  • Wes shares an extraordinary inside look at The Styles Collection, one of the world’s most impressive car collections featuring incredible American muscle cars, including some of the rarest Shelbys that have ever existed - like #0139 the ONLY ‘67 GT500 CONVERTIBLE ever built. Owner, Brian Styles, explains the extensive research he does to verify the rarity of each of these amazing vehicles. But what Brian really needs is the help of our muscle car fans in his investigation into the history of a truly unique Shelby: a 1967 GT500 built on the very last production day at the factory in San Jose. What makes this car so rare is its color - black! Bryan is desperate to find out the full history of this car and he has a few clues to share that may help us help him solve the mystery!

My family bought a new 1967 GT 500 from Bill Watkins Ford in Scottsdale Arizona. It had outboard headlights. It was Presidential Blue with a white interior. It had a single four barrel carb on a "sidewinder" intake. We bought it in February of 1968. We were told that it was some sort of a Shelby Factory car with experimental stuff on it. It may have had a Cobra Jet engine. My father (who bought CSX 2210 Cobra new in Louisville, Kentucky) put a Detroit Locker in the differential in the GT-500 (it came without positraction I think) He also put traction bars on it. It had an automatic C-6 transmission. I still have some of the paper work for the original purpose as well as the serial number. We were told that there were only 6 made with the Dark Blue paint and the "white" parchment interior. I have slides (photos) of it in the attic I think. We sold it approximately one year later in February of 1968 I believe. We sold it because I was 16 with excessive testosterone and no brain because my father was concerned that I might kill myself in it. I did use it to take my drivers license test at 16. We also took it to the Trans-Am race in Castle Rock, Colorado. The Shelby Team semi honked when we went by it on the way to the track. I helped unload the Mark Donahue Camaro and talked to Dan Gurney, Mark Donahue, Peter Revlon. That was a thrill I'll never forget.

Would love to help you ID your dad's old car, however, Nightmist Blue + Parchment + Outboards (late-built car) would be a near-impossible combination. Bill Watkins was known as Paradise Ford in 1967. Of the 30x '67 GTs they sold, the only one with a Parchment interior was painted white. They did sell 2x Nightmist GT500s, one with a 4-speed and one with an automatic, however, both had black trim (and both were completed late enough to have the 'outboard' high beams). You can reach me at the 1967 Shelby Research Group if you want additional help in IDing the car.

Back in 1971 I saw a BLACK 1967 GT500 at a Drive-In food joint in Spartanburg, SC! I had just moved to Spartanburg in 1970 and was a huge Ford fan! A white guy in his mid to late twenties (same age as I was) was resting on the front fender and I told him "I love your car man!". He replied; "Thanks"! Was this the missing car of this video? It was GORGEOUS!

I bet so many Shelbys have had their ‘slimer’ color changed to re-paint red or black…

25% of the '67 Shelby GTs left the factory painted Lime Gold, and yes, many had their color changed by subsequent owners (commonly to red, white, or black).

I thought this was about lost cars, not a millionaire collector looking for providence on a car he's having restored.
