When Željko Obradović gave us the GREATEST press conference in Basketball History (Eurobasket 2005)

- The year was 2005 and the Eurobasket championship, the biggest European competition for National Teams, which takes place every 4 years, was being held in Serbia.
A Serbian host team which was coming in with high expectations failed to not only win the Gold but even make it past the top 16 of the tournament crashing out to France and a young Tony Parker.
What followed after their elimination was an Obradović classic in the post game press conference. The man was so into it that the translator even had to stop trying to translate everything that the man was saying in a rant that lasted over 30 minutes (edited down in this video for your convenience).
In the press conference Zeljko talked about the levels of dysfunction that he had to deal with starting all the way from the recruiting stage describing a ride which was inevitably destined to crash.
In my years of watching basketball , maybe even pro sports in general , i haven't seen a press conference similar to this. The man purred his heart and soul into this and it showed. - Sport

You wouldn't even imagine how rich and powerful of a language it is. This, expressive as it is, still makes for a toned down version of what was ACTUALLY on this man's mind, if he was speaking in private as opposed to public, it would be way more fired up with a swear or two every now and then, which trust me, would add so much more to it in terms of painting his frustration and anger over the whole context and the situation he's been in (natives know) 😅

As a basketball fan and an aspiring basketball coach Zeljko Obradovic is the kind of coach I would like to be. Uncompromising and committed to the unity and performance of the team. Part of humility is understanding there is always something new you can learn and this certainly applies to basketball. As an American, I think there is a lot we can learn from the Serbian basketball school and the Serbian basketball philosophy and training methods, especially when it comes to positionless basketball and "Total Basketball" with an emphasis on passing skills, improvization and team cohesion and disciplined defense. The results of Serbian basketball players speak for themselves and im certain they will be copied and incorporated by other countries in the future. Go to Serbia to get a PhD in 🇷🇸 🏀

Great coach, but greater as a human person. His only problem is that when players make him mad, his face goes purple. Generally speaking the greater European coaches are more life coaches that is why they are better tacticians in the court.

Obradovich is a rare mix of insane intelect, honesty, humility and agressivness. All packed into one. Agressive and intelligent is a dangerous combo.
Lots of people are either intelligent but not agressive and vice versa.
Also he is very honest about everything which makes him not having any backroom chats in his head. He is heads on 5th gear into greatness.
Human beings like him arent born everyday. We are witnessing greatness.

Serbian team really suffers from these problems even now. Micic was awfully selfish in that loss against Italy, they all defended poorly and the whole team pretended that Jokic wasn't an NBA MVP.
Yup, I would not be surprised if situation was somewhat similar as 2005.
There is one big difference tough. I feel like the coach also had ego here, not just some players. He wanted to prove that team is not just Jokic and made Jokic submit to the team instead of leading it. When I look at Denver, Jokic is playmaker there, holding the ball and creating the plays. In Serbia he was put in the roll of the big slow post-up center in the basketball concept from 80s.
There were some other weird decisions like keeping Marinkovic so long out of the game, as well as not trying to defend with small ball (which with did against Finland with MJK) and insisting on Milutinov...
That loss against Italy was one of the most disappointing moments in out recent basketball history, but it was not even similar to what we witnessed in 2005, in 2022 we had 1 bad game, no, 1 bad half only, before that 2nd half we played amazing, and it was one of the best and the most enjoyable teams I have ever seen.

@@manfakir5640 Jarić, Rakočević, maybe Miličić, but definitely not Bodiroga, who was one of his favorite players. He coached him in the national team since 1995, as well as in Real Madrid in 1996/97 and in Panathinaikos between 1999 and 2002.

@@manfakir5640 Jaric, Rakocevic and Radmanovic were the ones hating each other and so. Also, Scepanovic and Avdalovic (they were among the ones going out till 5 AM) and then we had another two troublesome guys Gurovic and Milicic.

Naravno, ego nije problem samo u Srba, ali je kod vas dominantan problem. Samo pogledaj srbsku fudbalsku reprezentaciju, a fudbaleri su najveci egoisti shodno IQ-u, valjda je to proporcionalno :)!

Ovako i Vahid Halilhodzic, svi ga zovu da vodi Bosnu a on ziv nece. A kad vidim gospodina Obradovica, onda razumijem sto nece.
Neće ljudi da kaljaju obraz. Sa nacionalnim timovima. Znaju oni dobro koja banda tamo sedi i diriguje.Ovo važi sa sve reprezentacije sa Ex-yu prostora.
Postoji i problem koji ovde nije pomenut, a to su menadzeri. Djordjevic je imao nenormalno problema sa njima, a Pesic ove godine jos gori. Pa su Guduric i Milutinov morali da igraju odredjen broj minuta (10-15) protiv Italije, bez obzira sto su nas zahvaljujuci njima ubili. Moguce je da je i Pesic izlapeo, ali nekako vise verujem da su menadzeri krivi za to.
A sto je najgore ovo sto Zeljko pominje je i dalje aktuelno, na primer relacija Micic - Jokic.
Ima i u Bosni slicnih problema, igraci koji su potpuno odtranjeni iz glavne grupe zbog nacionalnosti. Hrvatska vec godinama sigurno ima isti problem, ja ne vidim drugo objasnjenje zbog cega drugo igraju ovako lose. U Sloveniji je isto katastrofa, mozda ne toliko izmedju igraca, ali trenera niko ne slusa...
@@XelNaga89 Slazem se da su i menadzeri tj. Agenti veliki faktor. A nacionalnost u Bosni ne znam da je ikad bila toliki problem da je neko odstranjen iz ekipe zbog toga. Svaka reprezentacija nasa je donekle izmijesana. Ja vjerujem da je nacionalnost veci problem kod Srba i Hrvata nego kod nas.
