  • Perhaps the most misunderstood creature, very gentle and docile by nature. They only act mean in their defense mode, given the chance, they will flee. Excellent at killing mice, snakes, and other pest. They are good for the environment and should not be feared and do not carry rabies.

    They are harmless and quite docile, scare easy but slow motion or just observing will usually not frighten them. We feed 3 or so on the porch and can watch from right outside the glass. Each will usually have a personal marking on it, white tips on ears, different shades of gray, or darker patches. thanks for writing.

    • @legatomodi3522
      @legatomodi3522 Před 4 lety +5

      its probably not advised to touch them though. it would be very unlikely to be attacked and even more so to be pursued, and also i dont think they carry diseases, but its very stressful on them when they encounter a human, especially if they are blinded by the light. They show their teeth and gurgle kinda a snarly growl but if that dont work they dont really have a plan B (it works most of the time for most things it encounters). The "playing possum" is an involuntary overstressed anxiety response and it can work itself into a more traumatic shock the older it gets and some of them dont come out of it. They will not harm a person and shouldnt be feared but its important to remember most do not know your intentions and you dont wanna scare the poor lil things too much. feeding them, especially in stormy wintery times and not shooing them away is a very nice and youll probably wont have to worry about it hurting your property or other animals so theres no need to be mean but i wouldnt mess with them too much for their own sake.

      Erin Delic In a word, it is called ignorance, what people don't understand they fear, and what they fear, gets tagged with all kinds of rumors. They do not tear up things like raccoons. And they are not part of the rat family, squirrels are....the list could go on and on but anyway, thanks for writing..

    • @FailureIscritical
      @FailureIscritical Před 9 lety +80

      Wild ones are really dangerous because they'll fight and might have rabies. They're "pests" because they get into garbage cans and spread trash all over the yard. Not unlike cats and dogs(lol) Only these opossums raised by humans since birth are actually safe to pet and love on. But they're so precious.

    • @cudaviper
      @cudaviper  Před 9 lety +434

      FatalError This one was not raised from birth, it was young but gentle from day one. And with all due respect, show me one documented case of rabies in a possum. There are cases, the last one I found was from 2002, and only one in the entire US. The possum is the least likely to have rabies of all mammals. They may appear to be rabid by their self defense mode which included drooling with an open mouth but that does not mean it is rabid. Best regards,,,cudaviper.

    • @BrookBurps
      @BrookBurps Před 9 lety +300

    • @FailureIscritical
      @FailureIscritical Před 9 lety +42

      cudaviper Brook Burps I said "they might have rabies"
      Down here in the south, children are taught to stay away from raccoons and opossums at all costs for fear of rabies. While they might not actually have them, most people do believe that they do. Not as many people as you'd think study up on these animals. They are considered pests because people fear them, and thus dislike them. I've never in my life met a single person who said "its just a opossum go pet it" More people than not fear these animals because of rabies possibilities, even though it may not be true.

    I don't care if I am the only one likes an outcast because I know the feeling. But that possum is adorable. Last night, there was a feral cat brought it's friend, a possum to my doorstep and that possum just hanged out, so gave it some snacks and it crunched so loud and cute. It had dark shiny fur, not nasty looking like some and I filmed it, then researched all about it. Was surprised to see how misinformed I was as to what this creature is and what it is not, that this is a creature you want to keep around to help gather up ticks against lyme disease, that it will help get rid of snakes and mice in the yard, that they do not get rabies because their temperature stays low, etc, etc....
    Thanks for bringing awareness to this animal! Do not know if your baby is still alive. They say that possums only live 1-2 years in the wild. September should be "Possum Awareness Month", and each month an awareness of different animals, especially outcast or endangered animals.

      @cudaviper  Před 9 lety +40

I did read that IF you were to care for one, they MUST have a varied and proper diet as they will develop a bone disease/malformation. Just FYI. I now put large branches in my recycling bin as several have gotten stuck in them cause they couldn't climb out (can't jump, remember). They don't live long and I don't mind helping them out.

    I know what you mean, two completely different animals, the Australian version reminds me of a cross between a monkey and squirrel. Very fast, jumps great distances and quick, they also seem to be very aware. As the north american version is seems to be much slower, not near as keen to surrounding objects, and although they do climb in trees, they move like the koala. On the ground they can get up to speed but nothing like the down under version. thanks for writing.

      ***** Every word we speak in modern english as well as its spelling is the result of someone else's creation and then the adoption of a trending variation of a previous way to speak. Don't be so quick to pass judgement just because you don't see the point. Especially with english, we butcher so many words that are currently used in other languages. I don't personally like intentionally mispelling words, but you don't have be such a dick about it.

    May I ask what is the life expectancy of a domesticated possum? I read 1 to 2 years for those living in the wild and was so disheartened.

    • @cudaviper
      @cudaviper  Před 8 lety +63

      +Klay Re It's true and unexplainable. They have the shortest life span of any mammal that size and scientist don't know why. They sleep a lot and do not move quickly most of the time. They do grow very fast, reproduce the first year, but no matter the quality and care given, it is short compared to a cat or dog. JJ lived 3.5 years and I have heard of one that made it 5, but that is rare. 1 to 2 outside, 2 to 3 inside. Thanks for asking, most do not know this fact and your are so right, it is disheartening.

    • @klayer9990
      @klayer9990 Před 8 lety +2

      +cudaviper Oh, I'm sorry to hear about JJ. I would have never expected they lived only 1-2 years more when in captivity. It reminds me of ferrets, although they can live a bit longer.
      I'm sure JJ's time with you has been wonderful.

      @klayer9990 Před 8 lety

      +Chris Grabenhorst Hmm, I was reading a few articles online and, while some say 5-7 years, others say ferrets can live up to 10, but it's rare.
