Probably because it was part of the American-controlled sector immediately after WWII, and our military personnel had a lot of exposure to Bavarian culture. The Schlenkerla one was funny^^ For those that don't know: It's smoke beer. The malt is dried in a chimney by smoke, similar to Schwarzwälder Bacon. That's why it tastes like smoke dried meat and goes extremely well with hearty dishes of bread, pickles and bacon.

I've yet to taste a beer of a bigger German brand that actually tastes good. Krombacher, Veltins, Oettinger, Becks, Bitburger, Warsteiner, Radeberger.. all shite. Local and regional breweries are where it's at.

For those that don't know: It's smoke beer. The malt is dried in a chimney by smoke, similar to Schwarzwälder Bacon. That's why it tastes like smoke dried meat and goes extremely well with hearty dishes of bread, pickles and bacon.

I've yet to taste a beer of a bigger German brand that actually tastes good. Krombacher, Veltins, Oettinger, Becks, Bitburger, Warsteiner, Radeberger.. all shite. Local and regional breweries are where it's at.

Didn't see if anyone mentioned, so here we go. They seal the beer in the bottle flat with a little extra sugar to do a small fermentation to make it carbonated.
