The Apache really does excel at night flight. I remember when the server I play on transitioned to night and finding myself doing better at night than I did during the day. Absolutely love this helicopter.
Same for me. Always liked flying at night more, even in jets
I hate you for being that smooth with this thing. This is the hardest helicopter in DCS for me to fly.... only have like 3hrs on it but damn.
Thanks for the vid sir!
-CH47 FE Retired
Sitting here in the dark and listening to you is really a great atmosphere in the light. I like to fly in the evening hours but at night with a flashlight seems really cozy. Thank you!
It's quite an experience in VR, too :)
This is not only informative. For non DCS player, it's extremely cool :)
I’d direct the crew chief to fire it up while I finish my espresso and daily crossword.
This is becoming my favorite DCS module.
I'm still learning it and it's kicking my ass. I wish to God it had an auto hover. I've never down with a gunner and find myself getting overloaded quick.
Need that practice.
@@pjhaebe what good is a lesson if it doesn't kick your ass haha
I can say in all confidence that I could sit in that cockpit until the end of time and never get the thing off the floor.
night flight at low altitudes with enemy on the ground must be an extremely challenging task.
salute to army helicopter pilots
Outstanding! What an expert may take for granted, others may find invaluable. Again, thank you for taking the time to do these vids, and thank you for the attention to detail.
Another excellent video and just what I was hoping for, thanks Casmo!
Thank you very much for your time, effort and knowledge Casmo, it is much appreciated .. 👍
Thank you for all the effort!!
Outstanding walk-through. Your experience shines through and it is so refreshing to get a clear and concise vid like this. Appreciate it!
Thanks for this Casmo. I appreciate it.
Great content as always Casmo
Thanks for taking the time to do this!
As a prop and rotor guy when I was in, we would use the M/R brake to hold the head while we broke the torque on the stretchable bolts, and then use it later after the work was done to hold he head while we put around ~320+ftlbs of torque on the PLI washers. There is only 8 bolts that hold the halves of the head together but damn is it a lot of work to torque those bastards. You need at least 4 people but 5-6 is better. 2 to pull the torque wrench through, 2 to hold the breaker bar on the nut on the underside, and 1 or 2 to physically hold the head to keep it from turning if the accumulator was low.
Really great video! Watched the whole video and learnt a lot. Thanks
Tell me why this is the coolest video on you tube right now!! Great job Casmo!
Apache owns the night. Thanks for a bit of reality in this toy
One ofbthe best ones yet Casmo. I’m a fan of doing the full starts in dcs so this is great.
Thx for your knowledge! Amazing video, pls continue your awesome work! Greets from germany.
Excellent video, I have really enjoyed watching.
Oh my god that up-front display is filthy. Can someone please get some Windex going on over there!
THX - Sir! Awesome Tutorials at all!
Awesome. Slowly piecing together my DCS set up.
Thanks for the tutorial. I pre ordered mine but first flight was yesterday its great. I need to master flying it more stable though.
Mate, that was a thrill, thanks heaps.
ah there is a flashlight! cool! That will save me fumbling around starting in the dark. Love the content, it really helps thanks.
Best AH-64 start-up I have seen yet!!! Thanks, Casmo!
Very kind.
I agree ... loved the fact that you did the cold start in nightime, really informative and useful.
Any number of you tubers can do stuff in the daytime. 🤷🏻♂️
Thanks man nice vid hope to fly with ya in DCS.
Btw, love your lip light
Great stuff! So this is the right way... Thanks!
Mostly. I forgot to mention reset the stabilator on shut down 🤷🏻♂️
And I thought I had a pretty good start up process lol. Awesome video! See you the sky’s maybe!
Thnx finally I can turn squelch down on radio
Awesome! Can't wait to watch this one. Quick question Casmo, what does a standard traffic pattern look like in an Apache? I want to practice my chopper flying skills by doing patterns. Is it 800 ft AGL,turn crosswind at 300 ft, 90 kts at crosswind and base leg, 110 kts downwind. 450 ft at base leg? Just wondering how far downwind you go and how far abeam the runway/landing point do you recommend to go?
Deedle deedle for the algorithm
Deedle deedle
Come a long way DCS..I remember playing black shark when it first came out with track ir it was amazing
Former 68J20X1!
This Chanel is growing fast! Not many real Apache Attack pilots online. Just wish the government would let them talk about real stuff online lol I am sure there is a good reason military pilots can’t give to many facts and information to the civilian world! Either way it’s awesome watching real military pilots mess around with SIMS !
We had one take a core sample of the flight line
7:43 thanks for the explanation, I was wondering why anybody would use manual ranging over auto.
I basically just started using weapons and also began thinking "why do I always have to enter A again?", but when you think of it, it basically acts like a fixed sight with a given range that you can set it at. If you always set the same range, it's pretty much like getting used to a collimated sight in a warbirds, you'll get the hang of it eventually. Auto is practical in flat terrain only since you need to adjust your aim from the crosshair anyway as soon as the terrain level of the target is different to what's below your aircraft.
If you really want to take a precise shot at some range, you'd probably be better of doing that with the CPG using the TADS as sight anyway.
I set MAN RANG to 500m, then use AUTO RANG to get an idea as to how far a target is, then I know if I need to aim high or aim lower.
So that's why my radar altimeter wasn't working yesterday even before George had an unfortunate encouner with a shilka 😅. Thanks
Super 👍 Thanks
Oh my god, the cursor on the boresight button can actually be pressed... I was wondering why the text looked that way... And I was going crazy with the mouse so I binded a key to L6...Thanks for the tip :D
Your videos are pure drugs for us realism junkies 🤩
come on sir, ya didn't turn everything back to days! great video!
comm swap freq, love that feature like in the real RTU installed in the planes I operate
Thanks Bro. Learned some shit.
Sounds like you're rated in the Apache my man. Great vid. Regards from an old Alpha driver
Never played with the alpha. Heard the horror stories from the front seat tho haha.
@@CasmoTV yeah the Alpha was prehistoric compared to what you drive these days. But she took good care of me when asked. The front seat was only a problem if tried to take the controls without first extending the cyclic. Doh!
Fiiiinnnnneee.... I'll learn the cold start....
Remember pressing TP on the DEK and you could unlock the secret "TEST" page?
Hopefully we'll eventually be able to do HIT checks.
Thank you for the video! I noticed a master off switch in DMS page is that implemented? Also check list states to zero stab
Yes in the real aircraft you set the stab. I forgot it but also… it’s DCS.
It doesn't get any better than this for a simmer :)
What's an aux tank? *Proceeds to load 1200 rounds of 30mm HE.
@CasmoTV, I would like to ask you about "C AUX" function, inside FUEL page, I did not understand if we have to put it ON for balance internal fuel tanks or when you have external fuel tanks. Please could you tell us about it. P.D. what about "Doppler" fuction, in "UTIL" page? Thanks you!
Yes! Air conditioning system! Most important part right there
On the IHADSS when you were on the cool down I saw a temp readout under the Torque is that something we configure or does that automatically appear if the APU is on? is there a menu page on the MFD's that change / add symbiology to the IHADSS or is it all automagically there? As always great content and thanks for adding a few more lines to my startup / shutdown checklist.
It should go away. Bug.
Damn, DCS airfield lighting sucks. Cool video though. Thanks 👍
@@TFT-bp8zk I know. Ever since lock on. It just uses baked textures. It looks terrible
Doesn’t bother me and my Gtx 1060 toaster
You should see MSFS 2020 at night as well. Pitch black even with a well lighted airport like Chicago, it is horrible.
All they care about is pumping out module$
When you say NVS switch on the collective, the controls menu has several option and I can't figure out which you are talking about. What I am setting it to?
As a crew chief. I approve this message
Nice video Thanks. Two questions : do you turn on the doppler or not ? And like asked while you were streaming, at the end your acceleration cue and speed aren't in the center of your IHADSS is it a bug or does it need a reset of some sort ?
No I don’t. I don’t recall the specifics but it doesn’t help you if you have GPS and just makes you a radar contact emission.
IHADSS issue is a bug
You're not supposed to fly straight ahead. The helicopter flies best a bit to the right. Make sure you center the ball in bottom of IHADSS.
@@Saddl3r but should be centered once back on the ground and still. Wasn't talking in flight.
@@Zarma4074 Ahh yeah, sorry!
Casmo - can you explain one detail? While on the ground, the FLT page shows barometric altitude which is actually a few feet higher than airbase elevation from GPS data. Is it because the sensor on the Apache is placed around 2.5m from the ground or is it a bug in the build? If it's the first case, which altitude (and barometric pressure) should be set? The one which is already set?
Great video, very much enjoy your insights. One question though: If you are playing single player in the Hind, there is a key command which allow you as the pilot to tell the CPG to turn on weapons systems, basically conduct his power up of systems on his end. In the Apache, is there a similar key command? Or do you, in single player have to switch between pilot and CGP to do power up in both cockpits? I've not seen this sort of thing in any videos on the DCS Apache so was wondering. Does George AI (If I'm sitting in pilot's seat) conduct his start-up automatically in the CPG seat?
Seems to be doing it all his own.
Hi @CasmoTV, I would like to know when do you use red and white light. Thanks you!
Typically red at night and white during day
After reading through the comm section in the -10, I wonder how ED will tackle that.
Too bad EGI, BUCS and HIT checks aren’t yet possible. Did you just forget about XPNDR Mode 4 step and DMS fault page check on the shutdown ? 😀 J/k thank you Casmo !
At 5:21, what's the prerequisite for the map to pop? I followed the steps but mine didn't work.
Things just got real...
😅
I noticed that I can actually spool up both of the engines at the same time, is there a reason why it isn't done more? It seems to start up faster
You can’t in real life. Not enough air to spin them both up. That’s a gameism.
Hey @CasmoTV - nice Vid! I noticed you are not enabling the Doppler and you are not arming the Chaff. Why not? :)
Chaff- more of a Fence Check item
Doppler- as has been answered already a few times, seems to have not been modeled. So no point.
Many thanks for all your help. Can you please advise, is there a way to prevent engine page to pop up on the MFD when RPM gets too low during flight?
I can only imagine the answer popping up being "don't get low rotor RPM in the first place"... :)
Don’t get low RPM in the first place.
No.
As a DCS hind pilot the apache looks like a spaceship.
12:30 i believe the swap button on the radio works...at least it was working for me a few days ago on SRS. all I had to do was input a radio freq, hit the swap button and put in a new radio freq...and then it will swap between the two. thats not how it works? also at 18:53 I notice you cut fwd...about this time Im watching engine 2 kind of stall on engine start. Is there a similar problem here?
Right now there is a bug in the game that causes the second engine to stall or be sluggish on start. There's some workarounds, but it's been fixed internally already and should come out with the next hotfix / patch.
Casmo i realized that the Apache's center of gravity is far behind (at least on DCS atm), when I turn it on, I already configure it to feed the two engines in the rear cell and I put it to transfer fuel from the rear cell to the front until it dries, then I leave it to activate the transfer of fuel from the auxiliary cell to the front only if the one in front reaches the reserve. I noticed that doing this his center of gravity gets much better, before my cyclic was always all the way forward during cruise flight, what do you think about that? What did you do in real life? Thank you for this video, for all the help and for sharing your experience with us.
FIREBIRDS!
Is the "Boost pump fail" message normal on engine startup? Wags also did a startup video on the ah-64 and there were no messages like that.
Casmo, is there a way to automatically straighten the tail wheel when your stopped if it's not strait? I could of swore I saw this on a real start up when the tail wheel was canted off the right. Sorry for the nerd question. Happy New Years.
Nope. It’s a caster wheel.
@@CasmoTV Thank you.
Apologies if I didn't catch it, but how does the front cpg pilot boresight his idhass? I couldn't find a boresight feature in the weapons page, as the pilot has. Thanks in advance.
It’s exactly the same.
hay casmo, 👍 vids... could you please do a video on how to slow the Apache down without climbing 1000ft :/ when doing 130 at 50ft if I want to slow to a hover - even if I do a circle to loose speed I still end up climbing a stupid amount
Git gud.
Just kidding. You just need to take more power out or slow your deceleration (don’t pull back too hard on the cyclic)
How fast can we get in the air from a cold start please?
Why is there an option to set the time when there are GPS receivers on the aircraft? Shouldn't it take the time from those?
From what I gathered the Audio knob on the CMWS panel does nothing.
So you don’t burn your pizza.
Why does the external night vision display appear to be inverted? Coming from more of a fixed wing/fast mover background, my natural instinct when I saw that was to think _ok, I'm inverted, but I'm getting none of the tactile cues that indicate the ground is now above my head. Wassup with that?_
I noticed this same effect with the screen prompts in white that popped up. They were also inverted. Is that a glitch?
I honestly don’t understand what you’re asking.
what about the dobbler within the Utility page on the TSD?
Don’t need it
You didn't activate the Doppler on the TSD utility page, is it not needed? Thanks for the tutorial! Cleared up quite a bit!
I was wondering the same, but probably this is just a backup system in case the GPS thing fails anyway. We're not sitting in a Hiиd here after all.
Not needed
Wonder if we'll ever see an A-variant. Would really like to start seeing less of the post 2010 stuff and more of the pre 1990 stuff.
the cover of darkness right?
AH -64D HELICOPTER IS GOING BACKWARDS HOW CAN I FIX THAT I WONT TO GO FORWARD ?
Any protips on the boresighting process when using Track IR ? I find that I can only; center the IHADDS onto the circles, but not get concentric circles OR get concentric circles but the IHADDs cross are nowhere near the center of the circles.
Seems strange, I can bore site with trackir fine?... just hunch head down a bit when doing it. Are you using 6 dof or is it an older trackir or other head tracker that is only 3 dof? If only 3 dof (ie rotation only, no lateral motion) then there are key presses to move the pilot head position up/down/left/right
You might want to pause your TIR and use the RShift+Numpad keys for the adjustment as well, maybe even save a snapview once you have it aligned properly so you could always use that if doing it "properly" is too uncomfortable.
@@CakePrincessCelestia you just saved me a lot of neck pain thanks!
@@ziljanvega3879 I've been wondering the same thing! I'd always have to move my neck around to align it and thought - "that doesn't seem right, because my neck won't be at that angle when I'm flying..." :P
@@slyderace Doesn't really matter whether your neck is there while flying or not, the system just needs to make sure your head is lined up properly when boresighting. =)
Cursor enter button for boresight! Thank you! 👍😀
Wait... so whats that boresight function on the collective for? I've been using that and I could have just used cursor enter instead? So whats the boresight function on the collective for?
@@andrewbergman9315 Polarity?
Horray! I guess they fixed the startup :)
I don't think so , he skipped the part where the eng.2 ng was rising. After the the fix patch, eng. 2 doesn't go past 52 ng.
@@dudanvictor4203 Indeed. Workaround for that is to start both engines at the same time and advance to idle on both right away. Think he wanted to show the "right" way to do it, then cut in after the workaround.
@@GTRNights I found another way . Start engine 1 normally, then start engine 2 but push forward both power levers past the idle just a little bit . Now the eng.2 will power up properly.
@@dudanvictor4203 It does as long as ambient temps are cool enough, I've been able to start eng 2 in my practice missions that are about 15-20°C ambient just fine. 30°C or above (like the Syria mission) doesn't work properly though.
@@jubuttib yes I have noticed that , before the fix that wasn't a problem.
Why there's an option to change date!? Is that a time machine? :P
From playing again tonight, I noticed on start-up (hot start) the RDR ALT on the A/C page seems to remain a donut no matter how many times I pressed it. It did still seem to work as it was giving me my altitudes but, because it remained a donut I couldn't get the gun auto range to work. Am I doing something wrong or is it a server issue or a bug with hot starts. Admittedly I did only try 2 servers and both were hot starts. Anyone else noticed this though?
Bug
@@CasmoTV Thanks Casmo, had a feeling ;)
Do you know if the datalink system works? and you can send target points on the TSD?
Not yet.
Question: how do you move the LOS without moving the boresight circles?
I had to lean down alot to get the LOS centered on boresight while the circles had a similar distance between eachother.
You don't move the LOS without moving the boresight concentric circles, that's the whole point of boresighting, so it's aligned. That would defeat the entire purpose of the alignment sight.
@@GTRNights makes sense. It just looked like he was moving the LOS without moving the circles on the end of it.
@@NoFear1979 You do have to move your head around (up/down, backwards/forwards, left/right) while you turn to get everything to line up. I've disabled up/down movements on my head tracking, so I have to either move my seat/camera view up and down, or lean really far back to get them to all concentric. I have noticed that the further away you are, the less the head turning affects the rings. EDIT: Another thing that can affect is if the tracking software is trying to do some fancy neck modeling or something.
@@jubuttib Cheers. It makes sense 👍
Hi Casmo, do You have extension for Your VKB Gunfighter if not, are You using curves for cyclic?
Yes I do have an extension.
@@CasmoTV I have hard time hovering, but I don't have extension so even tiny movements around center make heli fly all over the place.
Outstanding Video. Tk you from a xgrunt
Do you engage the Doppler on start up? Or when would you use it?
Real world. Yes. DCS. doesn’t seem to affect anything.
Wags told us not to advance engine throttles into the FLY position until both OIL PSI are less than 70. Is that a kind of essential RL requirement?
Yeah this is DCS I don’t care too much about temps and pressures.
Being a former Army Apache crewmember, and now being a cybersecurity professional, I like to see what will go wrong if I do something I shouldn't. I think there's a lot of things that aren't actually modeled in the game, because I can start the engines and push them to fly right away with no consequences. In the real aircraft (I wasn't a crew chief or powerplant so just guessing) not waiting for the oil to heat up enough before advancing the throttle probably could increase wear on certain parts of the engines and might also cause seal overpressurization. Worst-case you might cause a seal to fail and have an oil leak. Might not be detected until oil pressures started dropping while in flight which would then trigger an emergency (Or even worse, start a fire!). Again, just guessing based on my limited knowledge of the Apache and my mechanical background.
