      Exactly. Or at least get rid of the damn electronics. WTF sparring at least had power and precision back in the 70s through the early 2000s. Until the electronic sparring gear was introduced which ruined everything.

    Look, I get why most people would think that Taekwondo would be impractical at self-defense, but most of the fancy kicks are just for show and because of how rules in matches work. But if you know how to throw basic kicks, punches, and/or throw, and most importantly, run from such a situation (you don't need to prove anything just be safe), you're gonna be fine.

    • @WOLFAKKO2
      @WOLFAKKO2 Před 2 lety +22

      The best self defense is avoid the fight. No discussion. Matogi is a point's combat, with rules, respect and a lot of pain and humble. But if self defense is for save a life, eyes and groins are so soft and sensitive that they should not be forgotten.

    ITF founder Choi Hong Hee was the original creator of TKD. He had some disagreements with the other founders of TKD in the 70's and ultimately created ITF after leaving Korea. North Korean influence over ITF coupled with some other factors caused the larger WTF to portray Choi as an unimportant or dishonorable figure in TKD history. In my opinion, ITF TKD is better than mainstream WTF, with less nationalism and more realism.

      Nothing to do with North Korean influence. Gen. Choi was a member of the South Korean army and tkd was introduced as its form of unarmed combat. Later after leaving the army Gen. Choi introduced itf style to North Korea and was regarded as a traitor by the government of Seoul. They pulled all support for ITF and the kukkiwon was raised in its place but ITF became supported by the Pyongyang government and is now associated with the north but it's roots are from the south. Ironically the north kept the Japanese style uniforms of ITF.

      Fractal Image they fight more like long guard in Muay Thai, and adjust hands based on distance, what’s longer your leg or your foot? Keeping his hand in the middle instead of all the way down or all the way up helps when you don’t only have to parry and counter punches but also parry and counter kicks, this isn’t boxing. Have you ever seen a Thai stance? Everyone has their own preference, I’m totally against fighting sideways and both hands down, like the WTF but those guys don’t even punch to the head. So you’re kind of missing the big picture here

I also remember I had this whole argument with 2 other Tae Kwon Do students at a public park over which kick was right for one of the patterns. Mayweather wins every fight. Fighting is about hitting without getting hit. That's true in the ring and on the street. Why fight dumb when you can be smart?

      @@DavidBarnwell876tkdja Fight smart in both, but in the street the rules completely change, and the over all best way to fight is to just flat out overpower your opponent which is why BJJ is so effective in MMA. If you are the better Boxer, Knock him out quickly, if you are a big bulk wrestler, Grab that fucker and make him submit.
      So no hit and run tactics dont exist in an actual brutal brawl.

      What you see in the graph down there, is how many umpires are giving you the win. As ITF Taekwon-do scoring system relies exclusively on what the 4 corner judges see, the graph is changing constantly during a fight. Punches to the torso or the head are worth 1 point, kicks to the torso are worth 2 and to the head recieves 3 points. The hit must have a certain power for the judge to consider it as a point, and as it relies exclusively on the umpire's eyes and angle he/she is sit on, he/she may or may not see the same than the other 3 judges. The fight is won if you have more judges in your favor. However, you must have at least the vote of two of the judges, as if it finish 1-0, you must go through a 3rd round to tiebreak, just the same in case it finishes 1-1 or 2-2 (It means that 3 of the 4 judges consider it is a tied combat).

      No, it's a combat oriented sport. It was originally a combat art but that is not the focus now though different clubs likely have their own focuses. I know some clubs do spend a lot of time doing self defence including against knives and bats/sticks but I know a lot of others that barely touch it and the grading level self defence is minimal at best and not a very important part of the grading which seems dominated by patterns, sparring and breaking.
