  • I'm showing you the basics to blending colored pencils with Odorless Mineral Spirits or Odorless Paint Thinner! I've got tips and techniques for colored pencil blending perfect for a beginner! This technique works on oil or wax based pencils. I'm using my Polychromos for this demonstration but I've had great results in blending Caran d'Ache Luminance, Lyra Rembrandt Polycolor and prismacolor in this way.

    I use Zest-it blender, it is made with Orange Oil (so it smells like oranges) but the thing I like most is that it comes in a jar with a screw on lid & it has a sponge in the jar that is saturated with the blender , you just press the brush into the sponge to dampen it, there is no oversaturation of the brush & very little waste, when your sponge is losing its spirit you just put some more in the jar. I keep a little bit in a separate jar for cleaning the brush. I am sure you could put a piece of sponge in a jar with any of the other blenders .

      Just wanted to add that Zest it (the fragranced version) has a really strong smell. For me it was instant headache inducing. So much that I had to leave my drawing to dry for a few days before I could get close to it again. I don't dislike the smell or oranges (I actually love it) but I found this to be way too strong. Just wanted to put it out there for anyone sensitive to smells. I know they make a fragrance free version as well, so if you really want to try it, maybe get that one instead.

I would put down my layers think I was done then blend. I didn't go back over it so it was still grainy. It was one of those duh moments lol. Question ! Would you say that working with polychromos + paint thinner gives the same results as working with inktense pencils + water ? if not, what are the differences in terms or rendering colors, shadings etc. ? it seems like it would be a similar technique

    • @Lachri
      @Lachri  Před 8 lety +8

      Not at all. The inktense is closer to watercolor. They REALLY blend, where with colored pencils, the paint thinner is just dissolving the pigment into the paper for the most part. This gives great coverage but the term blending sort of means two different things with Inktnese vs Colored Pencil.

    • @Sakuems
      @Sakuems Před 8 lety +1

      Lachri Fine Art
      So water has more effect on inktense. I can see in this video that the paint thinner just lightly spread the pigment. It seems like with inktense you can't really add too much water but if you use too much paint thinner, it will lift the color as you said. it's really interesting to see this video, i'm definitely going to try :)

    I'm not a professional at color pencils, although it is my favorite medium, but I use to use that same paint thinner and it was alright, however I recently started using coconut oil for blending, and it has made wonders for me, the pigmentation often looks more vibrant, and I can still add layers of color pencils afterwards. I guess we all work with what we feel more comfortable with, and I love coconut oil :)

    • @SarahDavisSings
      @SarahDavisSings Před 7 lety +2

      Your local waste management site should have recommendations. I do know that most places do not want toxic chemicals going down the drain, as they could seep into the ground water supply. OMS seem to evaporate pretty quickly, so I think you could get away with just letting whatever you need to get rid of evaporate in a well-ventilated, fire-safe area (OMS are very flammable) and then just dealing with the container.

    I used mineral spirits to blend some black eyes for an owl I'm doing. I've noticed that after the piece sits for a few days, the color on the eyes seems to have almost a cracked look, similar to what mud looks like when it dries. Have you ever experienced this? If you have, is there a way to fix it? I've tried going over it with a colorless blender but after a few days, that cracked appearance is back. The paper I'm using is hot press watercolor paper. Thanks in advance!

    Skip the toxic solvents and get "water color pencil crayons" They work almost the same as regular pencil crayons but have the added benefit of allowing you to blend with a bit of added water. All you do is use a small brush (or an old dry felt marker you reuse by getting it wet) and it blends without the toxic solvents. (Odorless does not mean non-toxic)
    You can even blend small areas with your fingers with just the small amount of moisture present in your fingers/skin. They also have Oil Pastel Pencil Crayons which blend very nicely without the need to add anything.

    What was the type of brush/bristles on the brush that you mentioned? Is that preferred or required to use with the mineral spirits? Or does it not matter what type of bristles are on your brush? Thanks!

      Also - I see you leave your brush fairly dry before touching the paper with it, would you say the brush just barely needs to be damp for this to work?

      I use a taklon bristled brush most of the time. Try some different ones to see what you like best. I would avoid the softer watercolor brushes though :) As for how much paint thinner, it depends. First layers I use a lot. As I get to the final layers I have the brush just damp.

    Can anyone tell me if I can use Winsor and Newton Sansodor for blending coloured pencils? Also, which other thinners and solvents can I use of the same brand?

    Thank you so much for posting this video! :-) I've been worried about using paint thinner at all, even though it's "odorless". Now I know that I don't have to use very much at all, and the less used the better *whew!* :-) For me personally I paint in my bedroom, a closed room with no ventilation, would this product be safe for this, or would it be better to say, paint in the backyard where there's nothing but ventilation?
    Thanks again for posting this video, whether or not I start using this odorless paint thinner it has educated me quite a lot on specifically how to use the product and that it Might not be as SCARY as I thought it was. :-)

    I have a little travel set of pencils (they're cheapies from Amazon, Marco Raffine) ...cause I'm too scared to take my Poly's away with me, to blend them I use a colourless alcohol marker, it works really well and even my 12yo sister has been playing with it XD but I only use them for when I'm away or sharing with my sister, when I'm home I use paint thinner :3

      I use a colorless alcohol blender for my cheapies too lol. I like how it comes out, for the most part. I do it for coloring practice since I'm still new to coloring pencils as an art medium.
