I won't waffle too long about all my thoughts and how and why I've protected my pond how I have (here's my vid tho: czcams.com/video/D9KPPnjtXLk/video.html ), basically I use a fence right at edge of the pond, to stop them getting in a position to hunt, won't be to everyone's tastes or work with every pond/herons. But I will just hsare my immediate thoughts just after watching your video.
Firstly, there's no ethical way of scaring a heron off permenantly, and probably not unethical ones either, being wild animals they will inevitably take risks to find food, and us shouty humans aren't that scary. The heron in your video had a pretty large motivation as it had already got some fry, so as far as it was concerned it was well worth it to keep on coming back. Part of a heron's hunting process is to land nearby and check out both how to get the fish, and if there are any risk factors, so its plan was to just repeat the first stage of hunting until you weren't around.
Secondly, once you feel you have a pretty good prevention system, I wouldn't even try to scare them off initially. I'd watch them right up until the point you think they're about to defeat you system. This will do three things, one, show you were the weakness is if there is one, two, show you how this particular heron problem-solves (basically there's no system, including electronic shock cables that haven't been beaten by one heron somewhere in the world, but some herons are better than others at working it out, and three, if you don't have to scare it off and it can't find a way to get the fish that's the best deterrent of them all. It will keep coming back, but eventually will have to give up. My system has defeated my local herons, and although I see them occassionally on houses nearby (once or twice a year) and flying high overhead (like you I'm on a flight path) I haven't had one come anywhere near my pond or even in my garden for about 2 years (that I know, obvs)
Thirdly, herons do hunt in the dark, especially just before day break.
Finally, have you had a heron land on your main pond's net? Although birds;s tend to be light for their size, like you say, herons are big old animals, I'd guess if one did it'd pull the net down, especially near the cross beams or edges of the pond. I think they weigh a max of 2.5kg, so it mgiht be worth putting something of that weight on different parts of the net and seeing how low it stretches/gives?

Put a thin metal wire around the pond on poles about 18ins high as near to the edge as possible, apparently they won’t step over it to enter the water. It has worked for me. 🤞

Sorry about the heron problem Jamie, I too have a regular heron visitor, I live a few hundred yards from a reservoir and nature reserve, as well as the Thames, so there are lots of them near to me, so I have just been sorting out my main pond protection, near to being complete today, I think the only way to have peace of mind is to build something permanent, so I have now built screening at about 1.5M high and streched a net over it, just got to do the netted curtain now on the main viewing side, good luck with sorting your heron, best wishes, Tony😀

  • @edlesboroughkoipondstevech3546

Hi Jamie, I’ve had one visit last week. A Kerry Blue is a reasonable deterrent but he’s not always in the garden. So £250 ish on a Velda laser guard, a reflective floating ball, a rather nice looking decoy and one the things that shoots a jet of water which is not yet installed. The Laser Guard is top technology, strobes a white LED, barks and squawks, fires a green laser which looks like a disco ball. The only downer is it doesn’t appear that you can adjust the range which means my flag iris’s on a windy day set it off barking and squawking so I have had to turn the audible off. If I ever decide the only option is to net my pond then I will shut it down as the pond is part of the garden rather than a pond for koi and netting would spoil the look of the garden. I have uploaded a short video

    evening Jamie
you can buy the Velda Laser Guard Heron Deterrent but at almost £200 it's a lot of money, there might be other cheaper options than this but for now, the wood and odd bits you have used should do the trick.
I can almost be certain he will be back at first light, all the best mate

Hi, I bought one of these superb technology apart from it doesn’t appear that you can adjust the range, I’m not sure how many people have 12 metres to protect. I have had to turn the audible off as my flag iris moves in the wind and starts it off squawking and barking pissing everyone off. Have uploaded a short video🤓

I can feel your pain & exasperation at that persistent little ba$T@rd!! 😢
I agree with you, a net is the best solution. I love the idea that Jill & John at Wayside Koi have with their decking pond (think I’ll do same with my new koi pond build). Has a roof on it and they stretch screen netting across all 4 sides on cords. They can open them from hooks if need to do maintenance etc and then securely closes it up. I have herons fly overhead too so a constant worry! But so far the raised netting currently does the trick and I haven’t lost anything …. Knock on wood! Hope he just buggers off!! 😊🤗
