Wouldn't a heron statue be more detrimental? If it's in eyesight of any fish the fish will be accustomed to it and not deem it a threat so when a real heron appears they won't be scared of it. Just a thought...

You have such a beautiful pond! Such an impressive water feature. Thank you so much for posting these tips. I'm still fighting the losing battle with herons. This morning around 4 am a heron came and ate several fish. He got through the net, pulled it around, dislodged the pump tube and by 8 am the pond had been almost pumped dry.

Just wanted to thank you for the fishing line idea. My pond is 14 by 10 around 2500 gal. I have several 20 koi and numerous gold fish. I have the eye, Owl decoy and water jet. All failed. Did the fishing line and so far 4 weeks so good.

The best method is to cover your pond with a sun shade canopy as it renders it invisible to birds flying from above. However you have a monster pond where a sun shade canopy doesn't look employable; but I enjoyed seeing the clever tricks you came up with.

This is fabulous! We lost ALL our fish - and got some great pictures of the GBH thief! I made 1/8" copper wire supports for four fishing lines to be strong around our little pond. I will simply use a needle nose plier to make small loops. Thank you SO MUCH for the great idea.

+Robert Dopp I will be posting a new video in the real near future that will depict an almost fail proof way to protect you fish from predators.

    Hi from England. Lovely pond.
Pity no one has come out with a herring that moves it's head & wings.

Your pond is very nice , I love the waterfalls. However as to the decoy and scarecrow. A total waste of money. Decoys even moved around won’t work They will actually attract heron during mating season. Second they will condition your Koi to not be afraid of a real one. My advice if you want to risk using a scarecrow put several of them around. Costly and work to set up but one alone will offer little defense. Found this out the hard way. Netting seems to be the only sure answer. Like you mentioned it does need to be high. I find having it domed is best. AND tight. I hate seeing it but where mine is I really need the leaf protection in the fall anyway so why not just suffer with it all year. Hope this helps any of you.

I just love your pond! I always used crane decoys and it worked for me but you had a stubborn one :) Working on new pond at new house now. Like your solution with fishing line...

P.S. If you use fishing line please make sure it is secure. A Heron that came to my pond had fishing line all caught around its beak!! I don’t like the bird coming around but seeing it with a beak it could hardly open was tragic to me. He/she looked emancipated…..we all need to eat! Please be thoughtful with your fishing line.

May be moving to a home with a Koi pond. Never had a pond before. We have 4 cats and 2 catch birds and gecko's all the time. So, I'm concerned about ways to keep them out of a pond. I'll probably try all your gadgets and ideas! Your pond and waterfalls are beautiful!

+Sparkle by Monica I'd suggest an electric pet fence around the pond. They are faily inexpensive and easy to install. They work great for cats, dogs, racoons, etc.

+brian's ponds lol. This comment was over a year ago. We've since now been living at the house with the koi pond. Lots of issues with algae, but so far none of the feared issues with cats. lol. We did put some natural river rock stones as a perimeter to add height so cats couldn't lay and catch them, however, that's not even been an issue. Made the pond look prettier though. lol. We do have some small birds that come to catch minnows, however, the minnows seem to replenish themselves. lol. The algae issue has finally been fixed because my husband just built a large filtration system. So....now the issue seems to be that it is sucking up the dirt that our pond plants were mucked in. lol. Well, we do have a leak in the waterfall, as we have to refill it about 1 1/2 each 2-3 days after water loss. Will work on those now. Who knew a pond was such a learning experience? lol. Thanks.

Seems to work.......Herons have all the time in the world though , and after a day or two observing they might decide it's safe to land on one of those croc heads.......Unless you decide to fit them with a motion sensor which makes them move.....

  • @high_fructose_corn_syrup

Did u build your pond yourself? I want to make one but am so overwhelmed at all there is to learn! And i didnt realize the price to do this!

    • @brnbjames001
      @brnbjames001  Před 8 lety +1

+Vyshous Dolany probably not since hawks fly over pond and swoop down grabbing fish close to surface of pond. You would probably need a net to stop hawks.

I'm of the same mindeset, not only that but nets and fishing lines are killing the aesthetic of what you paid tens of thousands of dollars for. Not to mention tripping hazards for 2 legged creatures.
