i spent a late night in a hotel in newery at the bar with christy he marked my life what a man , a legand , a gentelman , a scolar and most of all a teacher , back in 86
This song is just exeptional....i cannot believe iv never heard it before now. I lost my precious child only 16yrs old & iv listened to many songs about loss & death but this songs description of deep loss is just beautiful. Makes me look at my beautiful sons passing in a totally new way. Im glad iv only discovered it now as i wouldn't have understood the beauty in the words. Thank you so much for this 💙❤
Listening to this tonight in amazement in southern Illinois. I’ve long loved Mary Black’s version and still do, but this one put me to tears of joy. It is a meditation that transcends the noise and clamor of the world and takes me to a holy place. Thank you, gentlemen. I’ll treasure this always.
I love this song. I first heard Christy Moore singing it. I love his singing and I've heard others sing the song. All of them are good but this version is special.
Even I don't know which rock I have been liviing under. I am obsessed with Ireland's music and yet, I have never heard of Jimmy MacCarthy. I love to listen to Christie which is what led me here. Unbelievable..........
I read a quote by Christy saying every time he sings this song it's a spiritual experience. I know what he means, I get the same just listening to it. My late father loved to sing it with his guitar. Always brings a tear to my eye. A masterpiece from Jimmy Mac.
Brilliant line - incidentally Jimmy openly admitted that he made it up to fit with the feel of the song !!! No such thing as an 'Alchemists Stone' !!! :)
I have been listening 2 Christy 4 years my da adores him we have seen him in Glasgow a few times but only heard of this song recently, wonderful piece of music and vocals
outstanding piece. sung beautifully by jimmy and christy. My father has been a christy moore fan for many years. After I came across this song I showed him.He now asks for it to be played every single time he's in my home.
beautiful, one of my favourite songs. its rare ya hear the writer of a song, sing with the performer. stunning. and declan playing support on the guitar, such talent in one room at one time
This is a special song. I've been listening to it for about 2 years now. I found Christy about 4 years. This song is beautiful and has a spiritual feeling. But it's not one size fits all! That's why some don't like it.
Jimmy MacCarthy lived in North Kilkenny for a spell, drawing inspiration from his beautiful surroundings in Jenkinstown . I knew a few Cork men who settled in Kilkenny and felt at home, the shared passion for music and hurling and the ability to not take life too seriously. I likewise a Kilkenny man was made welcome in Cork by the Spillanes of Carraig na Bhfear, and sessions in the Teach Bheag in Oliver Plunket Street. This song I think is an ethereal meditation on the nothingness of existence. But perhaps its best not to analyze- just enjoy it. Thanks Jimmy.
Takes me to church this❣ Your story is way better than mine. I know I would have drowned in Crumlin pool, only my kid uncle was there that 1 day to pull me out🙄: It's only neglect if your da is not in the sauna havn the chat with Christy😅
Lyrics I skimmed across black water, without once submerging Onto the banks of an urban morning That hungers the first light, much much more Than mountains ever do. And she like a ghost beside me goes down with the ease of a dolphin And emerges unlearned, unscathed, unharmed. For she is the perfect creature, natural in every feature And I am the geek with the alchemists stone. For all of you who must discover, for all who seek to understand For having left the path of others, you find a very special hand And it is a holy thing, and it is a precious time And it is the only way Forget-me-nots among the snow, it's always been and so it goes To ponder his death and his life eternally For all of you who must discover, for all who seek to understand For having left the path of others, you find a very special hand And it is a holy thing, and it is a precious time And it is the only way Forget-me-nots among the snow, it's always been and so it goes To ponder his death and his life eternally One bright blue rose outlives all those Two thousand years and still it goes To ponder his death and his life eternally
Its "alchemists clothes" not stone. And forget me nots are a flower. If you're stressed listen to this a few times. Stress relieved. I've listened to it over a thousand times and it's just pure genius
What a tremendous amount of pure artistry in one room! Declan Sinnott's slide guitar is so effective with this beautiful piece written by Jimmy MacCarthy, who harmonizes so beautifully with the awesome Christy Moore. I'm afraid I'm the geek who doesn't understand all the lyrics in this song, but the words are still inspirational. Could someone please tell me if the tuning on the slide guitar is EADGBE or is it something different. Thanks.
This is a song about the Virgin Mary, I think. Bright blue rose...her traditional color is blue, and roses are deeply associated with her as well. I think there are allusions to praying the Rosary as well, as this is the prime way we "ponder his death and his life eternally."
This is still one of the most beautiful and moving songs ever. This version by Jimmy and Christy is just perfect.Declan's guitar is sublime.
Beautifully written words, i have a different comprehension of loss from just this one song. Stunning 🙏
1995 Glastonbury,Christy and Jimmy played a morning bonus session in a tent,no stage,we were all sat down, incredible…….RIP Fergus
i spent a late night in a hotel in newery at the bar with christy he marked my life what a man , a legand , a gentelman , a scolar and most of all a teacher , back in 86

This Holy thing and special hand is the Lord. Its Jesus. To ponder His death and His death eternally . 2000 years and still it goes ! LOVE you Jesus.
We are so lucky to have found this song and these magnificent artists

Greetings from Ireland, couldn't have said it any better
I love this song. I first heard Christy Moore singing it. I love his singing and I've heard others sing the song. All of them are good but this version is special.
It's from a DVD called Christy Moore Uncovered. There are copies in circulation. Worth picking up.

Even I don't know which rock I have been liviing under. I am obsessed with Ireland's music and yet, I have never heard of Jimmy MacCarthy. I love to listen to Christie which is what led me here. Unbelievable..........

Jimmy and Christy. I’m in heaven.

Thanks to Jimmy for bringing this song into the World - and for being there with Christy and Declan, to bring it to life in this way.

What a treasure Jimmy McCarthy is
A Ridiculously beautiful piece of music performed by some of the most amazing musicians. Thankyou very much for posting this
I feel it does no sleight to these fine gentlemen to say so, but the barman sings it even better.
A perfect combination of three instruments and three voices. A Swiss chronometer - with feeling - could not do better.
A special song..treated with respect by special singers...
Compliments to Jimmy;Christy & Declan on a class performance. FrankD.
"...the geek with the alchemist's stone" such humility.
I love that phrase brilliant
Brilliant line - incidentally Jimmy openly admitted that he made it up to fit with the feel of the song !!! No such thing as an 'Alchemists Stone' !!! :)
Just my take but I like to think his “alchemist’s stone” is his ability to play beautiful music to her
I played this video many many times. Every time I'm touched, love it. The slide guitar is beautiful, wish I could play like this...
And me as well..

I can't parse it, but it seems to me that it involves the Blessed Mother leading folks to salvation. Who knows? I just like it.
This is a special song. I've been listening to it for about 2 years now. I found Christy about 4 years. This song is beautiful and has a spiritual feeling. But it's not one size fits all! That's why some don't like it.
