  • Doncaster comes to a close with its biggest video. Yes, even though Hatfield was a monster at 33 minutes, somehow this one has managed not only to top it by four minutes, but rather inexplicably, it's also left some stuff out! I know it as, because there are things I'm pretty sure people will tell me I've missed, and some of them just couldn't make it into the video!
What I have covered though is as much of this town as I could possibly fit into a near forty minute video which takes you on a tour around some fabulous old buildings and some new developments which have sprung up in place of those that have been demolished or repurposed. In this town, you're not short of a religious building, or a school, or in fact a large ark with a miniature railway!
The main street through the town is the only pedestrianised main street in the parished part of Doncaster (yes, I know Mexborough is pedestrianised, but a parish it is not), there's a lock and a marina, two train stations, a water tower, an extensive churchyard and a cemetery, and did I mention that's just the main settlement? There's also a smaller village to the North which is the site of the former colliery which is now a solar farm, and in itself that place has more than enough history to fill forty minutes on its own.
So settle back, and enjoy the last video in a district that's so very varied, from the mines or Edlington and Rossington to the lush greenery of the likes of Clayton and Frickley, or the medieval history behind Tickhill and the farm orientated parishes of Moss, Thorpe in Balne and Kirk Bramwith.
Thank you everyone in all 43 parishes of Doncaster, I have enjoyed them all, and I hope you have too. Here's the one remaining Doncaster video and the district is now complete. This is THORNE.

My Mother was born in Thorne in 1918, but I have never been there. My Great Grandfather, I was told, built the Lady Chapel in Thorne. One day I should visit the town.

Just to let you know, the pump in Thorne Market Place is a Crimean War Pump and was used to water the horses as there was originally a water trough as well. There is a community woodland next to the Delves in Thorne and a Community woodland in Moorends as well. There is also a small Catholic church in moorends.

The building cross from the church grounds that is now flats used to be the old grammar school, I believe that building is listed and as a result was turned into flats rather than being demolished with the rest of the school

Across the road from the windmill was Thorne Secondary School for Boys. Now demolished to make way for houses. The English teacher when I was a pupil was Roy Clarke, the creator of the TV series Last of the Summer Wine.
