Alexandroffsky Waltz - performed by Lorraine Min
In 1875, Baltimore railroad industrialist Tom Winans commissioned the Alexandroffsky Waltz from Russian composer P. Bihahc to honor his dying sister, Julia. She died before hearing it and it was never publicly performed until pianist Lorraine Min performed it as an encore in Baltimore on March 17, 2019.

Which Victoria Symphony? There must be a dozen places called Victoria which could possibly support an orchestra. Beginning with the state of Victoria in Australia, and Victoria in British Columbia. I'm not sure why the poster assumes we will know.

I wonder if Rachmaninoff got the idea concept for his opening of his 3rd piano concerto from the last movement of this Saint-Saens concerto???

This has always been my very favorite classical piece. I was amazed and delighted to discover this beautifully photographed live performance of Saint-Saens 4th piano concerto performed masterfully by Lorraine Min and conducted memorably by the fantastic Tania Miller. I just wish I had been there on that night. I have been asking the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra to present it for years. The first movement is stunning in its understatement and gentleness. In the second movement the recurring melodies found throughout the piece become bold and triumphant. I don’t care to argue about which of the five piano concertos by Saint-Saens is the masterpiece. I’m more interested in experiencing what touches the human heart. This is some beautiful and very memorable music. And what an ending.

It's a huge favorite for me too. First time I heard it played was by French pianist Philipp Entremont with the Philadelphia Orchestra as it was known then. I was blown away, it was a long time ago, no CZcams then.

Part of a performance of a tv program with an orchestra sponsored by Bell Labs was online a few years back (and might still be). The historical Entremont performances were energetic.

A stunning presentation of my favorite classical piece performed by virtuoso Lorraine Min and the Victoria Symphony audience. It has never been performed more beautifully and passionately than by Ms. Min and I’ve listened to Saint-Saen’s 4th piano concerto hundreds of times. What an accomplishment. Congratulations Lorraine Min! You brought tears to my eyes and gave me goosebumps.

Saint-Saens' music is very interesting; there is a lot to learn from him (as a music professor). Some people think he's superficial, but so what! He covered all the spectrum of classical music, and his works are very remarkable.

I am a great admirer of the music of Saint-Saens. I see that some have mentioned that Saint-Saens is to some extent underrated. I agree. The common reference to Saint-Saens as the "French Mendelssohn" doesn't help, as I think Mendelssohn is underrated as well. There was a dedicated and developing classical practice during the 19th century; and can be traced from Schubert through Mendelssohn and through Saint-Saens. Wonderful performance. The piece requires both a crispness of execution and full command of the tonal potential of the instrument. Mission accomplished.

Merveilleux !!

A musician who at the age of 8 played recitals in which people could call out for him to play one of the 32 Beethoven Sonatas, Camille Saint-Saens had an auspicious beginning to the music world. His music is always sane and beautiful. He is no Beethoven. He is just a magnificent composer and, in his day, a fantastic pianist. He is highly underrated as a composer and people need to recognize his depth of ability. His piano concertos are indeed underrated and they shouldn't be.

Saint Saëns five piano concertos have the signature of him as a post romantic very original composer. The order I love them according to its themes and melodic-harmonic development is: numbers 2 and 5 the greatest. No. 1, 3 and 4 the most composer style.
