- 'The Grey' is a cinematic concept trailer set in The Old Republic!
It was made as a tonal representation of a live action script I wrote back in 2019. When I finished the script, then brought some of the characters to life working with concept artists, I became obsessed with the idea of seeing these characters move. This is my fist time diving into Unreal Engine. Over the past two years I've taught myself enough to mostly accomplish what I was going for, and evolving along the way. What started off as an idea for a few select simple shots, turned into this behemoth. Like I mentioned, this is my first time diving into Unreal, or any kind of CGI for that matter. I'm an editor by trade, so while I'm familiar with VFX and work flows from that standpoint, I am in no way an artist. There are so many things I would love to fix here given the time, but I felt like it was the right moment to finally put my pencil down and let this thing fly.
I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I did creating it. There's a bit of a story summary of the film below.

"Set thousands of years before the events of Skywalker -- during the GREAT GALACTIC WAR of the OLD REPUBLIC, 'THE GREY' is a galaxy sprawling space epic that deals with the psychological ramifications of manipulation, loss, and conflict within one's mind.
Apprentice to the Sith Lord, DARTH MALGUS, MHOLLAR is a hardened Emperial General with a strong connection to The Force. Years prior, a young and eager Darth Malgus abducts the newborn Mhollar from his parents the very night he emerged into the galaxy. The blood thirsty tyrant, laying waste to Mhollar's young family.
Malgus, raising the child in his own image, imprinted his ruthlessness, tenacity and combat prowess onto the young boy. However, the task proved challenging as the boy's natural essence repeatedly rejected the Sith ways. After 30 years, Malgus succeeded in transforming Mhollar into the hardened warrior who stands by his side, head of the Sith Lord's army. However, conflict still clouds Mhollar's mind. The powerful dark side user still at odds with his true self."

So incredible. Makes me wish we could have a show set in the Old Republic utilizing the animation from the older trailers.
They announced an old Republic movie but it's been delayed because of the mandalorian movie and the. I just hope they don't make it about Revan. With a movie budget if they don't do a huge battle between a bunch of Sith and Jedi then Disney should just give up at this point.
I remember playing the first one and thinking that the story was better than all three of the prequels and it was. Playback amazing.
I really don't want them focusing on characters from the games though on what new characters. I don't want to watch Revans origin story again.

I just saw a vid where you can import Blender files into unreal for rendering which is a huge gamechanger. it is like 10x faster i think or much more.

Yea I did that on a few occasions. I used blender for a lot of modeling stuff. The slowest thing about UE5 right now is Path Tracing render time for complex scenes. But they are fixing a lot very fast.

Truth be told, when I was watching it, I thought it was an actual star wars game cinematic. I was thinking, yeah, we'll see. Been here before. Then I saw that it was concept not made by a studio. Really well done. I seriously thought there was a new game coming out.

I love this trailer. You captured what any SW fans loves about the franchise, the high octane action in contrast with beautiful scenery and deep reflections into what it means to walk the path between good and evil. The sense of struggle: purpose and also wonder and duty is all here. I love it. Ive seen it like 5 times now. The way you composed those shots and made the cuts is fantastic. I'm judging visuals of course, since I don't know the story, but seeing such a trailer in live-action from LucasFilm would give me goosebumps. Heck, I would even welcome back Rian Johnson, just to have something fresh and divisive to discuss, rather than blank works, that in my opinion Filoni and Favreau are currently making.

Think this is a really cool concept, that smirk in the cell was perfect in so many ways. I think the only thing Im missing is that moment when he decides to make a turn to the light, what gives him the ability to look passed the dark side for the light? Coming through the fire I really wanted to see a hint of the yellow eyes there, thinking he could project a bit of the darkside even now working for the light. Really impressed

Unfortunately no. I wouldn't do the script justice. My hope is this trailer makes enough noise Lucasfilm see's it.
When someone else remembers the OLD Republic. Amazing video! Revan got captured by the Emperor but was rescued by the Republic three centuries later. Veradun, or Darth Malgus, attempted to create a new empire and was destroyed. Meetra Surik the Jedi Exile helped the Republic and Jedi defeat the Emperor, Tenebrae, in his true form. Amazing games.

This is simply incredible. I’m seriously blown away. The visual quality is top notch, and there seems to be a well sculpted and engaging story lying right beneath the surface of this trailer.
