This is so well written. You can understand Mikasa's POV and you can understand Bertholdt's POV. Being able to understand both sides, knowing that there is not just a fight of good vs. evil, that everyone has their reasons and their flaws ... it creates so much conflict. Genius.

@@yasinzeydulusoy Everyone likes to say that Eren, Reiner and Bertholdt have a choice, yes, They did, but they didn’t at the same time. Eren, Reiner and Bert are fighting for those who they care for, They have realized that the people who they thought were villains/devils aren’t real, They are all the same. But they push forward, not because they are free, but because they have to protect their loved ones.
The only difference while Eren managed to protect his friends and loved ones, Reiner and Bert could not.
The part where ymir was shown in her titan body... She understood what bertholdt was referring to and didn't want anyone else (as in case she was fake crowned as ruler and couldn't protect anyone) to be persecuted or punished by marleyans... This is the great art of story telling 👏
Kinda fked up how she CHOSE to go with them and help and then they up and let her get eaten by the new jaw titan.

I think the dying off screen makes us relate to Historia and everyone else's perspective - we don't see it, neither do they, we just find out at the same time. It's tragic that we don't get to see her again, just like everyone else

Therefore, majority of the guards who sent her to Paradise, already quite aged at the time, must have died. Plus, I don’t think Marleyans would make an official announcement of who precisely was the shifter of the jaw titan at the time, just that they got it back (after all, some informations must be classified as private to the public).

One proof is when Porco was talking with Reiner of when he took the jaw titan back. When talking about Ymir, he said that it must have been hard to live by this name, as she’s named after the first founding titan. He didn’t knew who she was, and maybe learned later on her life story.
However, there might have been some former or veteran marleyans soldiers who, if still alive by chance, might have recognized her. Who knows.

Bertholdt wanted someone to understand him and Reiner, well Eren is the one that actually understood them in the end.

It seems like Eren became a psycho, colder than Bert and Reiner when they broke into the walls. Him understanding the burden Reiner carries is interesting, and, I don't know why, but I do believe Reiner will switch sides and somehow help the wall eldians (or that's just because I really like Reiner and wish he could "repair" the shit he has done)
Eren is mainly influenced by the memories from Attack Titan and maybe the Founding aswell considering he's in contact with Historia often. But his mindset wasn't like this when he first came across the sea to the liberio, he wanted to kill everyone. Now after spending some time and observing all of them, he understands them much better.
The difference between him and Reiner is that Reiner attacked and killed people before understanding them and Eren got to understand them so he won't have mixed feelings.
Reiner was badly brainwashed, Eren wasn't. I don't know, I had the feeling that Reiner may become a very complex anti-hero and Eren turn somewhat cruel, especially after the marleyan arc, which portrayed Eren as almost a titan shifter version of Tywin Lannister...

Bertholt is such an underrated character. I think the author killed him too soon. He has a lot of potentials and he deserves better than being eaten by Armin :/

am I the only one who finds this just about heartbreaking? two of their most trusted friends deceived them all. their is no telling g how much this affected Bert and Reiner. I think its a little clear that Bert is took a massive emotional hit. so so sad.
Ikr especially as the previous episodes focused on Reiners emotional breakdown and then it comes out that Bertholdt the silent guy in the background had more feelings about this than anyone else.

Bertolt Hoover is the most misunderstood and underappreciated character. Especially by anime watchers. Manga readers know about his past, so its somewhat better in their case. But he deserves so much more love. And I can never really get over his death, he deserved better. Honestly my favorite character

Both Reiner and Betholt are in difficult position. First of all, they were just kids when they destroyed Wall Maria, they barely know anything about the Eldians in Paradis prior to the event. I think they saw hope and future to them just like Ymir but they have family to go home to and they can't leave them just like that.

Gold Silver That’s true but the reason why Marley wanted all the rest of the titan powers from Eldia was so that they would still be able to compete with the technology advancements. Meaning at the current state, titans are still quite viable. Especially against Marley for that matter. I don’t know, I just think that if they sided with Eren, it would’ve definitely been possible to take out Marley in a revolution, and fairly easily. They wouldn’t know what to do with that many titans rampaging.

Yeeesh I used to think the Colossal Titan was like the mastermind/final villain of show and the leader of the Titans. Who would have guessed that he was just another child soldier controlled and forced into doing things he didn't even want to do? He's just another victim.
I would’ve never guessed the direction Attack on Titan has went when this show first aired. I thought this show was just an overhyped show and then season 2 got me hooked after the long wait.

To be honest, I believe that the only thing making them hold on to their mission was of course, their families, but also the death of Marcel. They didn't want his death to go to waste which made them even more stuck than before. They didn't want to kill people, but they had orders, and they also had the death of their friend looming over them. Really a fucked up situation for them. I really don't know who's right and wrong in this show anymore, which is master story-telling on Isayama's part.

You know what? I read the manga, I feel bad for Reiner and Bertolt. Like really.
But I'm just a spectator of of some fictional world, I'm a not a victim of their actions and all the woes they caused.
But Mikasa is in her right to be so cold toward Berthold. She already lost her family in atrocious circumstance at the age of nine, when she found a second family and a new home, she found warm in a world that was cold after the death of her dad and mom.
But only one year later, Bertholt caused the destruction of her newly found happiness, she lost her second home (Carla got eaten and Grisha disappeared). Eren is her last family and source of warm she has, and Reiner & Bertolt are now taking him away from her despite already causing enough pain to her 5 years ago.
And then you guys are calling her bitch because she is being harsh to a mass murder (Before a fanboy jumps on me, Bertolt is responsible for the death of countless innocent people, nothing will change this fact. I don't hate him for this because I know why he did this but it doesn't suddenly erase all the pain he caused to those who lost everything that day) who also kidnapped her last family and refuse to give him back? She isn't jesus, Bertholt feeling guilty and crying don't suddenly atone for his actions, especially when he refuses to explain shit except "someone has to do it" which still ain't explaining shit.
Mikasa isn't even my favorite character, I actually prefer the warriors and I think Reiner is the best written in the manga.
But I'm not moron, it's not because I'm sad for them I will suddenly overlook their crimes and act like Mikasa is the worst person in existence for her 100% justified anger.

I'd understand if she was cold in only that moment. But that's all she is, all the time. She's still black and white, even though there has been many moments where she could've had development. Tha't whole idea of being obsessed with Eren has just become too tiring (At least for me), heck she was the same even when she had a new family. Back then as well, she was unemotional and cold, and constantly obsessing over Eren. It's simply become a joke that ran for too long.
And don't get me wrong, I want her to be an actual character. I was under the impression that she had done all that working out to further be able to protect not just Eren but everyone around her and that was admirable, but NO! She's a sub-product of titan experimenting. Of course. She was already a titan killing machine 0_0.
The reason trying to be more understanding with the Warriors is that they actually seem human and not emotionless aliens. You can easily call many people from the past mass murdering sicko's but most of the time (especially in WWI and WWII), they were soldiers under strict orders and didn't have really the freedom to do otherwise, That's what makes them human, and that's what makes Berhtoldt and Reiner interesting characters, that moral dilemma of knowing what you're doing is wrong but you're under orders to do so. Like Bertholdt was saying earlier, as Soldiers, it was a part of their mission to do so, but that doesn't mean they wanted to do it.
And being brought to a moment were you're literally talking with what you consider friends as well as the enemy can bring people to tears easily, were all human after all and that's why we sympathise with the Warriors. They are willing to accept punishment for what they have done, they show regret, they're not shying away from showing how they truly feel about what they have done.
Not hating Mikasa her ma'am but she has changed at all since the beginning. She still willing to do pretty much anything if Eren's life is on the line and that's fine, but I just wish she wasn't always so cold and emotionless. (Other than for few bursts of anger here and there)
rockfred2 Hey that's a opinion I can agree with myself am dissatisfied by her lack of character devlopment. My problem isn't the criticism against Mikasa, I'm just against the whole bitch calling and passing her as a villain in this scene. I'm someone with a strong empathy, so while I feel deeply for Bertolt, I don't think her reaction make her inhuman when I put myself in her shoes.
Though Eren isn't the only person she cares about and she isn't that emotionless, but I rather avoid spoiling the manga.
But yeah, I would welcome a real development. I did hear the author plan for Mikasa and Eren separate for some time, this is already a good new.

And your right, she shouldn't be cast as a bitch in the scene, just as human as any other of the cast, it's how she's learnt to deal with situations like that, focusing on saving people she wants to protect.

Honestly bertholt has to have gotten the most shitty luck out of all the titan shifters.
His titan's one job it to destroy. Even shifting into it causes destruction. Bertholt isnt even slightly agressive: his whole ability goes against his personality.
Imagine his situation for a moment:
Hes basically a walking atomic bomb. He's been forced to go into enemy territory and use said bomb at his own expense. He's been told that the people he is killing deserve to die, that what he is doing is noble. But then he finds out all of it is untrue. These people he has been murdering are just like him. But hes between a rock and a hard place: he cant simply disobey the people who sent him to the island: who knows what could happen to his loved ones?
And not only that, what would happen to him if he just said "hey reiner, stop running. Here, take eren back, im on your side now". It wouldnt be that simple. He's a mass murderer in the eyes of quite litterally everyone within the walls, and would either end up executed or eaten.
He only has 2 choices: go back and risk slight punishment for failing the mission, abandoning and betraying his friends and possibly getting one of them (eren) killed; or, stay and deal with the fact that his betrayal of his superiors will probably end up in the death of his loved ones and them trying to hunt him down, but only if he isnt executed by the people in the walls.
At this moment in the story, every single bit of that is weighing down on him like a boulder. And unlike reiner, who lets it out in the form of his breakdowns/personality issues, bertholt just holds all of it in.
Fuck man, i kinda wish he didnt die.
A universe in which Bert survived Shinganshina instead of Reiner would of been interesting as I felt he had so much potential in character development.

When Bertolt cries for someone to find them, he meant because they felt lost. And as children, they felt they had no choice. Had no choice to go to this unknown land, to see their friend devoured, to kill innocent people that led to this point. They felt lost in the darkness with no idea what they really had to do. They were children. As Reiner said "we were children, what did we know about anything?". They didn't. And when they were finally pushed into a corner and forced to reveal their true selves, they felt horrible for what they did but they didn't ask for forgiveness seeing their actions could not be forgiven. It was all for the people back at their homeland. They wanted to go home (and sadly we manga readers know how that turns out), so desperate to go home, they had to do those actions to do it. And when Connie, Jean and Bertolt had their moment, Bertolt broke. He couldn't face anything anymore, he even told them it was ok for them to stain their hands with his blood. Like Reiner, Bertolt and Annie were brainwashed of some sort to do this. Made these three innocent children think this mission was the most important thing, manipulating them.. I dont know about Reiner, but when Bertolt said that, that's what I got from it. But that's just my opinion and feeling behind Reiner, Bertolr, and Annie's actions.

Why did they change it to 'comrades??' He specifically said he and Reiner thought of them as FRIENDS in the manga. There's a clear difference between the two. You don't necessarily have to be a friend with a comrade.
