut down for 2.0 so... looking at the patch notes and whatnot, a lot of what made the 1.x FUN was... the stuff yoshi p added.

They were close to making it good, but, yeah, too little, too late, the underlying systems and coding and engine were a cluster fuck. Blowing it up and starting over just made more sense.
I’m nostalgic for 1.x because it was an evolution of XI and I think XI is the superior game with better gearing systems and horizontal progression and job systems that XIV 2.0+ completely misses. XIV is just a WoW clone with a Final Fantasy skin and story on top. It’s not bad, it just lacks the depth I crave.

@@final3119 it's definitely not a wow clone. It pulls influence from wow but that's not a bad thing. The bad thing was 14 being an 11 clone in 1.x. it was slow, frustrating, and grindy as all fuck. The best parts of 1.x came from yoshi p giving passion to the game when he joined. Pulling influence from other sources and going away from the "grind forever" content but not removing it entirely, keeping it in things like relics. It tries to be something for everyone in some ways. Tbh if you think 11 or 1.x are better games than modern 14 you're welcome to that opinion, just know it's mostly nostalgia and not because they're actually better games.

@@final3119 it's not a wow clone. like. at all. it's the same genre as wow. in that it's a tab target mmo. but considering the only thing that's the same are the general bones of the game, in that it has skills on a gcd and like, instanced dungeons and raid fights. and that gear is an important thing.
ultimately though they're very very different games, the same can't really be said for 11 and 14 1.x where the director literally just wanted to make a nicer looking version of 11, right down to having the same races with a name change.
and as far as gearing goes, it's the same boring argument as when people complain that the patch cycle is stale, it's an example of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" where in FF the systems work, and make sense, and don't require new mods to work out the meta math to figure out why you need this piece you already have but with entirely different stats that has a .00000001% chance to drop or you're complete shit.
do I hope they do something interesting with gear in 14? yeah. do I think wow is better at gear because they change up how their gear works every expansion" hell fucking no because 9/10 times they've done that it's because their gear systems are shit and the new version is just as bad if not worse

Though I can point out a million things wrong in this video, this combat seems WAAAAY more final fantasy than the current combat which is indeed WOW style combat. I mean we no longer have skill stats, weapon proficiency stats, or even elemental weaknesses. POKEMON still has elemental weakness and that is the kiddiest game there is lmao.

These fights were a HUGE challenge and you can't really SEE the gruelingly careful planning and resource management going on here. The biggest combat flaws were actually non-telagraphed AOEs and having to attempt to dodge them with realistic movement physics...meaning your character didn't run at full speed at first, nor could they simply stop on a dime. Like REAL PEOPLE, they needed to get going first, then slow to a stop when running, as well as actually TURN AROUND like real people instead of abruptly spinning on an axis like you can now. This was the biggest hurdle in every boss fight was figuring out WHERE these AOEs were and figuring out the exactly timing to get out of them without overshooting or being too slow to do so. Otherwise, nothing felt particularly janky.

Not long after that "end of era" ending played, few of us decided to give Garuda HM another go, & this time I did actually won Garuda Claw for monk, which I happily wear & screenshot-ed as my proof since this will not even carries into 2.0, not that it even matters since 2.0+ kinda dumbed down the fight anyways.

Still generally a matter of perspective. 1.0 still had a player base, there's people that might still prefer it. After all "better" is completely subjective. Granted I think SE made the right decision and I love what they ended up doing with it, some things I would have liked to keep. But there's a lot of hating going around on 1.0 and it's almost controversial to compliment anything about it. But I am not of the opinion they got it all wrong, some good ideas that were poorly executed, that weren't translated over into the new version.
I honestly would have preferred to keep open world dungeons and have fewer instanced ones. Some elements introduced I felt were playing it safe (like instanced dungeons), particularly with how other MMO's have done it. But I still much prefer it over most other MMO titles.
However, I would not go with the "it's more popular therefore better" argument (in their remaking the game to appeal to more people). Justin Beiber shows there is a fault in that way of thinking. However, I didn't play 1.0, so I do not have an opinion on which I liked better. But there were things in 1.0 I think would be cool in 2.0 and beyond.

As someone who played 1.0, it was fun but I know the difference between nostalgia and reality. The game had alot of needless grind. The was alright but too excessively slow, almost to a fault. I vividly remember the interface lag was horrendous. People were making gear macros because switching out took like 10 mins. Crafting was a mess and a confusing one at that. Leveling was just doing generic leve quests. Classes were unfinished and sometimes literally broken. You wanted to play healer? You go Thamaturge who was the best healer and dps. Archers were literally scavenging for gear. And the endgame? Just more leve quests to fill the tedium of grinding. But exploring? Also not an option because maps would be gated off by +80 mobs at random points.

i noticed in the revenge of the horde patch SE added a draw setting on ps4, set mine to high and the game looks so much better, even shows your hair wet when it rains and much better reflections that PC had when HW came out and SE added dx11 support, graphically the high draw setting makes the game look EVEN BETTER, although i thought it couldnt look any better than before because it already looked good, but now we on ps4 have it too and the fps is pretty stable small dips when a lot is going on but nothing to affect gameplay, i really dont notice it though because im having too much fun playing than paying attention to fps, yea i heard ps3 version cant really handle the game, but man the draw setting makes a big difference graphically on ps4, even my armor i have on my lvl 42 war has a lot of reflections lol! just started to get into tanking, my main is drg which is i204 atm, took a break from lvl 60s and decided to lvl other classes, have all jobs unlocked except sch, smn, whm (mch and ast) dont count since they're pretty much given to you and are straight up jobs and are lvl 30, not interested in those 2, have drk but havent ran anything with it yet, only done the first drk quest, and spent a few weeks getting all my crafters to lvl 32 and lvl 33 as well as my gatherers to almost 30.

It's so sad to read comments saying this is "too slow", or praising 2.0 for its red markers and dodge fest. 1.0 was rushed and unpolished, yes; but this combat has its roots on the FF series, specially XI, and is quite interesting once you learn the mechanics and job synergy. It is really a shame SE was unable to capture what still makes me play FFXI on a private server to this day. I wish they had made something that would make me leave Vana'diel for Eorzea.

I think XIV shifting to ARR was a good idea in and of itself. I think that shift specifically is the reason XI is still going today. FF has always been about evolving as a series. I think 1.0 XIV was trying too hard to essentially be a "sequel" to XI in terms of gameplay, and that just wasn't going to fly for the current generation of MMO gamers.

    • @kaihedgie1747
      @kaihedgie1747 Před 3 lety +4

      Because it is too slow.
Tanaka specifically said he wanted a convoluted battle system instead of something more convenient. What may have worked in the early 2000s isn't going to fly in the late 2000s and beyond. Most people who have fond memories of 1.0 didn't even remember just how bad it was until Yoshida took over during the 1.0 era.

everquest (this is your definition of old school right?) at least had you doing things during combat and paying attention. you didn't do so a majority of the time here except in instances. you think everquest would've been nearly as popular if all you did to something was auto attack?

You do realize that the BGM playing in this is exactly the same as the BGM playing in Garuda in ARR, right....? And the graphics... I really don't understand where people are saying the 1.0 graphics are better. I know the Camera angle is absolutely horrible for seeing what is really going on around you (being that you can only see the ground 5-10 feet in front of you and that's it). The UI is atrocious and hard to read and full of useless information (pop up numbers on the screen work way better than a chatlog that scrolls way too fast to read). ARR's party window is far better in functionality, target's HP meter is easier to read in ARR, etc.
