One reason you don't find people in the business districts on weekends... There's usually not much residential buildings in the business districts. People who work there ain't going to be still hanging around there on their time off. City folks usually travel out of the cities. And usually people come out night.

I think famous tourist attractions (like the Bund, Nanjing Rd, Yuyuan, etc.) have more crowds at night for the lights. And China cities are quite safe at nights.

Speaking of vegetarian food, IMHO the most famous restaurant in Shanghai is 功德林 ( Shanghai GongDeLin ), their specialty is mocking up meats with veggie ( I guess most are made from soy products like tofu ). Also, some Buddhism temples in Shanghai may also have canteen of vegetarian food. 😀

china can be a very easy or very hard place to travel. if you're not prepared, you won't have as good of a time. first off there are a lot of translate app options, including google offline ones you can download. you can always ask for help and if they don't know enough english they will likely pull out their own translate app. the most important thing is to get one or both the main payment apps set up - there are videos so shouldn't be hard. those apps have built in translators and a lot of sub-apps that can help you do just about everything like get a taxi, rent rooms, get tourist tickets to places, etc. lastly and especially in the bigger cities, it can either be very cheap or very expensive. what you pay in tourist places are typically 2-3x what you would pay if you went to a regular store a block from the main tourist places. a drink can be either $1 or $4, and a bowl of noodles could be $2 or $10 so just depends on where/how you spend your money.

It so nice to see Americans are traveling to China to see what is going on and how China really is for yourself rather than getting to know China from the mainstream media that often spreads distorted news and facts about China for political purposes. I was shocked by how advanced China is than when first visited China 10 years ago. I heard so much negative information about China before I went there. I felt I was cheated and fooled by my friends and mainstream media in the US. I am planning to go back this Fall to see the color change in Northern Chinese cities.

There is no garbage in Shanghai. Did you call that garbage? If so, must be by foreigners or stealth foreign reporters who want to sabotage China. Also, no homeless people, unlike in Japan. I like Japan as I stayed there for a long time and it is very clean but there is also the occasional "garbage" by people who get drunk, etc. Not to mention, the very "clean" New York! 36 hours in a sprawling city like Shanghai. You may as well not go there.

it depends on the area. even in shanghai there are more residential areas where the cleaning crews are less frequent. if there was a recent event, there could be leftover trash on the ground. there are always people who litter.

      重要的是,上海原本只有1800万人口,现在加上农村来打工、旅行的,人口在3000万左右,根本就不是一个数量级,完全没有可比性,我敢说它镜头里拍到的人里几乎没有几个本地人,谁素质高一目了然。

Chinese is the most spoken language in the world. China ranks first among the six official languages of the United Nations. Why do Chinese people need to speak English? Moreover, Western countries are particularly hostile to China, and China in Western news is full of negative news. So now China's education has been reformed and the weight of English has been reduced. If you travel, you can learn a few sentences in Chinese, or just use your mobile phone to translate.
