first of all krillin would have to compete with yamcha and tien for that prize money and even then whos to say that chi-chi might get goku to fight fot prize money considering how poor they are and if that fails he could possibly beg for bulma to give him money and another question who is richer bulma and her family or hercule and videl?
Bulma's family owns a brand that compresses any kind of object into portable capsules. They created and innovated hammerspace I'm sure bulma and her family are trillionaires with that type of technology.
Chi-Chi comes from royalty so she has money. And I think goku deliberately stopped competing in tournaments annually in the real show.

In fact i like the piccolo gohan and krillin's part in this original filler season. You know, they finally win a "final boss" without Goku! But this TFS version it's great too :)
I was so grateful, too. When we got to that point, I was like, "Ugh, the Garlic Jr. saga. Hopefully TeamFourStar can salvage this."
They took a non-canon, poorly-written filler storyarc and skipped the whole thing while making Popo look even more badass.
I was so impressed.

In the original, Garlic Jr. had a whole mini arc that lasted several episodes. It was complete filler, though, so TFS cut it mercifully short.
I just realised that when you first see krillin drive off with maron it starts playing Gold Digger, clever shit tfs
Its kinda sad you guys weren't aware of the original DBZ's storyline, or fanbase, when watching this. To put things into context, Dragonball Z has a bunch of filler episodes (like most anime), but it usually just shits on every established fact or character with nonsensical stuff. In this case, the Garlic Junior saga (about 5 episodes) was hated by a vast majority of the fanbase for precisely that reason; it crapped all over the characters and how strong they were at this point. Even TFS' fanbase practically BEGGED TFS not to do that saga (and I can say this because I was an active member on their original forums before they were removed).
TFS in turn trolled all of us by making a completely new intro with the garlic jr characters, as well as this opening. Needless to say; people absolutely loved the way they handled this.

Spaz boys just that u know krillin, piccolio and gohan fought against garlick jr like 40 min long and in the end gohan got realy angrya and pushed garlick jr back in the deadzone they just did this with popo because it takes a long time to do an abridged episode like 2 months and they dont wanted do make the thing with garlick jr 3 episodes long
I loved what the abridged series did with the garlic JR saga. It was really a very low point of the actual show and rather boring.
So instead abridged series just had popo take care of everything.

This was actually an entire filler arc in the show. They had Garlic Jr from the first movie return as a villain,(which sucked for me, I hadnt seen the movies yet) wherein he released a gas which made them all evil (that was where the clip of Yamcha biting Piccolo was from) and other stuff. It's a pretty despised arc among DBZ fans, but TFS managed to turn it into something funny as usual. :)

im fine with this arc being compact into one ep. but it definitely wasn't a bad mini series by any means. they brought back a vilian that has history with the god of earth and it didn't feel outta place. back when this arc aired, no one was complaining about this being a "filler" arc. hell, the term wasn't even being used like that during the time. I'll say this much, i found garlic junior arc more enjoyable than dbs's 1st 2 arcs.
Can't wait for episode 32... Trunks is coming.

He was Garlic Jr. hence the joke at the end 'it was nothing but garlic!' He came back for a very short arc in the regular series, and you've already watched the dead zone movie with him, teamfourstar (and popo) just ended the arc very quickly because it's really not that interesting.

Explanation: As I've said before, anime adaptations of manga series (like Dragon Ball Z) always seem to have the problem where the anime catches up to the manga very quickly, and so the anime needs to find ways to waste time in order to allow the manga to proceed with the story. Dragon Ball Z approached it in two ways: filler and dragging things out. The most notable instance of filler was the Garlic Jr. Saga, in which they brought back the villain of the first DBZ movie and essentially wasted 11 episodes worth of time to allow the manga to get going after the end of the Frieza Saga. However, TFS clearly didn't feel like adapting a storyline as inconsequential and drawn-out as this, so they utilized their take on Popo to skip the ENTIRE THING. The plotline with Krillin's girlfriend was a minor part of the original story; the stuff with Garlic Jr. was the real meat of this filler arc, and they gave absolutely no fucks in writing their way out of having to adapt it.
What's even more brilliant is that TFS acted as though they were going to adapt the whole thing: the splash image behind the disclaimer and the opening theme, for example. Then, at the last second, they show their hand and say that they're essentially skipping it so that they can move on to the androids. Although admittedly, they did foreshadow this decision with the whole "Piccolo getting bit by Yamcha" part (that was from the original arc, where Garlic Jr. releases some gas that turns people into vampires or some shit). Why would they use that for a one-off gag if that's what happens later? Obviously, because they're skipping it.
TL;DR: The creators of the DBZ anime added a filler arc after Frieza to waste time to allow the writer of the manga to get further in the storyline. It kinda sucks, so TFS used Popo to skip it and move the hell on with the story.
