- More than 25,000 lamplighters used to roam the streets of London, lighting up the streets of the capital, now there are just five.
Their job is a unique one and still very relevant today.
Ahead of the coronation of King Charles, the remaining lamplighters had a special task, to turn one lamp into a shining jewel in its own right.

Some of my earliest memories growing up in the 1950's were watching the gas lamp being lit in the lane, opposite where I was born. Really quite magical. Thanks for sharing.
Lamp should be left with the crown and gold a new king a fresh look of a new history
Nah.
Yeah, it's sad it can't be kept.
Oh! As a child, i read a story about a gas lighter in London. So wonderful to hear about them now. I am still fascinated.
This was absolutely wonderful! I knew the smog was dreadful but it never occurred to me that it was So bad that people couldn't see At all as it were. What a fantastic educational video ❤️😊
He made the nights a little lighter, wherever he did go,
The old lamplighter of long long ago.
Just beautiful ~ thank you all ~ Best Louise
So glad the 5 remaining gas lamp lighters were able to make a contribution to the coronation. What an incredible history that's soon to be extinguished.
History always fascinated me but isn't that sad ☹️
I think the British government should allow this custom to continue, not end it.
@@SS33333 When the water companies were privatised, they all sacked the men that wandered around the hillside, and cleared out the culverts. It could be done more "efficiently" with a tractor and hydraulic powered brush.
Only it does not work, it clears the culvert but these old guys were doing something besides cos the heavy rain just overtops the culvert and causes erosion.
By the time it became a problem all the old guys had died and there are now lots of trials underway to find out what the guys did that slowed the rain on the hillside to give it time to get into the culverts and into the reservoir.
This is whats causing all the "droughts" when we have lots of rain
We should never let trades and knowledge die...
It's not soon to be extinguished. All the remaining lamps are kept as gas in that part of central London.
This is a wonderful and interesting part of history, especially important for younger people to learn about.
Amazing to see Bruce Willis start this new line of work.
What an absolutely beautiful profession...& elegant looking too! Interesting short documentary. I really enjoyed this, thank you. 😊
Background music is far too loud and distracting.
Thank you. What a heartwarming episode.
Lovely!
Fascinating subject
GOD SAVE THE KING.
LONG LIVE THE KING.
Good on you mate
What beautiful elegant lamps the light is soft & gorgeous unlike the horrible harsh streetlights we have today that are not good for anyone.
Wonderful, magical. 🙏
I remember when electric lighting was introduced to the residential streets of Edinburgh in the late 1950's, the soft greenish glow of the gas lamps was replaced by a bright yellow glare from what I understood to be "sodium lamps" which were painful to look at directly. Those were replaced in their turn.
gas lamps look beautiful at the night time😍👍🏻
Love British history what a country with amazing history 🇬🇧👍
Keep up the Good work !
When Elizabeth 2 was coroneted there was a heavy rain too. Just interesting fact)
It's meant to be good luck for Coronations to be wet!
“And then the lighting of the lamps” TS Eliot
Leerie is the name given to someone who does this job
NICE
this is a fantastic trip back in time ...how far we have travelled its wonderful to see all these specialist roles performed by working people ,,,when everthing required a man or womans labour to get things done
I like london which before 100 year at that time.
May i can see that,s time,s london ?
Keep this old tradition going for years to come
Let there be light.

We still have gas lights in New Orleans. But they get turned on with a little clicker thing lol
Classic an beautiful
I'm just thinking about Lin Manuel Miranda's song about Lamplighters in Mary Poppins Returns
Doesn't seem that authentic when you walk up to a bloke lighting the lamp and realizing he has a British gas jumper on 😂😂
what action packed reporting!
Cool 😊
Save our historical London gas lamps!
Cool. This would be a fun job.❤😊
Good except for the very annoying snapping of fingers at the beginning.
I didn't know there where any gas lamps left in london. Is there a map of them all ?
Have the bulbs been modernised over the years.
What a pity to repaint that gold leaf to black just bc Q Victoria was obsessed with mourning, why not call it over and not waste the gilding on rather dreary sentimentality?
Future Kingdom of Great Britain & Northern Ireland.
London is so rich in history it's ridiculous
Now I know what happened to the shaman Naboo.
Lamplighter: "My occupation is to gaslight the whole country...just not on social media."
Sherlock Holmes vibes
Meu sonho morar em londres, se eu fosse trabalhar com isso iria amar ❤
Anyone know the music used in the background?!
ask your phone, "what song is this"
Unfortunately Shazam apo doesn't recognise anything, and this video description has no references, so I can't tell you. Sorry.
Some of the music was from Vivaldi's 'Four Seasons'
Irish fiddles n reels
Lol his job is to turn the light on hahaha I do that every day but me after I go do my REAL job
Sitting on a chair and working for a corporation for 8 hrs a day? while that dude is walking rounds in an open city and not inside a depressing building? wow
Go read a book
Show us the free electricity lamps from the 1800’s
Great memories 😀😂😅
Gas lamps are still going in London say about 5 are ther today are ther any still going to round UK
What an absolute waste of money to gold leaf it, then a few days later, redo it to black. Blatant disregard for all the people struggling to make ends meet and then along comes Charlie spending lavishly.
Wow, its like yall suddenly care for the poor again, then go silent for years again until someone you hate spends more money than you
Isn't it British Gas that was paying to gild the gas lamps? Not the king, government or taxpayer.
@@faithlesshound5621 If that is the case, do they not get their profits from Mr & Mrs Joe Ordinary?
Multi nationals are reporting record profits!
If I was given a choice to get a reduction at the pump or meter or make something pretty for a man who has a personal butt wiper.
I would have chosen, at the pump!
They did 1 not all of them
@@jeffreymortimer-zf1jr thanks for that note I corrected my rant.
I’m wondering why the crown is a Scottish crown.
an interesting piece of history, but today it's a huge waste of human labor.
Not really huge is it, only 5 old blokes.
Looter of the World

So why has BBC not uploaded the performance done by #Nigerian artist, Tiwa Savage, at the king charles 111 coronation? Is it too foreign to BBC's preferences and policy guidelines?
I wonder when the Brits will travel back to the 21st century 😅
