    Thanks Chris. Such a brilliant and cheap way to at least check your shots and adjust accordingly. I’ll be giving this a go for sure.

    Really nice drill Chris, thanks. I have been working on something similar from your previous tutorials. I found that two things help me achieve this position at impact, which is keeping the right elbow looking more towards the ground at the top of my backswing and having a flat or even slightly bowed left wrist. Previously I would get my left wrist a bit cupped, which makes it extremely difficult to shallow the club and get the hands ahead of the ball without opening the face - just as you described.

    That explains why I tend to push the ball to the right then. I have good shaft lean but lack the wrist turn. Will definitely give this a go - it could be a game changer! ⛳

    Great drill. When I setup I lean the shaft with face square which works for me & gives consistency 😁 any disadvantages to that? Nice vid as always 👍

    I get great compression on my punch shots, for the obvious reason I play them back in my stance and lean my weight forward. But to get compression on standard iron play, I have to load 70% on lead leg. This drastically changes my ball flight compared to if I stood 50/50 at set up.

    Just come across this and there is another way to achieve this ie....
    If you use the top edge of the club to line up, keep the shaft straight and with a neutral grip..... this will make the face closed but trust your swing and the dynamics take over returning the club face square ensuring a straight flight.... well worth practicing 🎊🌟🤩🥳

    I found that if you line the shaft straight to the top line of the club (making it closed)at address then at strike the hands come through first bringing the face of the club through square..... does work 🎊🌟🤩🥳

  • @dementus420

    I wish I would've seen this drill years ago. I ended up doing this move (out of pure necessity), but I used the toe of the club. I just made sure it was creating the right arc and closing down through the ball and my wrists had to accommodate the movement. I just drilled that over and over and over and over. I'm still dialing it in, but I can tell anyone who has never unlocked your wrists that you aren't really playing golf proper until you learn this. Golf is a game of compression and then spin. After you learn to compress it, then you have to get the spin under control. As much as possible anyway. Lol.

    Chris thanks - this is another great video and explanation but I feel it's missing a critical treatment of the right elbow and right elbow rotation as a possibly more robust way to get the clubface square with the shaft lean. Can you explain back why you think left wrist to square the clubface and not right elbow? If you look at the recent Pete Cowen video on the Danny Maude channel (ignore Danny of course), he sees right elbow rotation as the critical thing to do to get the clubface square - not left wrist rotation. Another youtube video from Martin Borgmeier talks about 'hacking' golf using Bryson's technique to create a '3-d flatspot' and it's the same thing - right elbow doing it, not left wrist. Cheers

    Great drill and appreciate that you gave credit to Andrew Rice. However, as I requested with regard to another recent video, I would be most grateful if you would provide the information and videography as to how the *right* wrist can achieve the desired goal. First of all, we swing the club with *both* hands. Secondly, most of us are right handed, and find it easier to manipulate and monitor what we do with that dominant hand, if only one hand is shown in a drill. Ideally, you might note how *each* hand moves in all videos so that everyone can completely benefit. Thank you very much for your consideration. It’s the only thing keeping you from being perfect, LOL.

    What magnetic pointer are you using?? I bought one which is 10 in length (excluding the magnet), and to pick up the cup, the face has to be so severely delofted, the 7 iron turns into a 2 iron. It appears to me that my pointer is too long.

  • @wazzi1784
    @wazzi1784 Před rokem

    Chris, great video. Does this give you a sense that you should always be closing on the downswing? I get confused between shallowing the club and trying to close the face on the downswing which this drill seems to advocate. I’m sure this is where many of us are getting confused.

    • @ChrisRyanGolf
      @ChrisRyanGolf  Před rokem

      If you can shallow the shaft and close the face then you are well on your way to PGA Tour golf! That really is the holy grail, those two moves together and so powerful, incredibly hard to do together but really good concepts there

    I’ve always wondered, why am I better off hitting a higher-lofted iron de-lofted with compression than a lower-lofted iron without? For example, why should I prefer hitting a de-lofted 7-iron rather than a straight-up 5-iron to the green?

    • @ChrisRyanGolf
      @ChrisRyanGolf  Před rokem +1

      Great question Bob, the two swing ms wouldn’t be used at the same time, I’d look to hit everything de lofted with compression and just have that as your normal swing. The advantage is generally two fold, it allows you to strike closer to the sweet spot more often plus it also tends to almost always create a more negative attack angle which is better for ball striking and performance from the rough

      Yes that’s definitely an option if that was easier for you to repeat. Key here is that the impact and set up are different, so we just have to find the best way to navigate that through the swing

    • @ChrisRyanGolf
      @ChrisRyanGolf  Před rokem

      Yes it will be in most cases, different amounts depending on the golfer and the club, this is a drill, thr movements won’t always be exactly the same as those seen in the swing, the speed in the full swing would cause the wrists to release a little more and the club to work down

  • @ralphpagan3371
    @ralphpagan3371 Před rokem

    Why not close the face first , then grip club ?????

    • @ChrisRyanGolf
      @ChrisRyanGolf  Před rokem

      I mean no real reason why you can’t do this, how much you have to close the face depends on how much shaft lean there is so you would have to close the face different amounts for each club, so either method would have its difficulties, but no reason why you couldn’t if that worked for you

  • @michaelcangey2406
    @michaelcangey2406 Před rokem

    I'd disagree with actively or consciously pressing forward or closing wrists to square face.......
    The hands are ahead naturally then stop.... the body then has the back hip turned through which puts face square.... the timing of the kinetic chain accounts for power and accuracy.... the hands move naturally to conform. Manipulating for ball flight or added ooomph is another thing of course.

    • @ChrisRyanGolf
      @ChrisRyanGolf  Před rokem

      Hey Michael, agree with a lot of this, however I don’t believe that the face squares on its own for a large number of golfers, some great data out there showing how the face squares and it’s largely down to what the hands and wrists do in the downswing

    • @michaelcangey2406
      @michaelcangey2406 Před rokem

      @@ChrisRyanGolf maybe we only disagree on perspective....
      I can't imagine how one would swing a club and not have their wrists turn through... same with throwing a ball or whatever it is. If position is correct and the athletic move creating the kinetic chain is performed.... then the conscious manipulation of wrists and hands become moot, only for subtlety adding power or shaping shots.

  • @mickbanner

    • @ChrisRyanGolf
      @ChrisRyanGolf  Před rokem

      Could do but you then don’t get the benefits that this impact produces, attack angle, striking the ball higher on the face etc. taking less loft would mean a shallower approach, lower strikes and so performance would be poorer

    This is what frustrates the life out of me when it comes to CZcams videos
    Ive watched dozens, upon dozens, upon dozens of your golf videos plus numerous other golf coaches and none of the videos have ever said to twist your forearm/wrist on the downswing to square the face
    In your previous multiple videos where you are striking your irons clean and they are flying through the air at target did you do this arm twist?
    If so why did you (or anybody else) ever mention it before?
    I hope I don't come across as rude (apologies if I do) it's sometimes hard to get your point across via txt
    This video is telling me twist my arm on the downswing to square up the face, why have none of dozens of your other videos ever told me to twist my arm if that's what I'm supposed to be doing?
