  • In this video I'll show you have to weather a modern HO scale gondola using some very basic effects. We'll look at an acrylic fade, two-colour chipping and wear effects, and using an oil paint for dust effects. I'll also briefly cover application of graffiti and FRA reflective striping for the modern-day look.

DISCLAIMER: I am not paid to promote any specific products or brands; I just use the products I find work best for me through my experiences. There is no reason for me to promote a bad product, as then I would not enjoy using it, not like the result on my model, and not be proud of publicizing it in a video. There's also no point in me doing this to keep up relations with a company if the only benefit would be getting more of the same products that I didn't like. I have not used every product out there, but from what I have used, I keep using the products I like, and that's why I use them in my videos. You can use whatever other products you would like to and you can feel that they are better - that is your opinion, and is perfectly fine by me, thus I hope that feeling is reciprocated.

This would be one of the best weathering videos I've watched. It so refreshing to see you using artists techniques, that is, going from dark to light and using lighter tints to tone down the paint. Very well done

I model a time when there was no graffiti on any rail cars, so I don't do it. I use rust powder that I make by putting some 0000 steel wool (about 3 pieces) in a jar and fill it up with white vinegar. After about a month or two after it has turned to rust, I pour it out into a stainless steel 11x14 photo processing tray and wait until it all dries. Then using a single edge razor blade I pulverize it into a fine powder which I later use as rust. I use an Exacto (Aproxo) knife and make gouges in the plastic which i then fill up with my rust powder. After weathering, I use my airbrush and give a final coat of DullCoat. Looks real 'cause it is real. Cheers from eastern TN

Definitely a great weathering job. I must of have watched this 20 times. I am collecting the materials to start this once I find the same car. No one seems to carry this Exact Rail car. Anyway there is a local train show coming to town in July. Hopefully, I find the car. Great job.

Holy moly. The level of modeling accuracy on this gon is truly off the charts. While I confess to not liking graffiti, watching you delicately apply graffiti totally alters my perception. This is not just model railroading, it’s art. Brilliant work.

I use artists oils regularly, I use a piece of card to draw out the oil as this quickens the drying process on plastic and I've added real rust to the interior of a few gondolas from steel wool. Just leave it in a damp place for a few months! You'll get almost dust but it just has a little more substance than pure weathering powders. Superb work, I'm inspired.

An incredible “how to” video! Great explanations especially why oil & pastels.
I use brake rotor shavings which are very, very fine to sprinkle in my gons for that fine junk left behind from previous loads look. Go to your local auto parts store that turns brake rotors with an empty butter cup and ask if you can have a cup of shavings. It’s free and 1 buttercup will do a bunch of gons….
    Really great video!
