"Lonesome Friends of Science"
The lonesome friends of science say
"The world will end most any day"
Well, if it does, then that's okay
'Cause I don't live here anyway
I live down deep inside my head
Well, long ago I made my bed
I get my mail in Tennessee
My wife, my dog, and my family, uh-huh
Now Poor ol' planet Pluto down
He never stood a chance no how
When he got uninvited to
The interplanetary dance
Once a mighty planet there
Now just an ordinary star
Hangin' out in Hollywood
In some ol' funky sushi bar
The lonesome friends of science say
"The world will end most any day"
Well, if it does, then that's okay
'Cause I don't live here anyway
I live down deep inside my head
Well, long ago I made my bed
I get my mail in Tennessee
My wife, my dog and my kids, and me uh-huh
The Vulcan lives in Birmingham
Sometimes he just don't give a damn
His head is full of bumblebees
His pride hangs down below his knees
Venus left him long ago
For a guy named Mars from Idaho
The Vulcan sent a wedding gift
Three-legged stool and a wheelchair lift uh-huh
The lonesome friends of science say
"This world will end most any day"
Well, if it does, then that's okay
'Cause I don't live here anyway
I live down deep inside my head
Well, long ago I made my bed
I get my mail in Tennessee
My wife, my dog, my kids and me uh-huh
Uh-huh, uh-huh
Uh-huh, uh-huh
Those bastards in their white lab coats
Who experiment with mountain goats
Should leave the universe alone
It's not their business, not their home
I go to sleep and it never rains
My dog predicts hurricanes
She can smell a storm a mile away
That's all the news we have today uh-huh
The lonesome friends of science say
"The world will end most any day"
Well, if it does, then that's okay
'Cause I don't live here anyway
I live down deep inside my head
Well, long ago I made my bed
I get my mail in Tennessee
My wife, my dog and my family
Uh-huh, uh-huh
Uh-huh, uh-huh

Singer. Songwriter. Poet. Icon.
John Prine was an artist’s artist with a list of admirers and collaborators that cut across musical genres and generations - names like Kris Kristofferson, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt, Johnny Cash, Tom Petty, Brandi Carlile, George Strait, Kurt Vile, Miranda Lambert, The Everly Brothers, Emmylou Harris, among others.
He worked as a postman before being drafted into the army in 1966. It was as a postman that John began to write the songs that would connect with so many. He sang at Chicago folk clubs, where he was introduced to singer-songwriter Kris Kristopherson, who invited John to open for him in New York. It was there that Jerry Wexler, president of Atlantic Records, first heard Prine and offered him a recording contract. His self-titled debut album was released in 1971 and featured a list of songs now regarded as classics, including “Paradise,” “Angel From Montgomery,” “Illegal Smile,” Hello in There,” and “Sam Stone.” Prine received the first of his 13 Grammy nominations in 1972 for Best New Artist. He would record three more albums for Atlantic and another three with Asylum.
His profound impact on American music was amplified in 1981 when John co-founded Oh Boy Records, and independent label where he released most of his subsequent work and which gave voice and respect to so many fellow singers and songwriters.
In his distinguished career, John won four Grammys and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (2020). He was a three-time recipient of the Artist of the Year Award at the Americana Music Honors & Awards, which also honored him with the Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting. He won the Pen/New England Song Lyrics of Literary Excellence Award (2016) and was enshrined in the Songwriters Hall of Fame (2019). In addition, John was named Honorary Poet Laureate of Illinois (2020).
John Prine passed away on April 7, 2020 due to complications from Covid-19. The outpouring of grief and love from his fan community was staggering. Over 500,000 viewers participated in an online memorial and tribute that raised more than half a million dollars for Covid-related community causes. In 2021, the Prine family created the Hello In There Foundation to honor John’s spirit of generosity towards those in need. Fiona Prine and her sons continue to operate and expand the reach of John’s independent record label, Oh Boy Records.

Hello everyone! Thanks so much for your well wishes, I'm resting up here in nashville & can't wait to get back on the road! You can ask your questions in the chat box about the song or video and I'll be back at 3pm CST to answer as many as I can!
John Prine, it's great to hear you are keen to get back on the road.
My family will be at your show in London (England) later this year. I'm hoping we can get to meet you in person as my 11 year old son is as big a fan of you as I am.
We are looking forward to the premier this evening (8pm here). My son has had a stent at two weeks old. He doesn't remember it of course but I certainly do.
Glad you’re doing better John. Come back to Wisconsin sometime soon!
John Prine......Love This Tune ! Be Well Sir And best wishes to the Prine family ad OH Boy Records....

I've almost never cried for someone I don't know personally, but I feel like I DID know John, just as most of his fans must feel, too. He made the world such a better place by being here. That's all I can say. RIP, you beautiful soul.
Still shedding tears, this guy has been with me since 76. We have his songs and that will have to get us along
My brother love his music . My brother is on heaven now with John Prime.
John became part of my thinking in life. If that's not knowing him I don't know what is...
his music was like him talking to u it was like family dying
Adding another concert I’m going to when I get to heaven. The list keeps growing. Rest In Peace Mr Prine

Sad day today. I first heard your music in 1975 and it has stuck with me ever since. I was 23 then and when I heard Hello in There, I felt sorry for those old folks, I guess that was partly the point. The other to have some empathy....
Now I am "those old folks" and for me, it gives the song a whole new meaning. How could you have been that insightful in your 20's.....guess that was your genius. Thanks for the memories John Prine, your work here is done, may you rest peacefully.
Amen!
As long as I live I'll keep playing and singing John Prine.
I second that
You better had
Me too ~ :( ~
Still singing his song, though it's sometimes hard not crying as I do. Miss this old boy something terrible. RIP John Prine
Ditto!
RIP John Prine
John Prine...the perfect therapy for America in these troubled times
Thank you Linda
Miss you, John.
i ashamed to say that i did not cry when my dad died but i did the morning that i heard john died i never met him but i miss him PLEASE DONATE to keep his joy flowing
"Those bastards in their white lab coats"...
Thanks for all your music, stories & those 3 chords -
I also wanted to add that no one can ever claim you are not an original! Who else would write a verse including a wheelchair lift. :)
I miss you so much, John. Thank you.
The singing mailman still delivers.
John Prine you saved my life, my parents would scream at each other but play John Prine... lol And I could hear John Prine's beautiful lyrics and voice and, of course, his guitar over the screaming.... I choose to take John Prine's advice and spread love..... Somehow, God blessed me to keep on the journey, towards peace for all those who struggle for Love!
Well, Mr. Prine, I have read every comment on this thread and all I can say is that it must have been the Will of God to take you home. I have no doubt that you are with the Lord you always loved and in my heart I know you are at peace. I send love to your Spirit and to your lovely widow and family you left behind. Forever and always ❤️ T. M.
Please keep your bigotry and hatred outside of loving and peaceful communities. Sicko
John I first heard Paradise in 1977. I was 29 years old.Today, I am 72, and my heart is broken. I must have played that song thousands of times. I've traveled right. down the Green River many times. I will never get over your loss. You were, and are one of my greatest heroes! You sort of remind me of Doc Watson and brother that's a high compliment. Rest well, gentle soul.
Strangely prophetic: almost spooky.
Yes, even a Bat was included in the illustrations. The way his death got attributed to the mad scientists Covid-19 pandemic statistics, for fear mongering everyone into hiding in their homes, was criminal.
My buddy and I were playing guitars for beers in a dive bar somewhere in Northeast Ohio in the early 90's the owner said we reminded him of John Prine we had never heard of John before so he gave us a quarter and said go to the jukebox and play Sam Stone.Needless to say been a fan ever since.
oh..... man .......... John Prine .... just when I want to give up on all humanity and crawl into another deep dark hole to escape the madness; you shine some levity and escape into the equation. Thank you, Mr. Prine. heal fast and strong. we need you. Ramcey in Nashville
The first time I heard this song was a friend of mine playing it on his guitar and singing it. Then he took us to a John Prine concert where I got to meet him. This song has never left my soul. I'm getting to the "hello" myself. I work in a hospital. And this song never leaves me. Love you John Prine. Thank you
A true gift 🎁
I also live deep in my head ,
My wife of thirty eight years,
Now she's layin Dead,
Wanted cremation cause of hating the cold, Now she's gone and I just feel really old. She was seven years older than me, didn't want me to die first, leave her lonely way inside of her head. So I live here inside of my head, and she lives with me even though she's called dead, We're gonna be living here as long as I can sing this song.
Thank you John
Tripolar cause Mania and Depression aren't Enough.
She passed March 16, 2019 and I'm finally crying.
Thank You John!

I know where you're coming from. I lost my husband in October of '19. We had nobody but each other for 29 years and now I have nobody at all and I have coffee every morning with him. He's right here in his urn. 🥀🖤

My mom passed away March 13 of 2019. I feel your pain and so does my dad. Sending much love your way.
Sitting here missing him, tears r running down my face ,missing him will never end ,he’s not livin here !!!!!!
At least one song daily...
Thanks for this on a quiet night. Sometimes it feels lonely asking questions that nobody else seems to care about. We may feel lonely, but we are not alone. I bet Ptolemy sat alone wondering if he was a crazy person..
john, if youre still around... and even jf only your memory is here... i love ya! Thank you!!
The first time I saw John play live was in 1984. It was him and Steve Goodman. They played at the University of Arizona in Tucson. When I heard they were coming, I literally ran to the box office and got 4 tickets. Second row, center. I had been listening to him for almost 10 years by then, mostly while stationed in Germany in the army. To see him and Steve in person was the culmination of my music listening journey. I still have the ticket stub and have since scanned it to help preserve the memory. Thanks, John, for bringing us to this moment.
I saw John and Steve at the celebrity theater in phx many years ago. Saw John w Bonnie Raitt again w Cowboy Junkies all at the celebrity so very long ago. He was always great, funny too. Back in the days when I was young and so were they. Sue
Why does this man I've never known make me cry? And cry and cry?
Because he is singing from the heart, and our hearts respond.
He was sooooo special. 🖤
You're a national treasure man!
Uh-huh, I love John Prine and dogs. Uh-huh!
Such a wonderful wonderful artist! So sorry I only discovered John after he passed!
Thank You for the Art John 💓
You got it!
Leave those GOATS alone!
John, your spirit has moved on, and we will miss you. But your music will endure as long as there are people who listen. And listen they shall. See you on the flip side.
Spot on. Nuff said. RIP John
Godspeed John:)
John Prine. Still THE man! No-one else comes near.
Heaven. John Prine my mom my dad and my dogs and of course my lovely wife.
Thank you John.
There are no words...
Never fails. When I hear a John Prine song, I start to smile.
Can't say I smile when I hear Souvenirs, but that doesn't change it from being one of his greatest songs
These videos of Johns will make a grown man cry, if you watch the subject of the vids. His Dog floating off into heaven was too much for me.
John's passing is a loss to so many of us. Your family is in my prayers. So grateful for his wisdom, heart and playful humor. We need John today more than ever. Thank you for the music memories. Enjoy your well-deserved nine-mile long cigarette, John, and rest in peace!
How long do you suppose this would take, in earth years?
It would certainly be as task of biblical proportions, regardless of speed of consumption.
@TampaDaves ..What are ya gonna do with time, after ya bought the farm? ✌️
I love you, John.
I can't express in words or actions on how good this song is. It touches me everytime.
when the keys come in at 3.00 wow

RIP John. I hope there is more fun in Heaven for you.
Your music has been the background soundtrack of my life. I wouldn't be the same without it.
Thank you for your gift.
Dear John, what can I say? I’m 68 and you have been my constant companion through life since 1975. Your music speaks to me more than any other artist. You, Dylan and Townes are the trinity of my musical world. I can’t imagine a world without you and the music you have yet to write so I try not to think about it. God bless you John Prine....
Pop Music is terrible, country, rock and the whole lot - then one day we met John. The real deal pure n simple.
Im not sure if this is a 'country music artist', but theres a singer called rusty cage. He makes alot of songs/meme songs.
My favourites from rusty cage are this place, the lives of flies, final voyage of wailers essex, shame, gangstalkers and if all else should fail
Yet another John Prine song that I love immediately and in perpetuity.
John, your humility and humanity are an example for us all. Genius is too small a word for the songs you write. Thank you.
I kept a smile on my face throughout this entire song. I wish my grandma could've heard this because she would've gone wild haha.
I will miss you, John Prine, for all the days I have left in this world. Thank you for shining the light.
Hope you get through the pandemic fine, Mr. Prine. But even if'n you don't, we know you're fine, somewhere deep down inside all our heads.
I've been Enjoying John for over 40 years now, and he has given me many hours of Smiles and Contentment! I can only think of him with a Smile on my Face! ;-)
Then his legacy lives on. I'm sure He smiles back, friend.:)
You think he finished the 9-mile cig yet?
The Tree of Forgiveness is a perfect album. Every song's a winner.
Hey John, I’ve been a fan for about 50years. It didn’t seem that long till I did the math. There are 2 people in the world I’d love to meet. You and Paul Macartney. Your music has made my life so much sweeter. Thanks so much. I wish you nothing but the best!
The best friend I never met. John Prine was the poet of the working man. What a treat to see this man live. Bonnie Raitt and John together were magical. I'm glad his family is putting his music out there for another generation.
Hello Linda 👋
Amen.
Our John. He pulled from a palette of colored words that painted 3-d songs. His songs take me back to summer days in a field of sourgrass surrounded with honeysuckle. I'm there now
He was a true artist that painted with lyrics ..….Thank you John for leaving us with all these masterpieces. RIP.
Of all the great lines in your songs . one that comes to mind is Sally used to play with hoopla hoops now she tells her problems to therapy groups .
Uh huh, uh huh 🎶
Thank you John, you made my world a richer place, too that I shed a tear, raise my glass and say THANK YOU
I’ll always live deep in my own head to, and I’ll always have John’s music to keep me company.
RIP JOHN THE WORLD WAS A LOT BETTER PLACE WITH YOU IN IT! YOUR MUSIC WILL LIVE FOREVER! THANK YOU FOR ALL THE SOUVENIRS! GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY!

Thanks for the music . Been a fan since back in 72 or 73 when first saw you at a little place in mass ,Music Inn ,an outside place where back then concerts were relaxing and fun ..Thanks for all the tunes most of which gave us all a smile...
You are watching us now Mr John Prine. R I P. SIR.
Been listening to John Prine for years the unique thing about his songs that i have found the songs i dont at first care for usually become my favorites this is another example of that the first one for me was sweet revenge years ago when I first heard it it just didn't jive with me then one day things changed and it meant so much to me and still dose today the only thing I can compare this to is the writings of the Bible as i study it i may not get a particular passage but then it hits me i believe John and Hank Williams SR ARE UP in heaven cracking jokes and playing music making GOD smile see you brothers when I get there
only just discovered this guy about 4 years ago ,even my little grandkids ask me to put on his songs when we are out for a drive ,,he sings things we can relate to wether it be happy or sad
I miss you so much man. Thank you for the soul and message you generously shared with us for decades. They will stay with us forever.

In '90's I'd lived in Memphis for a good number of yrs & people always asked if I listened to John Prine & it wasn't but within the last six years I came to appreciate his musical talent.
Sending Love to you John...
I‘ve heard his song ‚Day is done‘ on a TV series called ‚My name is Earl‘ when I was 15 I guess. I searched who wrote that song. Such a simple sounding thing taking you away to a different universe of thoughts. Then I found out it was John Prine. I listened to a lot of his songs while growin‘ up. Sam Stone, Lake Marie, Souvenirs. No words needed to what guys like him could do with such simple things. He said more in two words than other people say in a lifetime. Now he‘s gone. And I‘m sad as I feel like someone died I knew well. May you be in good company John where ever you might be. ❤️
Prayers for John🙏❤️
Excellent friend It's a cool video. I like it. Good luck, friends. See you later.
