Our sin is too great. Confessing 1 or 2 sins a day is futile. Simply accepting the gift of righteousness apart from your efforts or confessions is what true repentance means. Come to Christ freely receiving grace. No attempts to twist God's hand by confessing anything.
But the purpose of confession isn’t to justification before God. It’s a tool to align the heart with God’s. A person won’t appreciate grace and be changed by it without recognizing their own sinfulness. I think that was the point of his houseplant analogy.
