Plot Summary

This is pretty much Sam Elliot playing Sam Elliot again, this time with a better script than usual -- and that works for me, it's about time he was the lead in a feature.
Bruce Morgen yes, he's been the sidekick too often. whether it was with Tom Selleck or Patrick Swayze to name two. I'm glad Sam has top billing.
Don't forget Conagher, he was great in that, from a great book with the same name.
IMO it's never mattered. He's stolen every movie he's ever been in. When he's onscreen everyone else is just fum-fuh-ing around him.
@@clmclachlan -- He didn't steal any scenes in his stretch on "Justified," perhaps because the other actors are every bit as good as he is. Of course, he did his usual perfect job playing Sam Elliot. :-)
John Wayne always played John Wayne. Sam Elliot plays Sam Elliot. I’d watch both men play any role.

for those of you that don't know, Katherine Ross in this movie is Sam's "real" wife, they've been married since she did the Graduate with Dustin Hoffman. and then she kinda dropped out of acting and Sam actually started out as a 'Stuntman' then got into acting.
A lot of actors started as stuntmen - John Wayne, Kirk Douglas, Jackie Chan. Ain't nothin' wrong with that.

That's an excellent point, Michael. I hadn't thought about the fact that he has had few leading roles. Always an ensemble, or he's in a supporting role. I never saw Lifeguard, but that is the only film I can think of where he is the lead.
Lifeguard is a truly great movie because he is in it.

Are you really placing the expendables in the same league as Gettysburg sir. A key attribute to acting is presence on screen, Mr Elliot walks in and you take notice, Mr Stratham is a blink and you miss him type of actor, although, I do enjoy watching him when I turn my mind off.

I haven't been to a movie theater in 40yrs but I would see this movie. As stated Sam Elliot is an actor that the newer generations could learn from.This is a real man. I am an old guy but something about this trailer brings a lump in my throat. It brings back things I should have done, regrets and a life that I wish I could do over. Nothing bad just a different path in life. Sam is one of the last fine true actors we have left.Much respect for Sam. I hope you win an Oscar.
Every one of us who survives to a ripe old age experience EXACTLY what you described. Regrets and a wish for a do-over. Most of us, our generation at least had the good fortune to HAVE those in our youth with the knowledge to make our paths better than we made them. We didn't listen to them when it counted, just as today's youths don't listen to their elders. We're humans, and that is our downfall. Think we know it all when we know nothing and by the time we learn our bodies and minds have largely deserted us. We should be born old and grow younger, keeping the wisdom gained with old age.
One thing I have discovered as an older man is that if a younger woman likes you, don't question it.
The voice,the presence,the age...he is what we boomers want as our legacy. Age is truth,experience life,accept the loss and revel in the accomplishments.

My Dad graduated with Sam at David Douglas High School in Portland, Oregon, Class of 62. Thank God for this Man as about the only positive Entertainer to come out of Portland without baggage attached. Thanks Sam for being a stand up Actor. He's 73, btw. And looks better than my Dad, same age.

The older I get the more and more I appreciate the old guys-Elliot,Hopkins,Eastwood,Plummer,Connery, Hackman,Kristofferson, the late Sam Shepard...none of the younger actors as good as many of them are will have the presence or body of work. Maybe Christian Bale a couple others,but they got a helluva mountain to climb.
Sam Elliot's great in this role. I like pretty much all his work. Nice to see Laura Prepon in this. She plays a great supporting role. She is also an amazing beauty.
