  • This is a Motormouth couple car review of the 2024 Honda Civic Type R high-performance compact car. The 2024 Honda Civic Type R has a 2L turbocharged 4-cylinder matched to a 6-speed manual transmission with rev match control, 315 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. This is a FWD model and premium fuel is recommended.
There is just one 2024 Honda Civic Type R trim, it starts at $53,293 CAD/$44,795 USD. The interior is racetrack inspired, with red sport fabric seats, Type R badging, a 10.2” digital driver display, 9” touchscreen with navigation, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, a wireless charger, a multi-angle rearview camera, a 12-speaker Bose sound system, a 6-way manual driver’s seat and a 4-way manual passenger seat. The Type R does not offer heated seats or a heated steering wheel.
The 2024 Honda Civic Type R exterior is just as sporty as the interior with a rear wing spoiler, triple centre exhaust with chrome finisher, 19” black wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S summer performance tires and a tire repair kit. You also get a Type R serial number plate, you are in a special club.
The 2024 Honda Civic Type R has an independent strut front suspension, an independent multi-link rear suspension, limited slip differential, an adaptive damper system, power assisted ventilated front disc brakes and Brembo 4 piston aluminum front calipers. There are four drive modes, individual, comfort, sport and +R.
2024 Honda Civic Type R fuel economy, the Type R gets 10.8L/100 km, 22 MPG city and 8.3L/100 km, 28 MPG highway.
Red on Red! Would you choose a Type R with a red exterior and interior, it’s bold?

FL5 owner here, best Honda made. Also a previous FK8 owner. Just know if you are in the market for the car it is not a luxury sport hatch. Its a drivers car that is focused on the connection between the car and the driver. This is the last ICE powered Type R and Type S. Dying breed, so enjoy it while you can.

Funny thing: when the first Integra model came out, I bought an '89 because they advertised it as a sports car, had the engine born of racing and a sports tuned suspension. It was slower and softer than the Honda accord hatchback! I guess the Hondas are still sportier to this day. Just bought a Corolla Cross hybrid for the gas mileage and comfort but now you have me wanting a 6 speed with a hard ride! Thanks again for another great video

Great review! I have to mention from the FL5 Nurburgring record judgment by many others: I don't understand the animosity of the few people who say it's cheating. And here's why: For reference, the record set before the FL5 was by the "Renault Megane RS Trophy R" and no one cared when that one “wasn’t stock” and released in limited numbers (about 500) for homologation purposes (If you could call it that). Basically to say: "We released this version to the public, so the record stands". Meanwhile, Honda comes out with the FL5 Type R “S” (also releases it in limited quantities to the public) and everyone calls it cheating… As far as I’m concerned, Renault started with the “not stock” record. And making the Type R "S" version the stock Type R (as in: the one sold as the ONLY Civic Type R available) would be too bare bones for most buyers to bare with no comfort for the normal road. As it is a race car version with many items/functions of comfort stripped and a different gearing that is not suitable for street driving. It's kind of like a double-edged sword: damned if you do, damned if you don't. Not to mention, lots of FL5 owners are switching to the Integra Type S's ADS because they find the ride to be too stiff. So the FL5 broke the record. But I still see people calling it cheating. It makes no sense.

Shopped the entire segment and happy to say I am the proud owner of a Championship White FL5 (purchased under MSRP). The Type R was simply head and shoulders above all the others you mentioned from a driving experience perspective. The steering, suspension, driving position, seats, as well as the most gloriously silky 6 speed transmissions available on any car at any price made my decision pretty simple. Nevertheless, all of these cars have their own personality, quirks and some even offer more utility and creature comforts (Golf R comes to mind). All represent solid bang for the buck. The FL5 will never be the fastest car on the planet but it handled the best out of all of these options. Golf R is a nice car but I felt it was busy trying to be everything to everyone being a good all 'rounder . I simply found that it didn't really do anything "special" in my eyes that made it stick out. Great car if you need AWD and want heated seats. Hyundai to me is another car that punches above its weight class but really isn't a hot-hatch IMO. It is a def a car worth driving but still needs more work in the driving experience department(and is not the best looking car either). Acura is an up-market FL5 with ugly tacked on rear fender flares and a better exhaust note. Didn't think it was worth the premium for my application. The GR Corolla was a no almost immediately given the after-thought tacked on rear fenders and awful driving position. The cheapest looking interior out of all of these cars. I understand just like music, cars and the experiences they elicit are subjective but there is something special about the JDM built Type R. Time for some more coffee !

The only thing I miss on my Integra Type S that this Civic Type R has is the bucket seats, the integrated navigation for travelling outside of Canada, the chassis badge number and the large wing since I'm still young and into the boy racer look. Everything else though I definitely appreciate the softer suspension, heated seats and steering wheel, exterior I personally like the sharper looks and the slightly better interior materials and features including the HUD.

Type R all day every day. Dedicated drivers car.
Japanese reliability and longevity.Outstanding 6 speed manual transmission. The best seats in the business. Huge cargo carrying capacity which becomes enormous when rear seats are folded down.
    Menacing wide stance.
Ridiculous cornering capability and grip levels.
This car will destroy all its competition in the same price bracket including the awd competitors. The fact that it is so fast from point to point with only front wheel drive is a testament to the phenomenal engineering. Once that golf R is out of warranty and starts costing you a fortune the civic will only be just broken in.
I have watched and read hundreds of reviews on the type r and it’s competition and nearly every single reviewer with any credibility gives the win to the type R

As far as some of the cheap outs on the interior, in Europe and Japan, the Type R does get alcantara upholstery for the rear seats. It also gets the alcantara steering wheel as standard (which is a USD $400-plus option in the US). Those models also get an alcantara shift boot instead of the cheap looking fake leather in the North American versions. As for the lack of a third seat in the rear, Honda claims it’s due to weight limitations of the Type R (and Type S) suspension, which is only rated to carry four 170-something pound adults.
As far as ride quality between the Type R and the Type S, a lot of Type R owners are buying the suspension control module from the Type S and swapping it into the Type R. The part is around $200 USD and the swap is fairly easy, just plug and play.

Type R anytime. I have had the FK2, the FK8 and now the FL5 in championship white. There are quite a bit differences between the USA model and the European model. Those differences are chosen by the import companies, not Honda itself. The European model has black alcantara backseats and an alcantara steering wheel. Another difference is the EU model has black tinted windows at the back and backside. The USA model has the Bose system, the EU model has the standard sound system. I don't care the standard sound system because the quality is overruled by the road noise anyway. The EU model has 329 HP and in reality some 15 more because of the 98 and even 103 octane gasoline we have here. You mentioned the automatic transmission. No way I want that because the manual transmission is THE fundamental part of the ride joy this car gives besides the splendid road holding. There is one thing I am going to change on my FL5 and that is the suspension. On the bad Belgian roads the suspension is to stiff, so I ordered the software module of the Type S, and I am not the only one. It would have been a better sale policy if Honda should have given the possibility to choose between the two modules without extra costs when ordering the car. Nevertheless, after already more than a year driving this beast I enjoy it every single moment. Reliability or the lack of is another reason not to choose for a VW.

As a chassis engineer myself, do you guys realize how hard it is to engineer a 5 door hatchback of this size and keep the weight under 3,200lbs while still keeping the bank vault structural integrity that this car possesses? Complaining about no rear heated or ventilated seats and no charging for phones seems a little ridiculous in a “Type R” product, especially when (as far as I know, I don’t work for Honda) even higher end Civic models don’t come equipped with those features

I ordered the CTR 8 months ago, switched to the Integra Type-S few months back when I saw it coming into the market.
I must admit it's a superb machine and I'm still uncertain which one looks better.
Anyways, been in the 40's with kids & living up north where winters are harsh and roads bumpy, the ITR remains (even if more pricey) the "more responsible" choice.

Have you considered Golf R or Subaru WRX? I don't know how responsible a FWD car with over 300hp going to front wheels will be in the harsh and bumpy roads up north. It already wheel hops and spins like crazy on normal roads.

@@janoycresnova9156 Golf R or WRX would make winter season more enjoyable, yes. But, then I'll have to compromise on the driving experience which Honda is AND reliability. I've seen some comments of owners of the ITS living in the North and with good tires it seems it's not much of a deal... Will have to adapt my driving accordingly also.

If the Integra had better seats and an optional sunroof, it would be an absolute homerun. The MKVIII Golf R is good on paper but is absolutely plagued with software and quality issues and just isn't that engaging. Chose my Civic Type R over the Integra Type S and have no regrets. It's the exclusivity (especially in Canada), the better flowing/integrated wide fenders, the bucket seats, and the +R digital gauge that win out for me. If I want slightly more comfort, I'll eventually swap in the Integra's damper module.
