  • This Dressing Station was excavated in 1940 for use by the Royal Marines Siege Regiment.
The complex was excavated by 172 Tunnelling Company Royal Engineers as can be seen by some graffiti shown in the video.
The purpose of the Dressing Station was to assess, stabilise and sometimes perform minor surgery on any wounded soldier so that they could then be sent on to a hospital for further treatment.
There were 6 entrances into the complex with some of the entrances having rails and a pulley system to allow stretchers to be taken in and out of the complex. The main tunnel of the complex housed the wards and operating theatre. The roof was supported by girders and tin sheeting with the operating theatre having wood partitions with doors at either end and block walls as well as the reception ward at the end of it. The other tunnel was supported with timber and was used as stores.
The complex was abandoned at the end of the war with the land being returned to its owner, the surface structures for the entrances into the complex were demolished with no trace of the complex left above ground.
The Dressing Station itself is in poor condition with the timber supports having rotted away and the tin roof lining collapsing due to rust, there have also been chalk falls.
