  • Here are some details of my outfit:
Rod: Echo Boost Blue, 9ft, 8-weight
    Reel: Sage Spectrum C, 7/8
Line: Rio Outbound Short, 8wt, Float/1ips/2ips
Leader: I make my own 9ft leaders from Seaguar Blue Label fluorocarbon as follows: 4ft of 15lb test tied to 3ft of 12lb test tied to 2ft of 8lb test.
    Stripping Basket: Linekurv.
The Squimp fly was originally conceived by Mike Mercer. I tie it on a size 8 Gamakatsu SS15, essentially as described by Nick Clayton in the video below. Sometimes (as in this case), I use a shell-pink saddle hackle instead of white for the collar, and use a pink bead instead of a brass one, but they all work! It’s a wonderful fly for Sea-run Cutthroat, too.

On a day like you had today, one can say you had or have everything a man could want. Thank you

A tip for some of you…
Before wading into the water, make a few short exploratory casts into the shallow stuff. I’ve caught small blackmouth and resident coho behind anglers who stomped into the water without first casting short.
Cover all the water with your cast…

Blo*dy Hell Tim! Great video! Presumably these are wet flies? Good to see you using the Gorleston UK beaching method for fish 2.

Tim, do you also catch Sea-run Cutthroat from this beach during specific months of the year?

Yes, it's well-known as a fairly good SRC beach. Spring and early fall months are most productive, but I've caught them there year-round. I favor an outgoing or low tide.

Does "resident" mean that these salmon never leave the sound for the high seas?

I couldn't tell in the video but were either of those fish clipped?
How often do you run into clipped resi Coho ?

    • @pellino57
      @pellino57 Před 2 lety

The first one was clipped, and the second was wild. I’d say a slight majority of the ones I see are hatchery fish. I understand that WDFW ensures a healthy number of residents by keeping the young fish for longer in the pens, this causes s lot of them to stay in the Sound.

Good to hear. I thought they had stopped holding them back on the pens to be resi fish. Time to go out and find some now.

What marine area is this if you don’t mind me asking?

  • @danbolton3180

Hi Tim. Just watched the first fish and noticed that you pulled the fish up to you. If you hold them in the water, they should calm down enough to get the hook out.
I'm looking into Echo for saltwater fishing marine areas 5 and 6. I'm looking at the Echo Ion XL, or for something like the Echo Boost Beach two-handed rod. Any experience with either of these? I've been out of flyfishing for 30 years, so I'll be learning over again. I've got a neck/shoulder injury from an auto accident and have been told that a two-handed rod overhand casting rod works you less.

Dan, as it happens I bought the Echo Ion XL in a 7 wt, specifically for the pink salmon which will hopefully be showing up this summer. I coupled it with a Temple Fork Outfitters BVK SD reel, which is machined-aluminum and has a sealed drag. I haven't had much opportunity to use it, but so far I really like the combination. The Ion XL appears to me to have a slightly less-fast action, and is consequently a tad more forgiving for my over-enthusiastic casts. I only have experience with the single-handed Echo Boost Blue, but that's really good too (a very fast action, though). I think Echo products represent excellent value.

Please try not to beach fish you don't plan to keep! Rubbing up on the rocks rubs off their slime coating and scales which leads them susceptible to disease

Hi Speedbird, I tried my best to net this one, but unfortunately it seemed that the quickest way to get it in was to beach it. I completely agree that handling fish as gently as possible should be a priority. In subsequent videos, I hope you'll be able to see I've now invested in a more capable net for use when salmon are around.
