This has always been my very favorite classical piece. I was amazed and delighted to discover this beautifully photographed live performance of Saint-Saens 4th piano concerto performed masterfully by Lorraine Min and conducted memorably by the fantastic Tania Miller. I just wish I had been there on that night. I have been asking the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra to present it for years. The first movement is stunning in its understatement and gentleness. In the second movement the recurring melodies found throughout the piece become bold and triumphant. I don’t care to argue about which of the five piano concertos by Saint-Saens is the masterpiece. I’m more interested in experiencing what touches the human heart. This is some beautiful and very memorable music. And what an ending.
It's a huge favorite for me too. First time I heard it played was by French pianist Philipp Entremont with the Philadelphia Orchestra as it was known then. I was blown away, it was a long time ago, no CZcams then.
Part of a performance of a tv program with an orchestra sponsored by Bell Labs was online a few years back (and might still be). The historical Entremont performances were energetic.
Paul Pizzo All 5 of Saint Saens piano concertos should be heard more often instead of the endless repeats of Beethoven's 5 concertos - there is so much great music out there that seldom gets a look in because organizers are stuck with an all too narrow outlook.
I do think Saint-Saens is underrated. He is often regarded as being a lightweight. No, the underlying structure is there, and the developing of themes is there. Perhaps, typically of French Romantic composes, this is not obvious, but both are there. Plus, there is the surface beauty which is rather obvious. I like all 5 of his piano concertos, but the 4th is my favorite.
They call the music of Saint Saens "Champagne Music". But this is not at all negative. - And the Adagio of the Organ Symphony is one of the most beautiful pieces in music history.

I fell in love with love with the two piano concertos. Later, when CDs came out, I purchased a two-CD set of Entremont playing all five of Saint-Saens' piano concertos and play them often while walking with my mp3 player. I must agree with other commenters that Concertos 1,3 and 5 are also great concertos. Saint-Saens is by far France's greatest classical composer and his music should be played much more in concert halls. His melodies are beautiful.
45 years later I still have dreams that the Columbia Record Club is going to come after me for unpaid bills for the 190 records I ordered for one penny.
Once it was possible to read the remark of a critic in, I believe, the New York Times... He said something like this: "Yesterday night we were privileged hearing in a concert a young, french pianist who could be classify by a single, plain word: a GENIOUS."
I grew up with that same recording by Entremont, which our family got from the Wordl Record Club some time in the 1960s. Like you I nearly wore the record out. I've always liked this no.4 better than no.2. When I was 17 the contrary motion octaves in the last movement were the most electrifying thing I had ever heard.
I had never thought of Saint-säens as a genius. This concert, however, had the power of making me reconsider my mind. It's a superb masterpiece. This perception has longed for decades. This is a concert basically based on a single theme. If such a commposer is not a genius, I don't know anymore what a genius is.
Personnaly I love Saint-Saens music too. But it is true that he was known as the " more genius composer inside the ungenius " or " the biggest composer inside the little one" !!!
Love this concerto... But everybody is talking about 1,2,4,5... Poeple, please take some time to listen the third, its a really stunning masterpiece, it has so unusual melodies, great epic and powerfuls moments... One of my favorite classical pieces of all time
At the top of my list of favorite piano concertos are all 5 of Saint-Saens works. They don't get any better than these. Others get as good, but not better.

The fourth pino concerto of Saint Saens is perhaps the most original of the five. I always perceived it as a vast elaboration of choral-llike themes. Lorraine Min, a pianist whom I did noy know, I must confess iy, is an extrordinary interpret of this rigorous concertto.
A musician who at the age of 8 played recitals in which people could call out for him to play one of the 32 Beethoven Sonatas, Camille Saint-Saens had an auspicious beginning to the music world. His music is always sane and beautiful. He is no Beethoven. He is just a magnificent composer and, in his day, a fantastic pianist. He is highly underrated as a composer and people need to recognize his depth of ability. His piano concertos are indeed underrated and they shouldn't be.
Every time I hear this magnificent concerto I question why it is not played more often in concert halls (at least where I live), other than it's fiendishly difficult for the pianist. Bravo Lorraine Min and the VS!

Once Ms. Min set the pace for the theme of the Allegro in the second movement, I knew we were in for it. Met the extreme challenge of this daunting composition with both grace and power. Bravo.

Revisando mis antiguos casettes ( ¡ Nunca tuve el valor de deshacerme de ellos ! )...Encontré esta maravilla de Saint-Saens. Después de escucharla en un equipo antiguo, decidí buscarlo en este medio...¡ Y estaba ! . El casette lo feché en 1994 ( hace 21 años al 2015 ) era interpretado por el gran Aldo Ciccolini quien acaba de fallecer en Febrero de este 2015 a los 89 años. Un homenaje tardío a este gran músico de origen italiano y se hizo ciudadano francés, nueva patria que le vió morir en Ansiéres-sur-Seine. Gran interpretación de dos mujeres .

Wow! Stunning performance from Ms. Min in one of the toughest concertos in the entire repertoire to coordinate with the orchestra. Tania Miller was with her every step of the way. I thoroughly enjoyed this and I have heard some abysmal performances of this concerto from men here on CZcams, proving once again that it often takes a woman to do a man's job. At the end Ms. Min kinda looks stunned, like she's thinking to herself, "We actually pulled it off." Which they did, in spades!

The No. 4 is my favorite of the Saint- Saens piano concertos. After listening to it on my car's CD (Phillipe Entremont), I put it into my computer at home and came up with Lorraine Min's simply masterful rendition of it. I was just mesmerized just as I am listening and watching it now. Oh, Ceil!

I have several recordings of this concerto, the oldest is with Alfred Cortot, another almost as old is with Alexander Brailowsky and this performance by Ms. Min is as excellent as those of the pianists of the past !
@@ricardomilanese515 Unfortunately. I loved Brailowski's playing. I always thought he was hugely underrated, never got the attention Rubinstein got even though he was the first to present ALL of Chopin's works in a series of recitals back in 1924, I believe it was.

The Saint-Saëns piano concertos used to be played in Brazil but I have never been to a concerto where this concerto was played live. In São Paulo it was just played once or twice many years ago.

Je découvre saint saens, et, notamment, les concertos pour piano, et , je suis stupéfait, qu un compositeur ayant composé de telles merveilles, ( j ai écouté les concertos 2 et 5 par Richter !!!) , n aie pas l exposition d un Mozart ou d un Beethoven, pour ne citer qu eux. Ce concerto ne sera peut être pas mon préféré, mais je reconnais l extraordinaire vivacité d esprit de ce compositeur, ainsi que le magnifique rendu de l interprétation, tant orchestrale que pianistique. The Saint-Saëns piano concertos used to be played in Brazil but I have never been to a concerto where this concerto was played live. In São Paulo it was just played once or twice many years ago.

Merveilleux !! Je découvre saint saens, et, notamment, les concertos pour piano, et , je suis stupéfait, qu un compositeur ayant composé de telles merveilles, ( j ai écouté les concertos 2 et 5 par Richter !!!) , n aie pas l exposition d un Mozart ou d un Beethoven, pour ne citer qu eux.
Ce concerto ne sera peut être pas mon préféré, mais je reconnais l extraordinaire vivacité d esprit de ce compositeur, ainsi que le magnifique rendu de l interprétation, tant orchestrale que pianistique.

beautiful Lorraine, Saint-Saens to the true classic listener is not unpopular as remarked below comments. this sounds similar to the Organ Concerto the accomplished listener and the composer is not underrated at all.
My favorite Saint Saens Piano Concertos are the 2 and the 4; the 5 is next, but 1 and 3 are cool too.
