  • Easy step by step IMS gas tank install on a Suzuki DRZ-400s.
    Complete with some tips and tricks for a smooth install. This is a very basic and straight forward modification.
    I included a shot of the manufacturers instructions sheet at the very end of the video. It shows a list of all the hardware that's included with the tank. This may be helpful if you got your tank used and you are missing the bolts. If anyone needs I'd be happy to give measurements of the spacers or brackets if you need to make them yourself. I could even replicate them for you. Just leave a comment and I'll get back to you!
    Thanks for watching.

    Tip if anyone gets one of these tanks used without the Mounting screws, the screws that come with motorcycle batteries are the correct length to connect the petcock to the IMS tank since the OEM ones are too long !

    I wish my 3.2 installed so easily. I still can't fit the radiator shrouds. It's a bit silly, but i think I'm actually going to have to file down portions of the tank, as there are asymmetrical bulges at the anchor points of the shrouds. Also, my tank rests on the engine on the petcock side. Like it's just naturally tilted to the left. For $300, the 3.2 IMS should fit perfect.

    • @dualsportdiary1150
      @dualsportdiary1150  Pƙed 3 měsĂci

      They all fit different, even from tank to tank of the same model. Mine required a few bad words and extra time off camera.
      These plastic tanks are Rotational molded, not mold injected. Each one can vary. Most important thing is the cool off out of the oven (mold). They all shrink when they come out. How slow/fast they cool is the (one of the) determining factor. They can twist/warp during that cool off process. Ironically after this installation I supervised a Rotational Molding department in a large plastic case manufacturing plant. While learning the ropes a superior to me mentioned my motorcycle in this video and told me how the tank was a Rotational molded product.
      Consider them hand made. No two are exactly the same.

      @@dualsportdiary1150 I am pleased to report that after a week or two of just being installed on the bike, the tank seems to have settled into its intended shape and everything fits as intended. It's not hitting the cylinder head on the petcock side anymore. The plastics are able to be installed with the original screws. It's wild how drastically it changed shape all by itself. All that was required was a little patience on my part.

      The stock vacuum petcock should always be set to "On". "Prime" should only be used for a few seconds and only used when the carb is completely empty and has no gas.
      An example is the bike ran out of gas and you need to switch to "reserve". First switch to "prime" for like 2-3 seconds then to "reserve". Or when you put on a brand new or used gas tank that is empty. You will set it to "prime" for a couple seconds. You NEVER leave the petcock left on "prime" and NEVER run the bike on "prime" it will flood out like crazy.
      I'll do a video soon as lots of people are confused about how the vacuum operated petcock operates.

      The stock Petcock is vacuum operated. If you turn it on and disconnect the fuel line the gas will not drain out.
      The only way to do that is remove the petcock from the gas tank and let all the gas just fall out and dribble all over your motorcycle. The method I used is the easiest if you have a vacuum operated petcock. You could also siphon it out if you choose. I opted for the fastest method

    Do you know anything about installing the Pingel petcock, which has one centered tube (actually I think it only looks like one tube as there is a Res function on the petcock)? I believe you just plug the vacuum line at the barb with the provided plug. I also got an Acerbic locking gas cap that also works on this tank and it is vented. There is no tube to vent through the cap. I assume I need to plug the vent line then if I use that? Thanks.

    • @dualsportdiary1150
      @dualsportdiary1150  Pƙed 3 lety +1

      Yes Sir, if you remove that vacuum line from the stock vacuum operated petcock then you need to cap that line when using any style of a manual aftermarket petcock.
      As far as the vent tube on your Acerbis locking gas cap, absolutely DON'T cap it off. The carb is gravity fed from the tank, if you cap it off the tank will have issues feeding the carb because as the fuel goes down you won't have fresh air entering the top of the tank.
      If you need, I can do a video explaining it.

    • @davidmunro7923
      @davidmunro7923 Pƙed 3 lety +1

      @@dualsportdiary1150 A video might help for this last part of my question. The locking gas cap does not have a place for the vent tube to go and so far as I can tell, neither does the tank (as you know, the stock tank has a tube for the vent tube to connect to, the IMS has that vent tube run to the IMS gas cap). So with using this different gas cap, I just don't where the vent tube now goes or if it's necessary at all.

    • @dualsportdiary1150
      @dualsportdiary1150  Pƙed 3 lety

      @@davidmunro7923 as long as that gas cap is vented, that's all you need. You don't HAVE to have a tube. You just need it vented. The factory routes that tube to the airbox for smog purposes. They can't have gas fumes vent to the atmosphere. Just make sure the cap IS vented. Don't block the vent. I can still do a video explaining why.
