Absolutely excellent video. As a woman of color I feel so drawn to Chaos magic, but a part of me, feels loyal to the magic of my ancestors. I am at a point now , just recently , after almost 20 years of practice. That it is ok to maintain my traditions and practice chaos magic. Thanks for this video it is so how I have been feeling.

Thank you for discussing the colonialistic tendencies of us white people to "snatch and grab" whatever catches our interest. It was always something that I could never articulate in such a simple and obvious way that you have here. As a Heinz 57 genetic distribution in my own ancestry, it always made me uncomfortable trying out different traditions like Norse, Greek, Roman, Egyptian, even Asian. I can never resonate with any specific paradigm so Chaos Magick is basically the only way I feel I can "do magick" properly.

that's a thing that literally everyone does esp if you're like adhd, autistic, whatever? like how do you think people find new interests? and if you can't relate that's unfortunate they're still humans people seem to forget that you can relate to someone even if you don't have the same gender, race, etc

Oooh, I'd love to come in here if I could, I think your right about white people but a lot of others too - I felt exactly the same with different traditions - but once I started searching (im in UK btw) it's a melting pot of tons of traditions that are also a mish-mash of other traditions - in UK, we have Norse in our roots, Roman, which is heavily greek (Britannia was a servitor created by the Romans for us, still used today) a lot came later from grimoires of Hebrew magick popular throughout Europe, and even Hebrew\biblical magick took from sumarian & Egyptian systems, and vice versa - I discovered there are no singular traditions or religions - in UK it's baked in our everyday, in our DNA - we find murals or statues of justice (goddess) outside UK courts, we ask people if they want a brew, instead of a cup of tea (witches brew) we bury our dead (Norse & Celtic, Wales even hold onto stone circles & language) - sorry for ADHD waffling - There's a lot of gatekeeping by people who simply haven't been on earth long enough to push everyone else out, trying to rewrite history

Chaos Magick is most definitely the permission slip!
I have expereinced that struggle you spoke of with my own culture. I did not want to have anything to do with what was considered remotely "traditionally Mexican" but I felt guilty. Like if I was a triator to my community. I did my own witchy thing for years but those thoughts were always lurking in the back of my mind. After some shadow work and wanting to at least learn more about my heritage I began diving into some of it and soon found aspects that felt more like "home". I now embrace it and see it as a tool for connection to my ancestors. I have accepted it as one of the paradigms I can shift to within my chaos magickal tool belt. I love that I found a way to do what I felt was right and also keep what I enjoyed and had provided me with so much medicine in the past.

I feel like chaos magick works a bit like learning to cook different cuisines. Some people like to really focus on specific things (pastry chefs, Italian, French, etc) but others like to try a broad range of things based on what they enjoy in that moment. They try lots of different things, and develop a variety of skills that they add to their repertoire so that, eventually, they are able to whip up their own recipes using techniques and ingredients which would normally not go together to create new wonderful creations.
Some purists may see it as not giving respect to the traditions, but I feel it’s really about showing more respect and that you are able to learn the principles underpinning things and adapt them in new ways.
Similarly there are artists who stick purely to one art form (music, poetry, watercolour) then there are others who create mixed media. Both are valid, it depends on what the person wants to create at the end.
I hope this make sense and that I haven’t completely taken things the wrong way 🤣🙈

what a treat! there's definitely a lot i could say about my own relationship with finding freedom in magick and spirituality // i appreciate how you mentioned that folks such as me, we aren't necessarily raised believing we should or even could ditch our heritage--even when something else could be the very course we need -
it's been tireless work for me to find a comfortable middle ground - on one i feel it is my moral responsibility,, if i'm going to live in self-love, to at least know (if not carry forward) some measure of tradition (or rediscover how my upbringing in our motis has empowered me in my life and choose to nurture that forward), but on another i'm instinctively artistic in my approach to magick and spirituality ;; i need flexibility and reinvention and the random fucking crazy blah blah blah in my nonseculars - i see my life as art (and i believe a lot of Black people do) -
i'm not a chaote; i don't call myself one,, but i've always resonated with your content, your path, and i enjoy some of the overlap between what you've expressed and what i, as a fencerider, tightrope walker, have experienced - thank you for sharing!

When i first heard about cultural appropriation i was clueless and had some really white privileged shit to unpack and look at. It was my value in deconditioning that allowed me to stop, listen and reevaluate my beliefs because they didn’t fit and didn’t serve me/the world/how i want to be.

Kelly-ann, you are brilliant. I watched the vid from 9 years ago, and was thrilled to watch this current one. You are such a clear thinker. And your ethics are very admirable. I, finally, ordered Condensed Chaos. I'm biracial - white, European and African American. My mother was the one who shared her historic roots with me. My father suffered a lot of racist trauma, so he wasn't exactly forthcoming about his background or beliefs. I, mainly identity more with European, pagan beliefs (the ones we know about). But, I also am very interested in my African spiritual inheritance. So, I research both histories, knowing that I'm kind of lost in the middle. Chaos magick may be the solution to a bit of uncertainty I have regarding building an authentic practice that is respectful to my European and African roots. If you (or anyone, reading this) have any advice, I'd love to hear from you. By the way, I am in my crone years - if that matters. Thanks, so much, for your thoughtful, intelligent videos. Makes me feel less hopeless, given the state of the world.

Hi Kelly-Ann, I do understand everything you are saying here. A thought that came to mind as you were talking; is about the goddess" Eurynome", described in the goddess oracle by Amy Sophia Marashinsky. This is the goddess of Ecstacy. In the beginning poem, she talks about Chaos and Ecstasy. The story is that Eurynome made love with Ophion then assumed the form of a dove to lay the universal egg out of which all creation came.
And this is the key; Ophion not content with being a creation of Eurynome and then cocreating with her, boasted that he was "the supreme creator". Eurynome knocked out his teeth and banished him.
To me this is the mysogonistic element that shows up and is negative in response to chaos and ecstasy. It is just as you were describing it in this video. There is more to the description to the poem than I can write here. To get a full understanding you really need to read the whole chapter in her book.
Anyway keep up the great work. I am loving this video. You are one brave and powerful soul.

I've been watching someone's content, trying to decide if i want to take some classes with them on chaos magick and various other things...and everything you've addressed in this video speak to why I'm having qualms about moving forward. There's so much of an edgelord vibe inherent in the content, and this creator doesn't usually call it out or confront it. They often side step it and stay on topic in spite of problematic nuance that might arise. And i get why they might do that...but its definitely given me pause in moving forward because i feel like in this day and age, we shouldn't be silent about addressing problematic behaviors. But like someone else said, chaos magick is one of the only realms available where it feels like i can create my own practice and find my own way without appropriating. I think moving forward with caution is key. Keeping colonial ideologies in mind so that i can question and deconstruct them when they present themselves and push through them. That's my theory anyway.

This is my theory about this: Chaos magic is chaotic, and those that work with those forces will be formed by it and thus become chaotic. The more you work with it the more chaotic you will become until you are like it in every aspect. This means that the Alignment of the practitioner on the good/evil scale is very important. If an evil practitioner of chaos magic goes all the way, they need to break every rule in order to mater it. Meaning even the 6 principles needs to be broken, otherwise they cannot master it.
Thus only a good aligned person can master chaos magic without becoming a destructive force in this world. There is a way to turn evil people into good people and unlock the chaos within and connecting to the Plane of Chaos. That is a Right Hand Path that actually believes power will be bestowed, giving a person that understand they are evil a complete ego death, by following the strict rules of the religion that they have chosen. The more difficult the path the more power will be given at the end. I personally walked the Seventh day Adventist path and I believe that is the most difficult path that anyone can walk. When you receive the Chaos, you can then walk the Left Hand Path and truly do whatever you want, and because you are good you would never do anything evil. An evil chaos magic practitioner, creates chaos in the world because all they have is order. A Good chaos magic practitioner orders the chaos within and affect the material world with surgical accuracy, and thus creates order.
An evil person that walks the left hand path needs to abide to the principles and can never break them, at best they can bend the rules a little bit. Accidents can happen so the power is not complete.
The Left Hand Path connects to Order, teachings you skills on how to use the Chaos that you received, to harness it and focus it. Chaos is Massive Black Hole, the Mega Devil, he is Chaotic Good because he absorbed all Light in the Realm of Light aka Heaven. Order is a white hole that adds Light into the realm of Darkness aka Hell. Thus Chaos Magic is Order Magic, or the Structuring of Chaos. You need both the Right Hand Path and the Left Hand Path in order to master it, when you have done that you can do anything. Break and bend the laws of physics if you so desire. This is coming soon. It is a matter of belief and a True Believer, which is what you become if you follow the Right Hand path of SDA till the end.
Light does not move, it fills the entire space it occupies and is stagnant. I know Science determined the speed of light and all that, but what they discovered was the speed of darkness.
In the realm of Light, Chaos came there to enable change. The White Hole adds stasis in an ever shifting realm of chaos/darkness. If Light moved, then space would be all light and not dark, but it is dark. Meaning that the points of light we see are static points that we observe in a vast tapestry of Darkness that moves. You can even cast a shadow on a planet by sending out a light beam. Light dispels darkness, it does not go forth, it just reveals what is already there. It is the darkness that moves. Anyway that is how I see it. :)

Gonna talk about myself here, before bringing it to your door.
I didn't exactly choose chaos magic. Chaos magic didn't precisely choose me.
I think, somewhere between my first and second instars, and my finding my feet as a full fledged fifth instar, there was a point where the chaos of the universe ... opened up inside me, and I knew what I was.
Gods, I never talk about me. Rule One: never make it about yourself.
Your magic is an expression of you, manifest in the world. It's all imaginary, and we all leave it sooner or later, so all anybody can really do is sing your song to the world and let it join in, make your music shape the world in subtle ways, and you do you.
When you show the universe how much you love it, it loves you back for as long as you are there. So your chaos magic works the way you want it to, because that's who you are, and I am so happy to have found you here.
Current mood music as I type this: Jean Michel Jarre, Chronology, 30th anniversary. The music I use in my workings.
I may be slightly stoned at this time.

Love. I'm attracted to these chaos magic videos (though I've not read any of the books yet) because the discourse resonates with my own idea of the flexibility I need in order to be "real" and "true" ...I need to be able to access "me" and go where I need to go when working spiritually and magically. (By the way, been skulking around watching your videos for a while and LOVE LOVE LOVE the authenticity, intelligence, heart, playfulness, and over-all vibe.) Anywho, I DO have an inner morality that works as a tether for me and lets me know when I'm encountering a kind of structure, system, or dogma that is out of alignment with my authentic nature. However and at the same time... structure, systems, routines, and rituals DO also have something to offer WHEN I can create those structures using the tools and ideas I've encountered externally and internally.
I have often likened my spiritual and magical practices to art (so I love that you mentioned art here) ...a painting has an edge, a frame, a container of some sort that holds the creation together or else the paint (the work) will spill over into oblivian and thus, the work is lost and cannot exist. For me, chaos magic (as I am understaning it so for) allows me to create a structure and create inside of it, finish it, and make another work of art. I can obsess over a "subject" that I'm painting and make multiple versions of that art, or I may create something and move on if it feels complete for me. So the level of depth is informed by an inner muse, inner truth, if that makes sense. It would not make sense to me to dig a well in a spot where, ultimately, I will not access the fountain so to speak.
I love the discussion about "snatch and grab" cultural appropriation. As a
flesh-and-bones-manifestation of the melting pot here in the states, I find that the multicultural sense of identity is a double-sided blade. I have certain freedoms of thought around my cultural identity and spiritual understandings but lack a sense of cultural cohesiveness in the form of tribe or lineage. To help remedy this, I lean into ancestor work and feel into those histories and stories as a way to build upon my practices without stepping on sacred tootsie toes. I'm still learning and growing in this area...an evolving hot topic for sure!
I'm taking away these two phrases: Gatekeeping, and Snatch and Grab. There's a vibe attached to each one of these phases and for now feeling/sensing those vibes in others and myself has the power to illuminate my interactions and choices in an in-the-moment sort of way without trying to pin a nuanced disernment to a dart board.
    Thanks Kelly-Ann

    I loved this video;
Your chanel, and that infamous video was one the things that inspired me to try "chaos magick".
Lately ive been doing a lot of soul searching around my relarionship with the "chaos magician" label. While in a sense its always a part of me, and i usually come back to speaking about it, i dont definw myself as one for similar reasons; gate keeping, superiority, and the "im the right".
Like you i thought the scne would ve open minded, but its very opinionated. For analogy its what reminded me of my "punk phase growing up"; im sure you can relate theres the punk rock elite- that seem to miss the point the most.
Id argue "cmg" is a way of life, and this point most people are. Paradoxiaclly when one gets over the "chaos magick" label, is when they paradoxically "get it".
As far as ethics, id say "its not my job to sell you my magick, im just sharing what ive found, and hopefully ill help another do the same".

Thanks for sharing your discernment on the subject! It feels like the principles of chaos magick, when viewed from a marginalized perspective are very freeing and empowering. In fact, as a queer black woman, we are always told what we should or should not do/be. So chaos magick can be like I sanctuary.
But when we look at it from a the point of view of very entitled fascist men, it almost feel like the exact people they despise are coming for their "privilege", and that could also explain the wave of misogyny, hate and gate keeping.
It's like free speech, it is originally a way of maintaining democracy but white supremacists use it as a mean to spread their hateful ideas.
I hope what I wrote was understandable, I'm French and tried my best. Thank you again for the work you put into the world. Take care ❤

“Chaos magic is about your own experiences” just reiterates how going on and saying “I’m a chaote!” and then “you’re doing it wrong!” is practically an oxymoron. (Emphasis on the “moron”)
You can’t say something is unique to you, and then say someone else is doing it wrong because they’re not doing it your way.
That would make it NOT. Unique.
Why are people? I just don’t get it.

I think people severely misunderstand the chaos magic. It is not about being eclectic or chaotic. Chaos - is the nothingness, it is a beginning and end of everything, it is eternal abyss. To be able to work with such powerful entity, you need to experience something beyond possible, you need to die and rebirth again. You need to live multiple lives and have old soul, you need to drop all emotions. Else you get destroyed if you once try to enter Chaos. Everything else what is called "Chaos magic" is just a hippie talks.

Yes, I’m here for the cultural appropriation/white privilege/cultural reclamation conversation 100%. My take on it as a mixed person has been extreeeeeemly controversial for my mostly-white audience over the years, with accusations of gatekeeping, etc. My most recent video (The Societal Shadows of Cultural Appropriation) lost me so many subs (good riddance to bad rubbish, honestly). So the fact that you have the self-awareness here of your influence plus your innate ability to articulate it is great. I love that you have the consideration of marginalized groups. 💕

I can see why chaos magick might attract people with abusive, opportunistic tendencies. It's a bit lawless in that it removes traditional limitations and restrictions. One of its biggest appeals is that it "has no rules" and there's a similar tone adopted in some of the most toxic online "manosphere" ecosystems.

Chaos magick feels so natural for me an anarchist. It's the ultimate refusal to be bound by conventions and traditions. I agree though...that's also unfortunately what makes it attractive to edgelords. Sorry that you had such low vibe energy in the comment section of the original video. You deserve better. This! Especially as a proper anti-capitalist, collective-action-to better-the-world anarchist! I practiced chaos for about five years before the Cheeto ran for President, and the amount of posting on chaos magic forums with all these disgusting white boys talking about how they were going to vote for a rapist BECAUSE they thought he might destroy the world made me so sad and angry that I walked away from magic altogether for the longest time. Chaos is the only kind of magic I'm capable of, but I couldn't do anything without feeling like I was endorsing these monsters. Just no.

what you say doesn't surprise me even though I didn't know it was that bad (it's awful you had to deal w shitty comments). when I first came across chaos magic, pretty early in my witchy development so like about 15 years ago (oof) first I was like oh these ideas are really cool and really fit me, but then I went looking for people talking about this shit and they were all these pompous dudes who took themselves extremely seriously and it was just bad vibes misogynistic smug all around so I let it go. In hindsight looking at where I am now I basically recreated a lot of chaos magic principles on pure instinct. I have ADHD and it's just the way my brain works when applied to spirituality lmao. And I think it's why I was so drawn to your channel as well because your stuff really leans into those principles without the grody package. And I think your explanations of why it draws those kinds of people are really interesting. I think the gender aspect plays a huuuge part in this, in my experience there are some dudes who come to occultism to buff up their confidence and sense of self importance, then they see a lot of the witchy spiritual community nowadays gives a much bigger place to women and so called female qualities like intuition, compassion, community etc, so as a reaction they go hard into the other direction and over invest in the intellectual stuff and looking down on practices that are more faith/emotion/tradition/community based and seen as more feminine (not to say women can't be intellectual, more as a social construction). Kind of the incels/tech bros/mra's of the witchy world. They think they're rebelling against Society but really they're just rebelling against Mommy.

    • @SkadiBella
      @SkadiBella Před rokem

And on top of that whenever I met women who were into chaos magic they were these really smart badass sexy anarchist academic types discussing Foucault while wearing combat boots types lmao 😍 so I absolutely agree it can draw amazing people - men too I'm sure I just have not met a lot of them. I can think of one who was influenced by it and cool and he was super gay. Anyway I think yeah it has a lot to do with how you conceptualize freedom as someone who has a lot of social privilege - so also regarding whiteness - and how toxic it can be to put freedom above everything else, it also becomes freedom to hurt and freedom to destroy, appropriate, ignore other people, have no empathy, perpetuate oppression, etc. So yeah if chaos magic is a tool I want to use it to be a decent person who lives in the real world with other people and not just in my head. Anyway great video felt validating somehow I might go back to this stuff a bit - sorry for the rant in the comments 😂😂

One thing that Chaos did, at least for me, was cut through certain self delusions. I studied kabala and vedanta to reach higher spiritual levels. Even when i was doing lsd and mescaline it was spiritual quest and i very much looked down on all the speed freaks around me. Bull shit. Magic is about power. Don Juan sais, the best of men are the hunters and the best hunters are the wariors, for they hunt power. I think Chaos sticks our noses in that, and thus attracts a more agressive out-front sort of folks.

There is something extremely ironic in the idea of those praising and practicing chaos magic telling you exactly how you cannot and should not practice and how you cannot be. How your ways of seeing magic, your way of thinking and being was so offensive and upsetting to them, and even the fact that they have the need to tell you that their way is better and superior. It's being an edgelord asshole and, probably, a lot of insecurity combined, ugh.
The concept of one thing attracting two completely different types of people is always interesting to me. Reminds me of this book series, where the two main types of readers could not be more different, with completely opposite opinions and attitudes, and there is very little space for something in between. There's probably a similar explanation for it there.
