      personally I don't think you need the jr pass for your itinerary. alternatively, you can consider:
      1) geting a physical IC card or a digital one on your phone: czcams.com/video/thWCRQiF8tQ/video.html
      you only need one IC card (any card is fine) for all of Japan. it's very convenient (and slightly cheaper) to have one. you can link shinkansen tickets to an IC card to travel ticketless in Japan.
      2) booking shinkansen from Tokyo to Kyoto/Shin-Osaka-Hiroshima station early to get a discount on SmarEX app: czcams.com/video/1HanXXUv6y8/video.html
      3) depending on your itinerary in Kyoto and Osaka, check out the Kansai Mini Pass: www.westjr.co.jp/global/en/ticket/pass/kansaimini/
      or the Kansai-HIroshima area pass: www.westjr.co.jp/global/en/ticket/pass/kansai_hiroshima/
      4) for Mt.Fuji or Kawaguchiko station (this is the station to go to if you want to have a view of Mt Fuji instead of climbing/hiking), just buy a normal train/bus ticket, it's around less than 5k JPY for a 2-way ticket: czcams.com/video/v9Ijo2YKmwk/video.html
      also, please check out these useful apps while traveling in Japan: czcams.com/video/VFl83UJH0gY/video.html

    What I currently recommend for passes is the Hokuriku Arch Pass if you want to keep doing the Golden Route. If you want an alternative to the 14 day, add the Kansai Wide pass on top of it. Want to go even further, despite the cost increase, the Kyushu Rail pass is still quite worth it

    I was in Japan last November 2022, going again at end of this October. I don't think It's going to make such a huge difference in my case. I used mainly Tokyo wide pass last time and just paid for my daily fares whenever needed. (In all the other cities and locations I went to). I checked all my receipts (yes......I'm one of 'those' people) when I came home and surprisingly there was about an AUD$80.00 higher difference compared to having bought passes. The only other factor was buying tickets at the machines in stations. I had no issue with that as I somtimes had pleasant social exchanges with locals in those situations, and I thought it was worth it for that experience.

    Thank you for always presenting these information clearly and smoothly. Would you know why they increased the prices by that much - were they losing money, or were there too many tourists taking advantage?

    • @TC-cd5sm
      @TC-cd5sm Před 9 měsíci +8

      There are several reasons why the raised the prices:
      - The price of the JR pass has stayed the same for quite some time. I remember going to Japan in 2015 and the price was the same then. However, because of the weak yen, JR decided to raise the prices to combat this. Also, inflation is not helping as well.
      - One of the biggest issues with the JR Pass being used today is crowding. Many tourists, when visiting Japan, often times just travel on the Golden Route via the Tokaido Shinkansen line: Tokyo to Osaka/Kyoto/Nara then back to Tokyo. They don't travel anywhere else within the country.
      And because the pass only allows access to the Hikari or Mizuho trains, many native Japanese travelers have complained about the lack of seats on those trains. They also don't want to pay for the fast Noizomi trains. With the new price increase, JR is looking to curb the high demand on the Tokaido line. The new JR Pass also allows the booking for the Noizomi train for an additional fee (I think $35 USD) on top of the JR Pass. Frankly, it's not worth $35 USD to save 10-20 mins in travel time.
      However, based on some of the surveys, it seems those same tourists are willing to pay for the price increase. We won't know for sure until the end of Dec 2023/January 2024 when all JR Passes under the old pricing will be entirely phased out as folks purchasing before Sept 30th have a full 90 days before exchange the order for the pass. If demand for the JR Pass falls off a cliff, JR can always revisit the issue and lower it.
      -Raising the price of the JR Pass encourages tourists to look for other options including Regional passes (they're raising those too but not as much). Also, raising the prices forces tourists to venture further out into the country to maximize the cost.
      For example with this sample Golden Route itinerary:
      Narita Express to Tokyo Station, Tokyo Station to Osaka, Osaka to Kyoto, Kyoto to Nara, Nara to Tokyo, Tokyo to Narita Express = around 30,400-35,400 yen
      With the new 7 day regular JR pass at 50,000 yen, you're still short 14,600 yen. In order to maximize the 50,000 yen, tourists need to travel even further (say, Hiroshima, Nagano, Fukuoka, Sendai, Aomori, or even as far as Sapporo). If you're just traveling the Golden Route, you're better off just buying individual tickets for each segment because it's cheaper.
      Tourists will need to carefully plan their travel with even more scrutiny to make sure they're not losing money. You're paying an even higher price for the 14 or 21 day pass. For those prices, you'd better be traveling throughout the entire country. For some destinations, you're better off taking a flight with a low costs carrier. It's faster and cheaper.
      Frankly, they should offer an option for JR Passes WITHOUT the Tokaido line instead of forcing all tourists to pay the price increase. Not everyone is traveling the Golden Route.
      Lastly, Japan is facing overtourism. As one of the last countries to remove COVID restrictions, the government did not anticipate such a resurgence of visitors. This is not the say the country is not welcoming of tourists, it's just that resources are being maxed out and increasing the prices for the JR Pass is one way to curb it. Hell, Kyoto got rid of the single day bus pass this month because it's local citizens were complaining about not being able to get a seat on the bus/the bus is always crowded with tourists/the lines are always long. You should see the sheer numerous of tourists waiting for buses at Kyoto Station! It's really affecting the local people, especially with the elderly.

      @@TC-cd5sm Thank you, this is very informative.

    • @cidiracing7481
      @cidiracing7481 Před 9 měsíci +2

      @TC-cd5sm Not sure why native travellers would skip the Nozomi. Looking at ticket prices online, it's only 500-600 yen more to take the Nozomi to Osaka than the Hikari. For JR Pass the extra payment for Nozomi is way out of proportion.
      I usually travel all of the place and even with travelling a lot the new JR Pass price is too high and cheaper to just buy tickets by itself or just fly. I fully understand an increase was needed as it was the same price for a very long time. The increase is however so large that I don't see how it can be affordable at any rate. My last trip was from Tokyo to Sapporo, and then from Tokyo to Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima, Onomichi, Fukuoka and Kumamoto and then back up again with more stops along they way in Hiroshima and Osaka beforing going back to Tokyo. That was done in 3 weeks with only 1 or 2 nights at most cities except for Sapporo for the snow festival. With the new price I would have payed 95 less for just getting every ticket separately. If even that much travel isn't enough to make the new price a good value proposition I don't know what will. Even if I would save only 50 bucks with the JR Pass I would be happy. Maybe once the MagLev starts it's worth it, but right now it's just cheaper to buy tickets normally.
      In my opinion it's just going to force more tourists to stay within Tokyo, Osaka snd Kyoto and discourage people to travel to more places that are not those 3 cities. People will just not buy the JR Pass. I always get the green car one because it's quieter and easier to get seats, and I have rarely seen tourists in the green cars. And the price difference wasn't that huge between ordinary and green car one before the increase. With ordinary pass now costing more than green pass previously I don't see a lot of people getting the Pass anymore.

    My wife and I bought our 14-days pass via the official JR website instead of from an online agent that we used often. While booking seats online was very convenient, a major problem I discovered was that once I ‘issued’ (or printed out) the physical train tickets, I could not modify the reservations, say to the next train, on my phone which was very frustrating.

Also, I see they are only allowing one reservation per group at the office. Do you know if this is only during peak customer hours or in general? @ONEGOODDREAM  Před 8 měsíci

      Hi, personally I don't think you need the jr pass for that itinerary. you can reserve a ticket on the SmartEX app (official shinkansen app of JR) to get discounts for early bookings: czcams.com/video/1HanXXUv6y8/video.html
      a Welcome Suica card or a digital Suica card on your phone can be useful for you, especially in Tokyo and Kyoto, since you can use it to pay for all the trains, subways, buses.

    Hi, you said after online railpass purchase, seat reservation can be made before going to Japan. This is in contrary to what JR Rail informed me and their website does not seem to have seat reservation screen available. Thanks.

      Hope you bought it from the official JR Pass site which allows you to reserve seats immediately which my wife and I have done twice this year already.

      Hi, I'm not sure where you got that info. here's the online purchase and seat reservation instruction from the official jr pass website: japanrailpass.net/en/use/reserved-seat-reservation/

    What pass should i get for a 5 days osaka trip?

    • @ONEGOODDREAM
      @ONEGOODDREAM  Před 8 měsíci

      you don't really need a pass. just get the Icoca or Suica card on your phone and pay as you go, fyi: czcams.com/video/VFl83UJH0gY/video.html
      it's also cheaper than buying the actual paper tickets.

    I am on a trip planning mode. We are 8pax group. 15 days With itineraries of 5 days Tokyo, 5 days , Osaka with day trips Nagoya,Nara and Kyoto. What alternate can you recommend? Is there any available All- day pass or something?
    Big Thank you for anyone who can help. We’ll be using wheelchair ♿️ too….
    Please know that I appreciate your video very much🙏🏻

      Hi, thank you so much for watching!🙏
      For Osaka, Kyoto, Nara you can consider the JR West pass/mini pass.
      For Tokyo, if you just stay in Tokyo, probably no need a pass. but if you go to Nikko/Kawaguchiko...from Tokyo, you can check out the Tokyo Wide Pass.
      For Shinkansen tickets Tokyo-Nagoya-Osaka/Kyoto, you can reserve online to get discounts for early bookings: czcams.com/video/1HanXXUv6y8/video.html
      They have seats for wheelchair on the bullet trains.
      When you use trains/subways, just talk to a station staff and he/she will assist you to get on/off the trains with wheelchair.
      hope this helps.

      @atomixfang Před 9 měsíci +1

      Nope you cant buy the ones without a name, But if you are going to osaka I think you can still get the ICOCA card. And it also works in most places.

      they first stopped selling the no-name suica and pasmo in June. then in Aug, they stopped selling the named suica & pasmo too. but there're some exceptions at some stations. that doesn't affect much cuz visitors can buy the welcome suica or pasmo passport, and residents should buy the monthly suica & pasmo cards anyway. plus there are digital suica & pasmo now.

      Hi, that you can't. but you can download the digital Suica card to your phone wallet and use it just like a normal card: czcams.com/video/gmU6uXOVtA0/video.html

    Do I need IC card to enter the Shinkansen gate?

    • @ONEGOODDREAM
      @ONEGOODDREAM  Před 8 měsíci +1

      it depends. if you link your shinkansen ticket to your ic card, you need to tap the ic card at the shinkansen gate. if you buy the shinkansen ticket separately and don't link it to the ic card, you just need to insert the shinkansen ticket at the shinkansen gate.

    Hi, can you explain this for me. I understand that the JR Japan Rail Pass (7 days) allow free travel on the Osaka Loop line, free Shin-Osaka - Osaka station but what about other JR Rail lines in Osaka. For examples, from Imamiya station to Jr-Namba station (JR line too), does the JR Pass cover this route or not, so confusing? Also, if I only use the Osaka JR Loop line stations (save money), does all the main attractions within walking distances from these 19 JR Loop stations? What other JR Lines in Osaka/Kyoto/Kobe/Nara/Nagoya (if any) we can travel for free? Any JR good links, easy to understand for first time travellers? Thanks

    • @ONEGOODDREAM
      @ONEGOODDREAM  Před 8 měsíci

      hi, simply put, all the local jr lines in all of those mentioned locations are covered by the jr pass. but if you just plan to do Osaka/Kyoto/Kobe/Nara/Nagoya, you may not need the jr pass.

    Hi, we are a family of 4 and we will be in Japan hopefully in late January it will be our first time in Japan. We planned our itinerary as Tokyo- Osaka- Kobe - Nara - Kyoto. Do you think will it be beneficial for us to buy Jr Pass ? And my second question is can we use jr pass in Kyoto, Nara. Are the main attractions can be seen by using jr pass ? Thank you

    • @ONEGOODDREAM
      @ONEGOODDREAM  Před 7 měsíci

      hi, with your itinerary, maybe it's cheaper without the jr pass. instead, check out the Kansai Wide Area Pass or the Kansai Mini pass since they both cover Osaka, Kyoto, Nara and Kobe. might be a good option for your family. check out all the Kansai passes on the official website here: www.westjr.co.jp/global/en/ticket/
      (all passes do not include attractions).
      if you buy the bullet trains from Tokyo-Osaka-Tokyo, you can buy online on the SmartEX app early to get some discounts. here's how: czcams.com/video/1HanXXUv6y8/video.html
      hope this helps..
