"Trickin Pickin" performed by Doug Waterman
" Give me five minutes I can teach a monkey to weld," no not always so, I recall many years ago. I had to oversee a big project where we had massive amount of railing to get welded up. so I had to train an old man who was a stick welder for thirty years how to use a mig welder. Pour guy just couldn't get it, yet his stick welds were perfect in any position but for the life of him he couldn't grasp welding with a mig. It baffled me why he just couldn't seem to grasp it but fact was he just couldn't. It was one of life's mysteries.
Think the old guy just didn't feel like it?
Weird, mig welding is so much easier than stick. Vertical up, vertical down, all so easy with mig.
Sure it's not just jog mode? The old Lincoln suitcase I used daily pre-dated the safety stuff, but it still shut gas flow off after a few seconds of running with no contact to ground, but it would still feed wire. But, it also had a gas purge button on the rear for setting flow rate at the gun.
Many years ago I listened to Earl Nightengale's daily spot on the radio. Always loved his voice and the wisdom that he imparted. Have a great week Doug.
Very sensible methodical trouble shooting. Great job finding the dirt. Main issue we have with them having to replace the contactors about once a year.
I didn’t know much about welding a few years ago. I could burn a stick if it didn’t require being attractive or effective. But then I had to rebuild the bed on my old dump truck. So I got a small flux core. That taught me a lot, like how much I wanted a real gas welder. So now I have a nice mig set-up, still have the flux core, a buzz box, and a set of tanks. What I enjoyed most about this video is that I now fully understand all the terminology that goes with welding! Lol! And it was a great video!
That blue thing inside is a ct coil, it checks for amperage and the welder turns on the gas when you weld and turns it off when you’re not to save gas and to prevent a room filling up with gas and killing you
yeah thats what im thinking too
Current
@@ianhine4012 We measure current as amperage so it's the same thing.
There’s nothing better than working through a problem and finding the solution. Thank You for sharing! Ric
The joy of Soblem prolving
That last bird pic was Outstanding!! Especially seeing it in stages to fini!
I love the process of elimination tactics you use on your work Doug.... Keep it up my friend...
Thank you for sharing the reality of real life. You can plan your day all you want… but then reality takes hold and you have to adjust for it. Sometimes that means adjusting your expectations. No use getting angry… it just. Love the overlay from Earl Nightingale. Sums it up nicely. So wish this was taught in school.
Good job brother. Using your head for more than just a hat rack.
I love watching your process
Get an ultrasonic cleaner for stuff like the solenoid .....usefull for a lot of stuff
When using CO2 it is actually not MIG (Metal Inert Gas) it is MAG (Metal Active Gas). Argon is inert CO2 is active.
Interesting video
Cheers Doug
Another fine problem-solving demonstration--binary search!
Doug, you are a very smart/wise/patient man. I strive to be more like you. You are a inspiration to many others as well im sure. thank you.
Boa tarde você pode me ajudar eu suitcase Xtreme 12 Vs placa de voltagem Me273260 tá ruim eu quero comprar gosto muito do seus vídeos
@13:28 Some of your nicest welds 😄
It could have had a new board at some stage which has the safety feature... See if there is a part number.. or look and compare pictures...
Use the cam to watch the gas while you test weld
CCTV on the dials 😻
Bad ground on the for the 12VS maybe, Is your 12VS grounded to the work like the welder?
maybe put another regulator on the 12VS wirefeeder gas input
How do you tackle the board on these machines with a multimeter? Having issues with my 4pin receptical and im worried its an issue inside the board
What about your camera zoomed in on the gauges and a tripod as your second set of eyes?
Having full size gas tanks onboard qualifies as a work boat.
Probably a dumb question, but you do have fans blowing that C02 (heavier than air. Could fill the hull bottom up.) Outta there right?
I’m exhaling more CO2 than the weld uses in a day and there is a nice breeze without the blowers, so it’s not going on my need for concern list.
@@SVSeekeryou produce in 1 day by breathing 1 minutes worth of co2 shielding gas output at 20cfm……..
Do you have an extra web cam? Put that on the gas bottle flow meter and look at that with your SmartPhone?
Can't be 100% on your feeder. But all the manuals i see list a 3 second sense timer after trigger pull to make sure the current is flowing if no current draw after3 sec. Power is shut off to contactor and gas. That looks exactly like what's happening in the video. Maybe when you were building Seeker and the gun was laying down you got a arc in the first 3 seconds and the welder keep power going till you shut it off. Next time you try it. wire down the trigger switch and see if it shuts off gas and welding current after 3 sec and then the feeder after 2 minutes it's all the same safety features and would be a good test to confirm what's happening.
Could be.
Does the gas even make a noticeable difference if you're using flux core? Like if it stops flowing will you notice it in the weld
Yes, it really does. You will notice it right away.
You'll notice it really fast if paying attention. Spatter and porosity.
So my 316L stick electrodes have about 4 times the total thickness of flux as a 7018. That's why you can't use only flux for stainless with a mig, not enough volume of flux.
Ya so you’ve definitely done this before and know what you’re doing
Just crossed Dauphin Island bridge, was a junk passing under, you guys headed west?
Cool! But not us. I'm welding on the main yard today.
I've had to back shoot mine before after to many days in the dirt, these old welders live a hard life.
I get stupid beetles that like to build their nests in airline connections, had to fix my roofing torch the other day because of the ass holes
I have the same reason not TIG welding, but with stick. 316 stick welds so easy, its like cheating.
Was filter the problem?? Which one ??
Yes. Dirt in the screen at the solenoid valve.
if it slags you should drag
not sure if you switched or not but once you figured out it wasn't the bottle or regulator you should just switch to compressed air to not waste your gas. i'm not a welder by any means and i don't know how long those bottles last but i imagine its a pain to get refilled ones onto seeker
Did you say 15 cubic ft per hour?
so why can you not move the gas feed position to a better spot ? 😎
Hose is kinked inside your suitcase if someone over tightened hose and spun it inside the box
I have the new arc reach suitcase and it does the same thing except after the power and gas turn off the wire speed goes to full, I thought it was a convenience feature so you didn't have to wait forever when spooling out some wire without having to open it and hit the jog button
I have tried wiring my trigger open but my gas feed is still irregular..... Can anybody help ?
little acorns
Not really related tk this but I ran across a guy in pesocola Mike who owned a sail boat salvage yard called southern cross ships chandlery all kinds of goodies in there mostly sailing related boat stuff
I herd you say that it was flux core wire if so I don’t think you need the gas at all and it’s just a waist of money to be using both
My guess is it is technically dual shield not flux core and the gas makes a difference then.
I'm first : )
👍
2nd
👍
You must be worried about pirates if you have to weld your suitcases.
: )
Difference in wire welding and TIG welding TIG welding is a flexible weld wire welding is not it is brittle
