      Your description is exactly what makes this film, in it's entirety, an exceptional piece of art.
      The men the trees and the beach and the sea are the canvas and frame of the female lives we are experiencing.
      Wonderfully deep performances in a women's film for women.👏👏👏👏

    This film has a very 70’s/80’s European vibe which is rarely seen outside of France these days. A lot of pregnant nothing gives the film weight, the abstractions the suspense. The theme - more subtle than I imagined it would be - is an important and seldom talked about topic. I know these kind of mothers and hopefully there’s some kind of redemptive process that is kick started by realizing through this important movie that they’re not the only ones who feel like unnatural mothers.

    This is one of those movies that I absolutely love but i could never recommend to a regular person. There’s so much nuance between the lines of dialogue that you really need to give the movie your undivided and there’s just not that many people who can do that for 2 hours. I hope Maggie continues to direct. She’s incredible.

      Th Ceej. It’s not your average, main stream movie. I had a feeling that this is would be so with Maggie Gyllenhaal.

That had me so worried! I loved the ending, for me that moment of lightness with the daughters stopped it being a morality tale about being a bad mum, and allowed it to simply be a vital meditation. Fyi this is based on the "The Lost Daughter" novella by Elena Ferrante. Although the novella takes place with Italian characters in Italy...but the Hollywood adaptation changes them to be American and British.

    Despite the plot holes, such as the pinecone hitting her, the worm in the doll, etc being unanswered, I really enjoyed this movie. The acting was incredible, Dakota's character made me feel anxious the whole way through, and Olivia Colman is just brilliant as always

    • @connorveach5986
      @connorveach5986 Před 2 lety +67

      Wouldn’t call those plot holes. The pinecone bruising her shoulder was weird (I can’t imagine any pinecone doing that) but that seemed there for more atmospheric or thematic reasons, like the environment was becoming actively hostile towards her. You could look at it as nature itself attacking her for leaving her children (“I’m an unnatural mother”). And the sea worm in the doll worked in a similar way: there’s something ugly and scary hiding in her past, symbolized by the doll

    • @imogen2120
      @imogen2120 Před 2 lety +13

      @@connorveach5986 you’re right! I guess i just didn’t delve into the deeper meaning of it. I think i was looking for something deeper in the meaning of those little things throughout the movie, but they were there to purely show her haunts of motherhood.

    • @Estefaniac19
      @Estefaniac19 Před 2 lety +2

      wasn't the pinecone after her first encounter with the whole family and the birthday celebration?? that was very intense.

    • @redeye1016
      @redeye1016 Před 2 lety +2

      @@connorveach5986 that’s exactly how I read it - the worm, the pinecone, the fruit that was rotting underneath.
      The pinecone and the noisy family - her tranquility being interrupted, much like her life was when her children came along.
      The fruit - very symbolic in the film of the song she used to sing with her children - but rotten underneath, like a facade that gave way to ugly truth.
      The worm - felt like neglect, because she hadn’t taken care of the doll, like her children. Worms can also parasites, which she sometimes seemed to view them as.
      Full of layers and all added to the unease. Still think it wasn’t a perfect film but I really liked a lot of it.
