How Namma Yatri Ended Ola and Uber's Dominance?

  • The video discusses the challenges faced by drivers working for cab-hailing services like Ola and Uber in India, particularly regarding commissions and delayed payments. It talks about a new business model introduced by Namma Yatri, a part of the government-led ONDC, aimed at addressing these issues. This model eliminates commissions and instead charges drivers a fixed subscription fee, offering them more control over their earnings and immediate payment from customers. Since its launch, this model has gained significant traction, with over 3 lakh drivers joining Namma Yatri, leading to its expansion into other cities.
The success of Namma Yatri's zero-commission model has put pressure on traditional players like Ola and Uber to adopt similar strategies. Rapido, another cab-hailing service, was the first to adopt this model, prompting Ola and Uber to follow suit to avoid losing drivers to competitors. This shift signifies a significant disruption in the cab-hailing industry, challenging the dominance of Ola and Uber and potentially reshaping the market dynamics.
Furthermore, Namma Yatri has announced plans to enter the cab-hailing business in Bengaluru, further intensifying competition in the sector. This move poses a significant threat to Ola and Uber, which have established themselves over the years. Ola, in particular, is gearing up for an IPO, adding more pressure on the company to adapt to changing market trends.

When I cancelled one cab, the driver called and started abusing me. Ola put a cancellation fee of ₹150 for that particular cab. When i complained on customer care, they didn't agree to wave off cancellation charge or to take action the abusive driver. I uninstalled the app after going home and paying to the driver whose cab i took. After around 1.5 year I got a mail from Ola that my all previous cancellation charges have been waved off and I should restart using Ola. But I didn't. On Rapido, you can now add a tip to increase your chances of getting a ride. Try it! When people casually spend Rs 150 on coffee or Rs 300 on a beer, we can also tip the drivers who toil in the heat for a barely livable wage.

OK, first of all your problem statement doesn't relate to my actual experience in Bangalore. I have always paid using UPI apps since every auto driver or cabbie has a QR code independent of the ride-hailing app. So they receive the payment immediately irrespective of the app used. My experience with Rapido was initially poor but since they launched the upfront tipping feature, I find I can get a ride by adding a tip that goes entirely to the driver. Sometimes, it is a fat tip if supply is short but then that is economics. I find the premise of your video somewhat surprising.

I find Namma Yatri to be a great alternative to Ola and Uber. It's simple, quick and reliable: all that I expect from a ride-booking app. To all those talking about rickshaw drivers being terrible, safety features, etc etc-- it's as simple as this: yes, I'd use public transport given a choice, but we still are reliant on autos for last-mile connectivity. Drivers being rude is NOT a problem that an aggregator can solve. And tbh, I've felt like Uber/Ola's model pushes drivers to be very brash. The way they demand cash is appalling. As for safety: basic safety features are offered by NY, but hell, I wouldn't trust any app beyond a point. NY has a lot of things it can improve on, though. Let's see how it scales

Namma Yatri sucks.... Auto drivers cancel after booking confirmation and that's not the worse issue, it takes too much time to get an auto on Namma Yatri. If you're a working professional in an IT industry and you might know the pain, during rainy season when the driver cancels or takes too much time to get a cab confirmation you're already drenched in rain for 2 hours.

It's not completely taking away the drivers yet, though. There is one more problem that people face.
Driver accepts a booking, then calls you and then cancels the call. This happens on all platforms for Bengalurians. There are two reasons for this:
    1. When a driver gets a booking, there is a window of time for him to click on the accept button. This window is a bit low for them to read the destination, especially while driving on road.
    2. Since long before these platforms, cab drivers are used to their commission being discussed on per kilometre basis. They don't understand how these platforms calculate the fares.
Due to these two issues, they started accepting every ride and then call you to know the destination. Then, the second part begins.
Because these platforms have their own algorithm to calculate the fares, and some of them run offers which affect their take home, drivers started registering with every platform.
They started to accept on every platform, then call you to know the destination. They'll then pick one which is pricier and short distance and cancel all others.
