Interesting, judging a motorcycle against what they’re designed to do. Perhaps that’s what we ought to do, but isn’t it the case that we often do the opposite? Have a bike that’s primarily designed for a closed track and find it’s decent on the street - well, I’m impressed. An “off road” bike behaving civilly on the street? Brilliant. A scooter designed to pop down for chips being excellent for a cross country tour? Yep. Could it be that how we really judge bikes is for how well they do the things they aren’t designed to do?

Im Loving my goldwing, its the second one since my first one in 2018 but there was a wiring loom issue and it kept every so often not starting, my local dealer and Honda where kind enough to give me a direct replacement of a 2019 version so very pleased with it. I was using it to commute into Edinburgh for the a few days a week and it is really is a great bike for that. Its ABS and traction control have come on a few times on the muddy roads in the highlands as well as my local roads and its worked flawlessly. The heated grips / seats just make the journey more comfortable and enjoyable. I put on a slightly higher and wider screen from the base model as im fairly tall and I literary sit in an ocean of calm and still air when riding at all speeds. It has good range and the my DCT model has the 4 modes which in sport mode is very responsive. Love that it has a reverse gear for those times you need a little extra help to move it around. my only gripe and its a small one is that the panniers could have been bigger especially the top box as fitting a helmet in it is troublesome just an extra half inch would have made a huge difference. The part I like the best is that it just works with my iPhone and Apple CarPlay so I can use the map directions and take calls etc all from the main dash

It was more the image of the riders that was the problem. Years ago I was at a rally when the goldwing owners club turned up. It started to rain and the panic in their faces as they all got bike covers out and started protecting their precious bikes. I'd just travelled 100 miles on my hardtail chop and they acted like they couldn't go to the shops without a comfort blanket. They also requested my friend moved his 1200 goldwing rat as it spoilt the image of their club! I am going back a long time ago though, but that's the image they had....

@John LEON I went on a tour in Europe in 82 on my R65 two up, met a wing rider on a mountain pass in Austria/Switzerland and even then amazed at how agile it was. I just don’t see the need for the sheer engine size these days but as TMF has shown it can still shift when required. The prices though are eye watering but each to their own. The wing has always been a good bike, whereas harleys I have never liked they were poor in the 70’s and seem even worse now. I share TMF view on the styling of KTM’s as well

As a former professional/semi-professional athlete I have no clue about bikes whatsoever but like you say I know the Goldwing very very well.By far the most impressive motorcycle I have ever seen.I even checked one out a few years back at my local Honda dealership with no intention of buying one whatsoever but just listen to the dealer rave on about it and just be in it's presence was something to behold.A fantastic piece of engineering I must say and it's sheer size is amazing and so comfortable to sit on,like a couch on wheels.

I live in the northwest mountainous region of New York, lots of great desolate twisting mountain roads with great elevation changes. Except for the relatively long winters, it's really motorcycle paradise.
My good friend moved west to Colorado so we planned a 3,400 mile ride (over 10 days) using Mad Maps Southwest Rides of a Lifetime Road Trip Map including Arches national park, Zion national park, Bryce canyon, Grand canyon, Rocky mountains, Sedona and Santa Fe
I flew into Denver airport and rented a GoldWing. I've owned many different bikes over the years from Ducatis to Harleys and just about everything in between. I fell in love with the GoldWing in the first 5 minutes of riding it!
This bike was fast, smooth, comfortable, handled way beyond expectations and had a legendary reputation for reliability.
It didn't matter if I was doing circles in parking lots or passing sport bikes on the inside of a fast sweeper I knew instantly this was the bike for me!
When I got home I jumped on my Yamaha VStar 1100 and almost crashed into the guardrail at the bottom of my driveway. I couldn't make that thing turn!
Bought a brand new leftover 2012 ABS NAV in 2013 for a little more than 20 grand. Put around 10,000 miles a year on it ( I also have 2 Enduros and 2 dirt bikes)
I change the oil once a year a replace tires as necessary and it's never had an issue of any kind.
I would love to get a new one with DCT but my 2012 is still as amazing as the day I got it so I don't see the point.
Don't see me ever wanting anything else for my main street bike.
Anyone who says anything derogatory about a GoldWing hasn't ridden one!

Great bikes, if they had not shrunk the luggage and the fuel tank I would have bought a third wing. Instead I bought a BMW RT with a top trunk and it has a bigger tank, longer range, and bigger luggage as well as more sporty cornering. The goldwing is a great bike and if you push it it will shock many folks with the level of performance it has, due to high speed cornering I had ground away about half of the foot pegs on each side. A goldwing will never be a bad choice for a bike in some cases it might come in second or third on your want list but the low rpm roll on power is amazing. Nothing comes close to the off idle power of a wing.

    @Trevor_Austin Před 3 lety

Andy, the most important thing you said was that you have to judge a bike against the purpose for which it was intended. I have no doubt that people have gone long distance two-up touring on a 125, have taken Fireblades off-road or others have raced a Nikens. They have proved that it’s possible, but little else. There are bikes that can do more that one job well but you are starting to push the limits of reality (and sanity) if you expect any bike to excel at more than two things. We also have to realise that we have moved well beyond the days when a motorcycle was purchased because you couldn’t afford a car. So with some exceptions a motorcycle is a luxury and not a necessity. As a result, they have become highly specialised and designed for a particular niche in the market. Unfortunately too many people refuse to accept this. The Goldwing is such an example. It is a superb A/B/road motorway tourer, maybe even the best. It competes against the FJR 1300, BMW’s K 1600 and so on. None of these bikes are what could call cheap. All will do a superb job at taking you effortlessly from one place to another yet each has a different features in order to achieve its design goal. Only by having honest, well structured, detailed and balanced reviews such as yours Andy can potential buyers start to zero in on the particular features that are important to them. So again, many thanks for your work.

I remember when the Goldies first came out in the mid 70’s. Here in Australia they were a naked bike and compared to others it was a behemoth. You couldn’t afford to be a short guy and ride this. Riding was the easy part, the stopping at lights or just pushing it around you needed to have your feet well planted. I got a lift with a guy one day and when I reached my destination I got off and the bike went down. This was because the rider could only touch the ground with one foot. I soon found out how heavy the Goldie was lol. These days the bike is bigger, but has more luxury’s and has come along way in 45 years. I know a guy who has an 86 model and it has over 500k on the clock and still goes strong. Thanks for another compressive video/s from Down Under.

That being said, I also have a 2016 Wing bought new in 2019 that I comute on. I find it a blast to ride. I ride it on exactly the same fun roads as my other bikes. 200 mile round trip twice a week. Other than coming to a complete foot down stop she is just as fun, just as chuckable as the others. The wife loves it too. I could easily have it as my only bike. Great review as always TMF!

I have had 2 Gold Wings, but I suspect most people are like me and buy a bike with every intention of 'doing a tour' only to rarely go further than work and back on it plus a couple of bike nights. Soon enough the weight of the bike, the inability to filter, and the terrible mpg figures mean it just sits there parked up in the garage taking the whole garage up to boot...so we trade them for a more practical machine and fondly tell everyone "I used to have a Wing"....

Start off by saying I love your videos and value your opinion. I do have to say I think Honda has yet again missed the mark on a luxury touring motorcycle.
I love the gold wing and have owned 4 of them, However, it is not a long distance tourer that you can carry enough of your essentials on, due to the lack of luggage/gear space, especially if you ride 2 up. And for a bike that costs $35k+ in the US, that is a huge deal breaker.
For the serious long distance touring folks that own gold wings, you’ll always see a trailer in tow because of the lack of storage. For the price, they should include the trailer on every sale.
I’ll stick with my GS, thank you!
Keep up the good work on videos

I guess the main hurdle for most would be that £31k price tag. You'd need to do an awful lot if touring to justify that with a wife/partner who was into that sort of holiday, unless of course you're fortunate enough for money not to be an issue. Back in the real world you could buy a new GS and a new 2nd bike too if you wanted to or be able to do a few trade ins and just have a GS. I'd love one but just couldn't afford £31k for a bike that wouldn't do everything I needed it to. Not sure about the DCT thing either, can't see the point if you have a manual bike with a decent QS on it unless maybe you have problems using a clutch due to a disability etc. Enjoyed this set of reviews Andy, hearing things from a pillion perspective is a rarity that's overlooked by just about every other CZcamsr. keep them coming please

Honda were kind enough to lend me the previous evaluation machine some time ago, and a local dealer was keen to lend me their latest dct. Our thoughts are that both bikes are top tourers, equally comfortable. The dct is surprisingly good, and I was dead against the idea of an auto box before riding it! The price of the current bike is huge, eye watering, but we would have chopped our ST1300 in for a new Wing but for two insurmountable (for us) problems. 1. You cannot store even one full-face helmet on the bike, let alone two - you can get two in a Pan top box, or one in each of the panniers. 2. The build quality is not as good as the previous model, and the year old demonstrator was already rusting, which is very, very un-Honda like - my 200k mile Pan is rust free apart from a bit of corrosion to the downpipes, and the bike's used all year round. The Wing is still the best touring bike on the planet!

I'm not sure I'd agree with not being able to filter on "big bikes". Yes in the confines of town traffic they aren't as nimble as smaller bikes, (but then tourers aren't usually an alternative choice to a smaller bike anyway) but easing past queues on clogged motorways isn't much different, the widest part of most bikes is the bars and few bikes are much wider than standard handlebars. I've filtered on the M25 (who hasn't!) as well as other UK and European motorways on various RT's and a K1600GT, with pillion,, and it's more down to bike handling than the actual bike.

Nice and as comfortable as it is, I would rather do the same ride on a smaller bike and achieve the same results and yet would be more cost effective and self gratifying, I think. In other words, it's a "I want" vs. "I need" comparison. Thanks for the ride along!

Epitome of Honda engineering and agree it is a fabulous touring machine; however my tours typically include primitive/in-paved roads and without pillion. Thus too heavy and narrowly focused for my riding.

Indeed - it does have a specific use case for sure (2 up touring on decent roads)....

The 1800 'Wing is a great bike and definitely on my aspirational list. I have a 1500 'Wing I have owned since new in 2000 and think it needs a big sister to keep it company - Maybe 2021 will see that dream come true....

There is only one - the BMW K1600. Your review convinced me to try and then buy one. You can fit helmets in the panniers too!

Well it's another option for sure - for me the Honda holds its weight much lower and is therefore much more manageable as a big bike (especially as I'm quite a small fella)....

@@TheMissendenFlyer Indeed; we ride what suits. I daren't test this just in case the Mrs likes it more than the K and inflicts serious wallet damage. FWIW you were spot on about the K - I really like it. Keep up the good work.

Agreed.. filtering may be questionable but otherwise is docile and manageable in daily commuting.

Have gone around the Parifiq? Around Paris loads of times and cannot believe how fast Goldwinds filter there, absolutely incredible, I'm on a Triumph Trophy and am not slow, but Parisians are another breed!!

Do you think filtering issues are mind over matter? My GSA handle bars are 55mm wider than the Gold Wing.

Yes quite probably....the more you ride the GW the more confident you get (obvs!)....

yes, i had one of these and had to sell it due to a down turn in finances. Great bike. I now own a GSA and a Triumph speed twin 1200
