- New trains are now in service on Greater Anglia with the Class 755 'FLIRT' train. Built by Stadler, FLIRT which stands for Fast Light & Intercity Regional Train are now being introduced in the Norwich area.
I went and caught one on a trip out to Great Yarmouth to take a comprehensive look at them. They're also running to Lowestoft and Cambridge as well.

The elbow support section was something that all train reviews should include! It’s by far the most important piece of ergonomics in any public transport
@@solarsatan9000 The chair war, elbow support, lighting. Its all ergonomics and its all very important to consider when designing a train. Abellio and Stadler have nailed all of those with the 755s, the last train I can say does anything near similar was the Class 375, which I ride regularly and enjoy very much.
I wish more public transport interior designers and engineers factored elbow support! It is appalling where I live
The support for the elbow is even PURPOSE. They so only need 2 arm shelfs for each pair of seats, instead of three ;)

Surely it is about time that you are given a golden ticket. What you do for the train deserves a decent reward.
So, if my ticket (as was with this video) has been paid for I always make an effort to mention it. Same with the Azuma video - LNER covered that and i said so. But with almost all my other trips (Least used Stations etc...) i pay for my own tickets, and I pay for all my TfL/Tube travel too - but with a Gold Card 1/3 off-peak discount.

Higher seating due to it being a mainly low floor train, and that area is above the bogies.

It would also make it easier for those with limited mobility (but not wheelchair users) to sit on, and leave. It is very often easier to get up from a seat and move to the floor when having to descend just a little amount, rather than having to exit by using muscles to stand up!

Hi Geoff. I managed to take a ride on a 755 a couple of weeks ago, between Lowestoft and Norwich. I was impressed with the seating, and the quietness of the engine. That line must be a record for me, in having done it in the most types of stock. I've done it in the old Class 101's, Sprinters 150's , 153's , 156's, 158's, 170's, an HST (!!), the preserved Hastings Diesel Unit, and now a Stadler FLIRT 755!!
In particular, I shall be glad to see the 153's disappear from the area, not only because of the potential overcrowding at busy times, but the lack of legroom in the Anglia based examples. The FLIRTs are a great improvement!

Replacing one and two carriage trains with three and four carriage trains with decent seats. Take note other train operators, this is how it's done!

I totally agree. The 195s should have been 3 and 4 car set, not 2 and 3. I've seen 3 car 195s from Manchester Airport to Windermere packed solid when they've stopped at Preston. Completely inadequate. A lot of Northern's additional trains, 195s and 331s, aren't additional stock at all. They are just replacements for withdrawn or cascaded rolling stock.
A 745/755 carriage is 20% shorter .
A 3 car 195 is almost the same lenght as a 4 car 745/755 whitout power car
That Also explanes the 1 door per carriage in the 745/755 sets.
True, it's the same with the yet to be delivered class 777s. 4 coaches instead of 3, but overall the train is only about 1 mtr longer as the 777 coaches are shorter. No doubt because of their articulated design.
As for the Anglia services. A 4 car with shorter carriages is miles better than a single or twin 153 service.
In Finland it’s even worse. On some services from Tampere to Helsinki, which is about equivalent to Birmingham to London, a bit longer, they run 2 car Sm4 trains. Not even 4. 2! 2 CAR TRAINS ON A CROWDED, LONG SERVICE. Also, just about all of the Helsinki to Lahti (equivalent to London-Coventry), are 2 car Sm4s as well.
I've heard they are meant to be being doubled up to make four and six car trains eventually.
So nice to hear my "home" station of Acle being announced. I also remember the through London services to Yarmouth - 10 or more carriages (sidings are still there in Yarmouth for spare sets but VERY overgrown) with a 37 or 47 at the front. Reversing at Norwich to carry on through. Love seeing the 37s with a short set but I look forward to trying the FLIRTs next time I leave the car at home and visit my folks by train on the Wherry Line.
The sidings at GY, as you may know, are very much back in use !

I had the pleasure of riding on a 755 today. While I will miss the noise of the Sprinters and 170s (plus while I've never ridden with one on the mainline, anything hauled by 37s sounds like a great time), I hope everyone recognises just how AMAZING these new units are?! So refined, so quiet, so spacious, so PERFECT in every way. It didn't even feel like a DMU, it felt like being on loco-hauled stock without the sluggishness. Stadler absolutely rules.
Another great video. Looking forward to my next trip to Norfolk to see the old man and have a day on the (new) trains! Nice drone shot of the Reedham swing bridge too!

At 0:25 in, if you pause the video there is a dead bird of prey (Kestrel?) that had been caught in the front of the train and was very much dead. :( It got removed later in the day ...
Oh, and 755's for the new London - Lowestoft obvs, because the track is non-electrified innit? 745's are electric only.

It looks like the principal mechanical difference between the 745 and 755 is the inclusion of a prime-mover car on the 755. It wouldn't surprise me if they engineered the passenger cars basically the same on both classes, such that it would be relatively easy to change a 745 into a 755 and vice-versa. For one, separate the train at the appropriate points, insert the prime-mover car, make the electrical connections. For the other, remove or disable the prime-mover car, add overhead connections and the necessary cables and other systems down to the electric drive controllers.

I doubt you would have crawled on the carpet under the seats if the unit hadn't been virtually brand new. Imagine what sorts of nastiness can and will be deposited on those floors in the weeks and months ahead?
Great review. I'm so pleased you like the build quality. As an ex Epsom dweller, I got experience both Southern and SWT/R services. The Siemens trains, although not perfect, far out shone the Bombardier stock. As were SWRs 455s, far better than Southern's refurbished stock.
I now live in Southport, we will be getting some new Stadler class 777s here. After your review, I'm really looking forward to them arriving.
As for the seats and general comfort. You are so right. I recently went from Paddington to Plymouth 1st class (I had a 7 day all lines rover) on a class 802. Underwhelming to say the least. Packed, faulty aircon, uncomfortable seat. I had a better journey on a 144 Pacer to Barnstaple and my local 142s to Wigan.
The power cubicle you mentioned is actually a completely separate vehicle in the formation. It's a flexible format where by the engines can be replaced by other power sources such as batteries or hydrogen fuel cells etc, or the vehicle removed altogether should they be purely electric operation in the future.
The engine placement is genius, especially for the rollout of different fuels like hydrogen and future electrification as you mentioned.
It's called modular building of trains.
Make all carriages the same in any given train, shove in a power supply unit, battery, diesel, electric, combined, ready.
Or later change the PSU.

I’ve been on these 755s on the GY to Norwich and Norwich to Cambridge lines and they’re genuinely a pleasure to be on!
These look like very well thought out comfortable trains. Hope they prove a very big and popular upgrade. Well done GA!!
We've got two versions of the FLIRTs here in Norway too. They started to introduce them approx 7 years ago, and they're plentifull on the system now. Most are to be found on local services (class 75), allthough some class 74 sets have been bought for use on regional routes as well. FLIRTs are also used on the intercity route between Stockholm and Gothenburg in Sweden, and on the Helsinki commuter rail network in Finland.
Actually I gotta ask, how are the Flirts? We're looking for new trains in Denmark for the state railways and I want to hear if Stadler is a good choice. I mean they're certainly a favorite with open access operators like MTR Express in Sweden, I can say that
@@drdewott9154 I haven't been on one yet myself, but I've not heard or read anything negative about them. The swiss are very good at making both locomotives and rolling stock in general, and Stadler seem to be no exeption, as far as I can acertain. By the way, FLIRT based trains can be found on the networks of several other European countries too, other than the ones I mentioned. There is also a double-decker version, I believe, that is marketed under a different name, but based on the same arcitectural platform, so to speak.
Direct London to Yarmouth is a things just within my memory. When I was a nipper my mother played in an east of England hockey tournament located over a long weekend in Yarmouth because along with the hotels the transport to get there in good order was in place.

the way the seats are side mounted makes me wonder about the amount of torque that's applied when a particularly sizable gentleman sits on the seat furthest from the wall
@@Mirciulikkk there are 2 struts in a V and they are massive. Ridiculously so. There is a similar strut arrangement on IETs, but those are little spindly ones.
The one niggle I have with the flirts is the massive seat struts and ventilation duct along the bottom of the wall result in restricted leg room.
The raised section of the floor is to go over the bogies. The rest of the floor is lower than other trains in order to provide level boarding (i.e. no step up required from the platform).
Looks like they've done a really great job with them. Never thought i'd say this, but well done Greater Anglia!

First time I went to Great Yarmouth many years ago it was top and tailed by 2 47's and Mk2's between. He hit the stops at about 3 mph. Great start to a holiday !!

Good to see that you've come this way again. BTW, Norwich Station was called Norwich Thorpe until fairly recently, a legacy of the era when Norwich had three stations - Thorpe, the terminus for most trains on the former Great Eastern lines, City, which was the terminus of the Midland & Great Northern Joint (M&GN) and Victoria(!) which was the original GER station but which closed to passengers, becoming freight-only, around WWI.
I love these videos where you talk about new trains. Makes me feel like our railway system is still relevant. (Just a shame to loose the pacers) 😝
The first train in the UK that is fit for purpose and of the same quality as the rest of Europe.
I wouldn’t be so quick to say that. A couple days back I did a journey from Lindau - Friedrichshafen (in Germany) and the train was horrid. Diesel, not cleaned, Floor vibrated so badly that I had to lift my feet from it, absolutely packed and wasn’t even rush hour (the train only had 2 carriages), and the journey was highly overpriced.
@@TA-yt1qy They are building catenary between Lindau and Friedrichshafen in a few months. Right now they are using old diesel railcars from different places from Germany because it makes no sens to buy new ones if you have to replace them in not even a year. I saw some from Sylt and Dortmund.
@aljanat5 The electrification between Friedrichshafen and Lindau is part of the electrification between Ulm and Lindau. With this upgrade the trains from Stuttgart to Lindau don't have to change the locomotives from an electric locomotive to a diesel locomotive everytime in Ulm.
With the new catenary and other upgrades to the route the time of the journey will be decreased. They also plan to increase the number of freight trains using this route (I think the are only 2 freighttrains a day nowadays) .
They actually planned to start building the catenary way earlier. That's the reason why the trains are way too old and often crowded.

I think the regional train services in Germany are better in general because they are highly subbsidised from the state. The state (like Bavaria) can also prescribe to the train company how mutch capacity the train has or that it must be wheelchair accessible.
But there are also big issues on some routes in
Germany like the Marschbahn.
Where does this rose tinted view of European railways come from? away from Frances, germanys, spains premier route/s the railways are worse than this country and Italy, Portugal and the rest of european countries again falls below the comfort standard of this country, The problem with this country is the new found popularity of rail and the reduction of stock on the network. If we start getting more stock so people get the seat they pay for this country would be fine, and with longer trains we would need less trains and so a failure would not cause all day issues with lateness.
That one door not in the middle is triggering my OCD.
The funny thing is, the bigger Stadler trains (KISS) have the doors in an unusual configuration, too, but there they are ocd compliant: Two doors per carriage. Not at the ends, but spaced such that all neighbouring doors have equal distance to each other.
I found that my OCD receded when I looked at the train as a single unit, made up of four components (see around 11:28). The door arrangement when viewing the train as a whole...works. For me, anyway.

Yes by the car, but the units are symmetrical end to end (180 rotational symetery in plan) (well except for the toilets in car C ... and the BMU3s that just drop car B).
Amtrak's Amfleet II cars only have one door, at one end of the car. It's expected that the non-door end would be coupled to the door end of another Amfleet II, or to a different kind of car that has a door at each end.

Me and my partner were doing a tour of norfolk and Suffolk at the end of July and we completed the journey from Norwich to Great Yarmouth on the very first run of the 755 4 coach train, very comfy and very stylish!

And the reason there are odd heights aboard are because the floors are lower, and the raised sections are above the bogies.
Lower floors means easier to get level boarding (with the noted extension ramp :-))) )
Being a regular user of some of the Dutch Stadler GTW and FLIRT units, I can definitely say these are a great choice of rolling stock. The GTWs have the separate engine car which is really fantastic for noise, and the FLIRTs are quick, comfortable, and from what I've seen, quite reliable.

And here in Germany(also in the Netherlands, Switzerland and Austria) there are Trains from Stadler(Called GTW) with the Engine Unit in a extra Carriage.
if you look closely during 5:05 and 10:42 those trains actually have this GTW layout. Same with the new TEX Rail trains in Texas. The new ones just also get the FLIRT Name instead. But in Texas there are signs telling its actually forbidden (im not sure but i think its even controlled by Cameras) to walk through the Engine Unit, even though you technichally could, and its not dangerous at all. Typical US Thing i guess. Maybe they dont want anyone to mess with the Engine or something

I was going to say: looking at this train, I thought "finally, we're catching up with Switzerland somewhat". SBB/CFF/FFS, even if not perfect, does know how to run trains, and the Swiss, like their German counterparts, do know engineering.
@@nobbynobbynoob I dare say Stadler are ahead of Siemens and Bombardier in terms of quality. The new Bombardier Dosto SBB received have been super delayed and unreliable. Contrast that that to the Stadler-built Giruno.
It's hideous, and from what I've heard, it breaks down a lot. So much for vaunted Swiss engineering.
Having the engines in 1 compartment will probably help with maintenance as well as give a quieter ride.

4 engines each facing outwards for easy maintenance and removal. The pod can be removed alltogether aswell for fully electric operation.

A Flirt consisting of two driving cars sandwiching a power pack.
When electrification comes, an intermediate pantograph car can be added.
No need to wait for new designs!
I also want existing trains (especially the Aventra, Desiro City and Azuma) fitted with similar level boarding intermediate vehicles.
The level boarding will produce enormous societal benefits (anyone with wheelchairs or heavy luggage will be able to travel and hoc), well worth any extra cost of building.
No intermediate pantograph car needed.. these have the pantograph's built in already.

There are also battery FLIRTs, which come in a two-car version without a power pack as well.
I'm curious if there's enough volume in the prime-mover car to hold batteries and/or capacitors to allow for operation on short stretches of non-electrified rail without diesel motors, and how much of the rail would need to be electrified to support that.
A two-car unit would only need two diesel engines, leaving two diesel engine-sized spaces for batteries or other means of power storage.
So lovely to see decent seats in a new train. I liked the carefully phrased description of them. Yes they do look much better than First Class in certain Government specified trains. I might even move to East Anglia.

When I'm in Germany, ODEG operates some other somewhat similarly designed Stadler trains with the engine in the middle (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ostdeutsche_Eisenbahn#/media/File:OE51_Bahnhof_Fohrde.jpg) and they're also super nice and quiet.
The seats near the gangways are higher because the train has Jakobsons bogies so two cars share one bogie and thus the reason why they are higher
The reason the seats near the end are higher is that the other seats (and the floor level as a whole) are considerably lower than on other trains.

You're slightly wrong with the Lowestoft to Liverpool Street diagrams being 745's.
They have to be 755's as the line isn't electrified.
Just build up enough speed and coast through the non-electrified sections!

This video is way better than I expected, what a way to spend a hangover on CZcams. Fun fact, here in Estonia, I think I'm right in saying, we were the only country in the world to replace 100% of our trains back in like 2012 or something to FLIRTs. In our older models, there is more space for the elbow, obviously USB charging wasn't a thing back then but we do have plenty of regular sockets, but it seems our seats look a bit more comfortable and also have hand rests. Did I not see the doors separating the engine compartment, or there weren't any?
I love these trains, so fast and comfortable while travelling from London Liverpool Street to Bishop’s Stortford.

Nearly all European railway companies test their trains and locomitives there, like nearly all climate testing is done in Wien.

Rode the 90+82 from Liverpool Street to Norwich once last year. Quiet, yes. Comfy, NO. With the loco pushing it lurches and judders every time it set off from a station, as if the brakes were not releasing. You get the same on Chiltern on a 68+82 when heading towards Marylebone. Unfortunately.
Mark 3s? Quiet? From engine noise, sure, but SQUEAK SQUEAK from the gangways.
