    As it turns out, the auto-choke isn't a choke at all. That is, it doesn't choke airflow through the carburetor like you
    would find on a lawnmower or generator type of engine. Instead, it sends extra fuel through the carburetor. This is
    called an enrichment circuit.
    This circuit is controlled by the charging system. When your engine is off, the choke (enrichment circuit) is actually
    "on" in it's default resting state. When the engine is turned on and voltage is applied to the choke, the needle
    extends and eventually plugs the enrichment ports within the carburetor. This happens within a couple of minutes
    as the engine warms up.
    What we usually see with a bad auto-choke is that the engine will start up and run great cold, but as the engine
    warms up there will be problems driving, starting, and/or idling.
    To test your auto-choke:
    1. Remove choke assembly from the choke holder on the side of the carb. The needle should be clearly visable.
    2. Measure the overall length of the choke from end-to-end, including the very tip of the needle.
    3. Now connect the choke's electrical leads to a 12v power source. Black is negative.
    4. Wait 5-10 minutes and re-measure. The needle should have extended.
    5. The overall length should be approximately 3mm (3/16") more than before.

    Probably the best explanation on the "bystarter enricher" I've seen so far !!!
    I am having issues with the fast idle not working on an old Honda scooter, enricher works perfect, O-ring gasket is there but the enrichment of fuel isn't there when you first start it.
    I tried putting a flat plate with gasket in its place to temporarily eliminate it to see if the fast idle works, but even so, the idle at start up is normal run idle like when it's warm up, not the higher idle like it should be.
    The fuel channel leading to the enricher from the carburetor bowl must be plugged OR the channel from the enricher to the intake manifold side of the carburetor is plugged.
    Need to check this out one day ... Great video

    Ok, So I've a 2020 Taotao pony 49cc.
    I've recently been tweaking the carb abit to just get a little better performance tune.Mine is running fine.I've raised the needle some to have it abit richer.I've also adjusted the idle screw adjustment on the throttle cable to carb.Great results so far.Soon planning on drilling out the brass adjustment also to fine tune abit more. (All stock still as of now)
    But, thinking of doing the needle change & abit bigger jet.The video you had done on this.Yes, I seen your video allready of that to.But, you didn't get into much on the poilet jet really.... I want great easy start, great idle, But, at the same time great response in my throttle to. Goal is great top end speed as well.110% perfect. I want everything thing dialed into profection.
    I know these things can perform way better basically stock with just a few simple parts in the carb.Then straight from the factory.Thanks so much for taking the time & effort to make all these videos.I'm a gear head watching you also. 🛵🔧👍

    Hi Virberello,
    I liked your video, hope this evening i will do all the checks on my carburator. Otherwise if i may give a tip to everybody for the check of the needle
    (the needle of the automatic starter = the richer system), you can wrap nicely the needle with scotch tape before doing the electric test.
    And after the 3 , 4 min time needed to push out the needle, you should see some part of it not wrapped by the tape coming out. Which prooved that you needle has moved out and you can also physically measure it.
    :-))
    bye bro, keep helping us!

    Hi, great video & very clear on the workings of these carbs, so this is probably a stupid question;
    My enricher needle, and the cylinder part seem to both stick out when I check it. I can push the cylinder in (compressing the spring), and I can then also push in the needle.
    I assume this means my enricher is faulty?
    Just fitted a new 100cc gy6 qmb139 engine after blowing up the 50cc, but I can’t get it to start. Carb removed & spraying easy-start into the manifold will make it fire, but it won’t with carb on. Carb seems clean, and bowl full of fuel.
    Would this faulty enricher stop it starting?

    Can these chokes be stuck in an extended state, resulting in a too low idle upon cold start (engine shutting down)?
    Cause my mother her scooter drives fine warm, but doesn't stay running when cold. Increasing main engine idle screw for more idle revs would result in an engine that wants to engage the vario clutch. 😕

    • @VirberelloScooterTips
      @VirberelloScooterTips  Před rokem

      Yes, it is possible for the electric choke enricher on your gas scooter to get stuck in an extended state, which can cause a too low idle upon cold start and result in the engine shutting down.
      The electric choke enricher is responsible for providing a richer fuel mixture to the engine when it's cold, which helps with starting and idling. If the choke is stuck in an extended position, the engine will receive an overly rich fuel mixture, causing it to idle too low and potentially stall when cold.
      As for your mother's scooter driving fine when warm but not staying running when cold, this behavior is consistent with a malfunctioning choke. When the engine is warm, it requires less enrichment, so the stuck choke doesn't have as significant an impact on performance. However, when the engine is cold, it relies on the choke to provide the extra fuel needed for smooth operation.
      Simply adjusting the main engine idle screw to increase idle revs may not solve the issue if the choke is the root cause. Doing so might indeed result in the engine wanting to engage the variator clutch at higher RPMs, but the scooter will still have trouble idling and starting when cold.
      To fix this problem, you should have the scooter inspected by a qualified mechanic. They will be able to diagnose whether the electric choke is stuck or faulty and then either repair or replace it as necessary. It's essential to ensure that the choke system is working correctly for reliable cold starts and smooth idling.

      @@VirberelloScooterTips Installed a new choke, it was only 10 euro thus worth a gamble, and now the scooter functions perfectly again.
      It seems that the wire got squeezed at a certain point under the cover, which simply destroyed it. It only had 4 ohm resistance while the new one had 20 ohm.
      Now the scooter starts cold with a short touch of a button and absolutely no added throttle.
      So it all works like new again. Thanks for the help and explanations.
      By the way, have a quality battery in a scooter helps a lot too for starting it. I used to use lead-acid batteries that were 12V 5Ah and 60A cold start cranking capacity, but now I have a gel battery with 12V 5Ah and 100A cold start cranking capacity (Accurat YTX5L-BS battery). The GY6 engine just loves a bit more power to get that bendix starter gear moving and crank the engine over. The 60A batteries were having a too hard a time with it, which destroyed the batteries as you draw a lot of current all at once. Basically deep cycling the battery, and that's never good for them.
      So if you can get a 12V 5Ah 100A gel battery in your area, then it is worth the investment. Just a little tip as thanks, if you didn't know it already that is.

      @@LogiForce86 Congratulations on successfully installing a new choke in your scooter! It's great to hear that it resolved the issue and that your scooter is functioning perfectly again.
      The difference in resistance between the old wire (4 ohms) and the new one (20 ohms) likely caused the problem. The squeezed wire under the cover could have caused a short circuit or a disruption in the proper functioning of the choke.
      Your advice about using a quality battery in a scooter is valuable. Upgrading from a lead-acid battery to a gel battery with higher cold start cranking capacity (100A) seems to have made a significant difference in starting performance. The GY6 engine in your scooter benefits from the additional power to engage the bendix starter gear and crank the engine effectively. It's true that lead-acid batteries can suffer from deep cycling when subjected to heavy currents, which can degrade their overall performance and lifespan.
      The Accurat YTX5L-BS gel battery you mentioned appears to be a good investment, as it provides both the necessary voltage (12V) and cold start cranking capacity (100A) to meet the demands of your scooter's engine.
      Thank you for sharing your experience and offering this helpful tip to others who might be facing similar issues with their scooters. Upgrading to a higher-capacity gel battery could be a worthwhile investment to ensure smooth and reliable starts. I have a question i noticed my enricher is still drawing power even after the scooter is off. Why is it doing that??? Its draining the battery dead after a couple days.

    • @VirberelloScooterTips
      @VirberelloScooterTips  Před 9 měsíci +1

      If the enricher (choke) on your scooter is still drawing power even when the scooter is turned off, it's likely due to an electrical issue that needs to be addressed. Here are some possible reasons for this problem:
      Faulty Ignition Switch: The ignition switch may not be cutting off power to all electrical components properly when the scooter is turned off. This could cause various electrical components, including the enricher, to continue drawing power.
      Wiring Issue: There may be a short circuit or a wiring problem in the electrical system that is keeping power flowing to the enricher even when the scooter is off.
      Aftermarket Modifications: If any aftermarket modifications have been made to the scooter's electrical system, they could be causing the issue. Non-standard wiring or components may not function as expected.
      To resolve this problem and prevent your battery from draining, you should consider the following steps:
      Inspect the Choke Mechanism: Check the choke to ensure it's operating correctly and returning to the closed position when the scooter is turned off. Adjust or repair it as necessary.
      Check the Ignition Switch: Verify that the ignition switch is functioning properly. It should cut power to all electrical components when the scooter is off. If it's faulty, consider replacing it.
      Examine the Wiring: Inspect the wiring for any visible damage or loose connections. A thorough examination of the electrical system may reveal the source of the problem.
      If you're unsure about how to address these problems or if you can't identify the source of the issue, it's advisable to consult a qualified scooter mechanic or an electrician with experience in electrical systems to diagnose and fix the problem. Continuing to operate the scooter with this issue could lead to a drained battery and other electrical problems.

      @VirberelloScooterTips  Před 4 měsíci +1

      If you're experiencing issues with your scooter's idle and throttle after reinstalling the choke, it's likely that the choke isn't installed correctly or is not adjusted properly. Here's a step-by-step guide to reinstalling and adjusting the choke on your scooter:
      Remove the Choke: Start by removing the choke from your scooter. Make sure to note how it was originally installed so you can reassemble it correctly.
      Inspect the Choke: Check the choke for any signs of damage or wear. If it's damaged, it may need to be replaced.
      Clean the Choke: If the choke appears dirty or clogged, clean it to ensure proper functioning.
      Reinstall the Choke: Carefully reinstall the choke into its original position on the scooter. Make sure all connections are secure and tightened properly.
      Check Idle and Throttle: After reinstalling and adjusting the choke, start the scooter and allow it to idle. Monitor the idle speed to ensure it's stable and at the correct RPM. Additionally, test the throttle to make sure it responds smoothly and without any hesitation.
      Make sure when you reinstall the enricher you have the rubber gasket around the choke because sometime the brake easily and if it brake air will go inside
      Consult a Professional: If you're still experiencing issues after following these steps, it may be best to consult a professional mechanic or technician who has experience with scooter engines. They can diagnose any underlying problems and make the necessary repairs or adjustments.
      By following these steps, you should be able to reinstall and adjust the choke on your scooter correctly, restoring normal idle and throttle operation.
