Another problem I have is that the ringtone is always low by itself and I can’t adjust via the physical vol buttons. In fact, if. I ever press on the button it silences the incoming call altogether

It is iPhone’s feature. Via face recognition.
If you see the phone your ringtone will volume be lower.
If you not seen the phone (phone in your pocket) ringtone will be high volume.
