Having played through Sun/Moon 5 times, I was able to notice every single little difference in USUM. I actually liked how they were very similar to the originals yet still had enough differences to make them feel like their own games

In case anyone is wondering from 2023 & beyond: US & UM are identical to S/M, but have extras as mentioned in the video. However, some minor changes in the later games, you cannot capture Bounsweet or geodude but have to breed their evolved forms.
There are a few version exclusives, including Pokémon not found in SM, not many & the biggest differences aside from US/UM having more post game content is the time differences in S/US and M/UM will affect what time of day it is in your game. Also yes these games can be played using the older 3DSs. Good luck and have fun if you’re just starting out.

Though it annoys me at times, the spike in difficulty in this game made me quite happy overall. The elite 4 was the only real easy time I had when playing, and everything else was pretty challenging, especially totem togedamaru. Wasnt expecting that hedgehog to be difficult at all.

After 7 or 8 years of not playing pokemon due to financial issues, i started playing Ultra Moon and damn it is so awesome! The whole story, gameplay and specially the end-game content and the stuff you can do online is just waaay to fun for me. Specially when i’m new to IV, EV and etc. I love and got addicted again to pokemon because of Ultra Moon.
It’s been 4 years now is the gaming? I beat so many games over the last 4 years I’ve been catching up big time on my Pokémon and I’m still learning 4 years later 🙌🏻

The one problem I have with the game is that the story feels watered down compared to the original
Lillie’s character is undermined by necrozma’s story, and I prefer character development over game mechanics and Pokémon

It seemed like it was planned, as there's videos of unused walking and running animations, but it was never implemented.
TheForgery probably wasn’t implemented because the idea wouldn’t fit in the games. Sm already pushed the 3ds a lot and with all the new added content in usum it truly pushed what the 3ds could do, plus they updated the graphics and textures more and that really made it hard for them to add every Pokémon walking behind you.

Seems likely but if true, then I wonder why did Gamefreak even bother working on the animations in the first place? It's starting to look like it was going to be put in the game but after some work, it was either realized it would lag the game too much or/and due to time constraints.
I wish graphics weren't heavily emphasized though, as the games were pretty laggy, at least for double-battles. There's a notable framerate drop when there's at least 4 Pokemon at the same time. Double battles are already unpopular and with the lag, it might further kill off any remaining popularity for them.

Emerald and Platinum: added interesting details to the narrative to make it better.
Ultra: completely ruined everything that made Lillie and Lusamine great characters replacing it with a generic stop the evil legendary plot.

Honestly Ultra Sun and Moon were the games that should have been released. The new areas and mini stuff they included made it worth playing again . 10/10 in my opinion..

While the climax of ultra is kinda dull, I love ultra sun a lot more than I did normal sun. Lillie staying and lusamine being not a complete asshole are great changes.
But Lusamine being an complete asshole was the main reason for me to prefer the story of this Generation

Elite four easier :/ wow that made me sad. In sun and moon I felt the Elite four like a challenge again after some time and that was great
Martin Eliecer Mitre Thomas but the rest of the game was a lot more challenging then sun and moon. It was probably super easy because you had to deal with Ultra Necrozma, which is probably the most challenging Pokémon battle ever.

Tbh the issue is that they marketed the game as different. Interviews with the developers said that the game differs halfway in, which isnt true at all. It differs in the end and in the post game. So you basically have to play through sun and moon AGAIN which is THE slowest game in the whole of the series. I was ready for a whole new adventure around halfway through the game when all I got was....well, pretty much nothing. Mantine surf and photos arent exactly funny repetitive actions. They become taxing. And the only "pokemon" they added were ultra beasts, which I don't really count because again, they're post game legendaries (even tho they're technically not legendaries since you can find em continuously). All in all, does this game make me not want to purchase future games? Of course not. But was I disappointed in the way they delivered the game? Very much so

I hated that more than anything.
I have over 300 hours into Ultra Moon. And it was worth every penny. The content goes on for days and it never ends.
So 12 or 13 real reasons, and 4 or 5 of those were “there’s more pokemon”
After playing through moon and ultra sun, I cannot justify the full game price tag at all. Ultra sun felt like a content pack for the original that I wouldn’t have paid more than $15 for if I knew it beforehand. Most of it doesn’t add any depth at all, like the pikachu park and mantine surfing (fun the first couple times admittedly but not fun to grind for surfing pika and BP), and the story that is added seemed like just that, like they tacked it on. I thought the story in SM was just fine.
Finally, yes you can catch all the legendaries, but when you start incorporating that in every generation you get people like me who don’t feel compelled to after catching all the legendaries in ORAS.
What's different? Not enough, especially before the post game. It reminded me of Pokemon Yellow's differences. It's no where near the caliber of Black 2 + White 2.

The presence of the Ultra Recon Squad is quite refreshing, especially since you never know when you're going to encounter them. The trials all have little bits of changes to make them fresh, including two entirely new trials. There are about 100 additional Pokemon spread throughout Alola. The story's final act is completely different due to Necrozma, and overall, the game has more difficulty. That enough changes for you?
If it were just a single game - combination of Sun and Moon - then I would be satisfied. But releasing two games, marketing it as if it were made with everything learnt from previous DS games, but contain = exact same annoying hand-holding, the endless cut scenes, the stupid look on the player's face, the story line that has been copied and pasted then edited slightly like some plagiarized essay, Lillie's family feud now making zero sense, and festival plaza - is not good enough for the price they're asking.
i know i’m like 6 years late but in my opinion, usum felt way more of a complete game than sun /moon. the story (and certain story events) in sun and moon may be better but in terms of what is the better overall game, usum clears

This game is awesome GGG, the story was similar to the last games, it reminded me how Platinum was the completed Diamond and Pearl game. So naturally, Ultra Sun and Moon are very different story wise because of Necrozma, it's like the main story in Ultra Sun and Moon is a good ending where Guzma and Lusamine changed to be good. That's what I think of Ultra Sun and Moon.

Okay, so here's a question that's been bugging me. I haven't played Sun or Moon yet, I got out of Pokémon thanks to life getting in the way. But now I've gotten back into Pokémon after stabilising, so should I get Sun/Moon OR save the money and get the Ultra versions?

My favorite feature is that ultra beasts and most legendaries aren't shiny locked. It's the reason I bought Ultra Sun.
Also, it seems like more happens during postgame. I'm slow, so I'm still not done with my game, but I decided to do a ghost monotype team, and it makes going through Alola again a nice experience.
A lot of people have been complaining that this game isn't any different from it's predecessors, when in reality it's a vastly different game with much more post content that you can do, while there are a lot more side quests, including mystery events that'll be added later for you to enjoy in the post game, even when you come back to recent islands for whatever reason, there are side quests for you to do, this game feels complete than the first one, and Gamefreak is known to release games later, so that they can expand on that region and give us more than just the appetizer, the post game for US&UM is way better than S/M, for the simple fact that it pushes you to fight every team boss that have high leveled pokemon, not to mention that the totem pokemon are strong as fuck this time around, a lof of people complaining are the same people who worship Emerald, W2/B2, and sad to say, Platinum (Which is my favorite pokemon) Sinnoh is my favorite region, but the people who are complaining also wanted Pokemon Z, Kalos didn't even fuckin expand on it's region story, but for those of you thinking that this game is just a rehash, try playing it, and getting deeper into the game and come back, US&UM is amazing, it expanded on the region right, just like W2/B2 did, so I don't see what people are complaining about.
I'm just sad that out of all of my new theme team crew I CAN'T catch a Yamask in Ultra Sun or Moon... T_T
That's because B2W2 are more of an sequel to BW rather than an enhanced version. It continues the story on where it left off and adds alot more contents & changes through the region in the past years that made the journey through the game different and more intriguing. If USUM would've been an sequel or an DLC to Sun & Moon, than I'm pretty sure all be forgiven. But even than, it doesn't compelled to Emerald or Platinum since they added an whole lot more through the contents and different, yet better story driven than USUM has.

BW2 is definitely my second favorite in the series, Sinnoh is my first. Lets hope that the newest entries have a more compelling story too
Skydivision. Yeah. And fair enough. My favorites are BW/B2W2 combined. But I still love Platinum as well. It's my 2nd favorite. Opposite of mine. But still great Pokemon games.
Also, the only reason why people wanted Z Version is because both X & Y left out huge quality and contents that makes them pretty mediocre games. If Z version would've happened, it would improved alot of things from X & Y to make Kalos games more fun. Kinda like how Platinum did for Sinnoh from Diamond & Pearl.

It's more like if Royal only changed the second half of the story and the changes mainly just removed a bunch of character development and any themes the original had.

They got rid of the special moment with Lillie and you in the cave on the island completely unnecessarily. SM is superior to USUM.
Question: I didn't enjoy Pokemon Moon, because the whole game felt like my hand was held while being led through the entire story. Also many new Pokemon, especially the Ultra-Beasts, weren't really interesting to me, just like the Alola region, partially due to being divided into 4 smaller islands and a laboratory instead of a large connected world. So basically I couldn't enjoy the dicovering-part of the game (despite avoiding pretty much every info before playing it). Would you still recommend UltraSun/UltraMoon to me, as a casual Pokemon-Gamer?

You clearly never played Black & White 2. They are completely different stories from start to finish. No, its never been cool that GF charges full price for a "definitive" version of the game thats the same in almost every way, people like you just defend them and say its alright for some messed up reason, like your suffering from Stockholm Syndrome or something. B & W 2 are the only exclusions of the games you listed because they ARE actually different games.

BW2 were drastically different. New Story, new areas to explore, Old characters pursuing their goals. It’s very different than Black and White and don’t count it as a third version as they are sequels. I like third versions and loved USUM.
I think the problem is that its 2 games. If you're just gonna make the same game all over again then make it one game (ex: yellow, crystal, emerald, platinum) and make it the perfect experience of that region. This was advertised as a sequel (ex: bw2) which Sun and Moon could of used because it felt so rushed. Could you imagine a sequel with a gym system and pokemon league? I defiently could. And also timing, 1 year later? Bw2 came out a year later so we all asumed it was something like that

I admit there are huge steps taken here like interacting with pokemon and going in quests, but these feel like prototypes and could have done more with them. Probably features theyre still trying and will hopefully expand on for the switch games (since it has been rumored they will be more overworld interactive like zelda games so this would make sense).

I love that there is a lot more story to it , the fact that they brought older villains into it , and that you can catch more Pokémon. Especially legendaries. After 90 hours of gameplay , I loved it

I found Moon extremely easy, I beat the league on the first try and I only needed a few max revives and potions over the entire thing- Kukui did give me a hard time though. I'll probably get UM because of the higher difficulty, my Decidueye blazed through the entire game and most of the time I didn't need my full party
Most Pokémon games are this way, honestly if you really want to have fun, store your starter and go catch 2 different mons and run the gyms or trials (depending on what game you’re playing) that way. Catch something decent but go rank it the 2 mons up and move forward. It’s fun not using the actual starter the6 give you, I used a Pidgey and rockruff once

Ultra sun is better. They are basically the same game but ultra is the definitive edtion.

This is my fav pokemon game. I've had soo many memories with it. And will never forget those times. I remember when I got my torcat to an incineroar and just smashed through the game. My team was the following in sun and moon:
Incineroar
Pikachu
Lunala
Type null
Lurantis
Alola marowak
I replayed ultra moon like 20 times. These where the pokemon I used. Some more than once:
Incineroar-15 times
Tyranitar-20 times
Hawlucha-20 times
Noivern-15 times
Krookidile-10 times
Metagross-3 times
Garchomp-2 times
Dicidueye-10 times
Primarina-8 times.
Guys ik this is an old vid but if you are gonna replay ultra sun and moon. I would for definitely trade that sparrow for the hawlucha called cha. He is in the poke centre just outside the first trial. And he already had a fighting move. So that's good against the gunshoosh or raticate. He is just great throughout the game as well. Also before the water trial, there is a poke centre with this guy who trades a nougat called noinoi. I would suggest getting a noibat then and not in the first trial voucher it is a traded pokemon, so it gets EXP faster. Even though that they are both flying types, have them on ur team.

Ultra Sun and Moon feel like a brand new game? Don't make me laugh, Ultra Sun and Moon was just a upgrade to the original sun and moon it literally was the same game. Game Freak really needs to stop doing this, If they were going to make second version of a pokemon game, then they need to make it exactly like pokemon black/white 2, where the location and region is the same but story is completely different and so is the protagonist and his rival.

MasterMike 000 Absofrickenlutely my friend, I hated all of the third games in a certain region, my only exceptions are Emerald and White/Black 2 because Emerald combined both Team Magma and Team Aqua, which definitely made a way better story and White 2 just completely blew me away with the new protagonist and the new story.
They do feel like a brand new game.
They removed the character development and themes that made original Sun & Moon's narrative so great just to replace it with a generic stop an evil legendary plot.

I say if you don't have either, you should just get the Ultra versions, but even if you have the Sun or Moon get the Ultra versions, have a lot more.

This should be DLC or a FREE update its a rip off people if you have moon just hack the new pokemons into your game is not worth it (expect new ultra beast and 1 new legendary) oh yeah and dusk form lycan

Patches and events are essentially free content that is spread out over the years between games. These include stat changes, new movesets and new pokemon. That is damn near a third of the differences the Ultra versions offer.
To be blunt, I don't think this should have been DLC, I think they should have waited a year and released this instead of even bothering with Sun & Moon at all.
excuse me but could you mention what update put new pokemons or items or moves that werent in the original game and you could not hack in? its on the game itself, its a total different thing take for example monster hunter 4 and ultimate they added new weapon mechanics a new set of ultimate mission introducing more than 15 big monsters 2 more villages and 2 new rarity of sets thats an update not this... they just put like 3 new pokemons and a bunch of z moves and more pokemon who could be accessed by other means in Moon or Sun. and i already beat both ultra moon and sun and still think is a rip off if you buy the first one

I say get the original if you really want to experience a story centered more on Lillie. They took out a lot of really cool heartfelt scenes in this one. I think this one was more about epic adventure and save the world while last game was more about helping Lillie and dealing with her mom's issues.

Im actually starting to enjoy the game. I wasn't really excited that they made you replay the adventure from sun and moon and make you feel new again but it's not crazy bad but I do want to continue more though and thanks for helping me regain my hype for the games
This shouldve been a sequel. Gamefreak calling it an “alternate universe” was just their lazy excuse to not put much effort into these games.

Sun moon doesn’t add much to the table, I enjoyed it, but I’d be much better to get ultra sun or moon.
Sun & Moon had a way better story, but Ultra had more content.
This video helped me make my decision, I am sold on this game. This is the last Pokemon game of the series on the Nintendo 3DS and I want to be there to train with all the other trainers on the planet and I will not miss out on this game. And, for the love of my Pokemon.
My advice is that you play the original Sun and Moon for the story, you play ultra Sun and ultra Moon for the nostalgia and team building.
As well as Team Rainbow Rocket.
