I recently picked up the game and played a lot in a couple of months. Just yesterday I played a set of 11 matches against an absolutely obnoxious Armor King. I lost 10 games in a row, then I won the last match and he left. Even the 9th and 10th match were very close and I finally figured him out. It's really painful not being able to solidify my gained knowledge against that player I had trouble with. The next time I have to deal with a similar AK, I will have forgotten all I learned.

This is literally my same life bro! haha. Got Tekken around three months ago, fell in love with it - started to play online just wanting to get better at the game - it amazes me how people are literally doing this even in silver ranks. My theory is that as I get better my rank will just naturally reflect that, but I worry how long I will have to play so many people who only want to seem to constantly press buttons and do mad damage either through insane combos or throw strings because of this weird obsession with rank . It's a shame because Tekken is amazing when two players are on the same vibe.

It gets worse when you get paired against a low usage troll character like Lei or Kuma. Learn one matchup but there's 50 more to go. That is the appeal/flaw of the game. There is always something new to discover but it requires a lot of time, DLC money and patience of dealing with BS online play.

      I understand.
Although you won't forget everything you've learned, but will always retain some experience.
Just fight the same character again, and again, and again, and eventually the forgotten experience will catch up quicker.
The same thing will be learnt more easily the 2nd time you figure it out.
And eventually the knowledge will stick when you find an honorable opponent.

I started playing tekken 7 about a month ago. And my ranked mentality is simply:
If i dont know how to deal with a mashing Josie, its my fault.
If i don’t know how to deal with King chain grabs its my fault.
If the other player starts lagging, i leave the match and continue the grind for skill.
The most important part about improvement is staying humble and work on what YOU have control of and can change. I will not make my opponent’s behavior any excuse for anything whatsoever.

State-side the ruler and blue ranks seem to be of a higher caliber as of late. I also seem to encounter less toxicity. Maybe I’ve been lucky. Also, as for being demoted constantly, while never fun, it’s one of the best ways to get over ranked anxiety. Let the worst happen. Be demoted, even many times. Eventually you grow numb to it and realize any rank you achieved can always be earned back and maybe even become a better player in the process.

I think people not rematching due to not wanting to lose points in ranked is a game design issue. "I'm in ranked to rank up therefore I won't rematch if I don't think I'll win" is shitty but it makes sense. They need to add a modifier for point gain that increases as you continue to rematch someone or something.

I think people shouldn't know when the opponent is on demotion or promotion, it would remove a lot of stress and cheesyness. Also the game would benefit A LOT having less characters (but that's impossible since they want to sell new dlcs and so on) and having less chees overall (even this is impossible, Tekken has always been cheesy especially if you don't know the macthup). The game is too stressful and the behaviour of the people who play it reflects the stress they encounter themselves playing it, it's just a toxic relationship lol

Been playing Tekken since T2, but Tekken 7 was the first one I really tried to get good at. Last year I got to yellow ranks pretty easily after learning a few King combos and improving my whiff punishment. I went back to school to finish my degree and took a break from ranked. I stilled played, but only against my friends who are about as good as I am. School is winding down and I'm almost done so I decided to try to get back into Tekken. I hop on an I am getting absolutely smoked in the green ranks. My yellow ranked King got demoted nearly instantly and at one point I was just a few losses away from teal. At first I thought it was just rust, but nope some teal and green rank players have high damage combos, whiff punishment, strong throw breaks and are much harder to read. In some ways it's kind of exciting and inspiring me to improve even further. But all this said, its nice to know that it's not in my head. Ranked Tekken has moved the goal post.

Getting teabagged really means nothing unless you give it meaning. All opponents are your training dummies. They are random people who are not in your living room, so don't let their bs come through your tv screen into your head.
And ranks are there only to give you opponents that are near your level.
If you have 3 main characters and one of them is Fujin, one is Byakko and one is Juggernaut, they all feel the same to play except you are more advanced with the Fujin character and you will notice you are enjoying the low ranks more because you don't stress about the rank.
And why would need to get higher and higher ranks quickly because it just means getting harder and harder enemies before you have built the skills for that character.
Rank is just a name and number, so why rage/get angry/throw your controller because a number.
The only loss in Tekken is to lose your cool.

I get headaches and my mood changes. So I said farewell to ranked and I am enjoying normal matches since then. I just don't like losing rank. It makes me really sad and makes me hate myself. I've definitely seen the base skill for my rank go up a lot since getting back into the game, and strings that used to be very reliable are now frequently and severely punished. Peoples combo efficiency with level specific high damage combos seems much higher.
I still get plenty of people ready and willing to do very long sets though, and it's those death matches that make the game worth playing

    • @pandaro3622
      @pandaro3622 Před rokem +1

I consider myself a beginner and and just picked up the game again and got into red rank for now. Imo red has quite a few people who start playing a new character and already aquired some character knowledge from the higher ranks. Their fundamentals are on a different level than red ranks. The people who are actually "true" red players (usually 300ish hours of gametime) still feel very underwhelming and are pretty much clueless. To not sound cocky i happily include myself there. They can't block, can't backdash, can't blockpunish, can't wiff punish, absolutely can't break throws, mostly start spamming their shit because it's easier to do than pay attention to your opponent and counter it. And i won't blame them for playing like that because oh boy is it hard to remember the stuff and execute it. I have a high rank friend who watches and gives me tips and when he says stuff "you counter that by ducking the moment you see her sidestep" (Kunimitsu SS4 spam) i'm like, "i'm gonna try but this shit is not gonna work for my current skill level" Time to eat a bunch of "free" 40ish damage hits. A better player probably launch punishes that move every time.

Most people have it wrong. They just want to rank up. Ranked should be seen as a place where you have the opportunity to meet people of your skill level. Outside of tournaments, if you have a good mindset, ranked is the best place to both learn AND have fun. Internet points are poisonous. Ranks might seem impressive at first, especially in games like League of Legends, where matches don't depend entirely on you. If you reach Diamond in League by abusing broken stuff, you might fool some people into thinking you're actually good for a while. But in Tekken? No way. No matter how high your rank is, your true skill is always immediately apparent. Ranks look impressive. Skill just is.
Besides, you don't need to rank up to have fun. Play ranked, but forget about your rank. Play long sets, allow people to rematch and adapt. Enjoy the competition. Love the game.

So often I become very salty because some Eternal rulers literally destroy me and I wonder why are they not TGPs. Recently I keycharged a great Kaz player when I managed to finally win a single match after 6 or 7 painful losses. It was first time I did that. Because the thing I hate about ranked is that the stakes are always high, so because it is about getting to the next rank. You're not really having fun because a lose will feel more devastating.
You can argue the same for unranked, but because your rank is in the line: You have to focus and thus it's easier to get tilted by throws and 50/50s when you can play with a friend and you can have the benefits of ranked. Without the pressure.

But I do get annoyed when I get 3 or 4 people in a row playing hwo or yoshi and knowledge checking me the first 2 or 3 sets. Then once I win and get the read on them they leave. It doesn't really click to me. And as far as players getting better I feel like this was the breakout tekken. In games that have been around for a while even the bad players get better significantly. The same can be said for MOBAs and shooters like LoL and CSGO. In the past the mid ranks could not do the most mundane simple mechanics and now they can. I think the community is just improving. It definitely is smaller now though too.

I am by nomeans good at tekken.. I just play it casual for fun and recently got to warrior ... but what I felt was.. the hardest thing was to get out of those light blue ranks.. after you got into the green ones it became more or less "easier"... I struggled superhard with people around 40.000 tekkentalent points... while I first was scared when I saw my first oponents with over 100.000 or even 200.000 the fight against them was actually realy easy (and the still had 200 wins with the charakter so it wasn't like it was a total new char for them) .. but those around 40.000 to 80.000 talentpoints... was often crazy hard... like everyone is holding everyone down... ... I am sure they are super easy for those realy good players... but for the average noob.. I think the lower ranks are even harder

100% this. I just came back to Tekken and the Teal ranks are tough. It speaks to TMM’s point about the player base just being all around better now as most people have quit. Teal ranks have solid KBDing etc. When you see videos online of someone playing in the Dans or Teal ranks the gameplay sucks, but nowadays these ranks have decent players too. Definitely noticed no one wants to as soon as I adapt and figure out their bullshit. They take several wins and then I get one win on them and they quit.

I also don't know what's up with teal ranks. They are super hard when it should be easy because they are the earliest almost. I never made it above Marauder in green ranks, and often get to Brawler and then get demoted again with Kazuya. And then to get out of Teal again is hell, let me tell you. Pure knowledge checks almost and occasionally crazy whiff punishing and keep out from opponents. The latter makes me think they are smurfs because they evade way too well for such an early rank but perhaps they are just on their second character or played a big amount of quickplay and their rank is not representative of their skill. Because that is also a major flaw with Ranked und unranked. People can train for months on unranked and then join ranked and destroy you completely.

I've already got thick enough skin against toxic people, quitters, cheaters. I've gotten used to that most people I fight in my ranks are those who picked secondary character and are better than me generally. What ends up tilting me is the fact that things that are not supposed to happen or are impossible occur regularly. The passion for the game is gone. Fuck online. I quit roughly a year ago, got back into it due to hype over the balance patch which didn't really change much for the better imo I am a Kazuya main who got into Tekken with T7 on PC when it launched, first Tekken. I firstly started with Lee and that was really difficult, I then switched from character to character, with some success with Leo and Bob but I found myself always sitting in practice mode with Kazuya, I just really loved the way he moved, looked and it was so cool to hit an electric.
All my friends and people who has played Tekken before said DON'T PICK KAZUYA AS YOUR MAIN! He's too difficult for someone starting out etc etc but he interested me and I decided to make the switch, I'm Eternal Ruler with Kazuya and I play on a PS4 pad. I mainly quit due to power creep and the toxicity of ranked. I enjoy the process of ranking up and down, it gives the game a bit more reason than just beating someone/getting better, it's fake internet points and I like them damn it! Lol
The main problem I have with ranked is rematching... In my head I'm here for a tournament style Best out of 3, if the connection is absolutely solid and we're similarly skilled then I will continue to rematch pretty much till I either plan to stop playing T7 or they stop rematching. I enjoy long sets with characters I don't know that well because I learn a lot in a short period of time. Most people now days don't do that, if they lose? No rematch. If they win? No rematch... Usually because I don't get completely steam rolled so they know I could totally win the next match, and that happens to me a fair bit. I will just need a match or 2 before I start to get a solid read on my opponent. The worst is when you get beaten a few times in a row, let's say 3 or 4 and then you win, they don't rematch.
ALSO WIFI. Stop it. Get some help.

Playing MOBAs extensively in the past means I still suffer from PSTD when I play online. Honestly, FGC toxicity is extremely mild by comparison. As per the main message of this video, I have found that once I stopped caring about my rank and just having fun playing Tekken, it made the whole experience much better. I find it much more satisfying losing 5 times in a row to someone and slowly figuring out how to beat them than wiping 3 different players in a row. The former makes me a better player, the latter just improves a ranking that ultimately means absolutely nothing if your not a pro.

I agree with everything you said, people invest ego into rank and it spoils it. Green ranks seem to be getting tougher, I used to be in yellows but I lost it and am having a lot of trouble getting back there. A lot of people make it really difficult to have fun playing online, but the silver lining is when I find those chosen few who play adaptively, even if they crush me I see they're adjusting to how I'm trying to best them, they don't ki charge, they help me learn a character I'm not very familiar with, don't just spam knowledge checks until I learn them only to bail, and as the cherry on top they skip their intros and outros...whoo, they make it worth it, they remind me how fun this game can be.
I completely get someone not rematching if they're way better than me, especially in ranked. But I've had a few people that were obviously better at the game, and would kind of tone down to give me a fighting chance. Like, they'd stop playing super aggressive, they'd do less optimal combos, wouldn't punish quite as hard as they could've. They'd still win, but rather than a complete blow-out, i'm at least getting a round or two, and learning about how the higher levels play. Those people are a delight to run into, I'd happily take a demotion to the dome for those kinds of sets.

Hey, i completely agree!! I mainly played tekken with my friend locally at first for a while before going online and we were pretty evenly matched.
But as we atarted playing online we both found it way easier. ( we voth play mishimas)
Because nobody was punishing any moves and just had weird punishable flowcharts.
I have yet to find a player as good as my friend online and it seems i have to get to atleast purple ranks to have a chance

Man my experience with tekken 7 online has been pretty toxic overall, I'm playing in american region believe it or not man I could not play any rank sessions cuz alot players are either not giving me rematches or are just straight up not accepting my challenges, even in Player sessions I've been getting kicked out whenever I join. Personally I dont even care about the ranks because obviosly tekken 8 is going to come out soon and its not even that serious at all, hopefully tekken 8 becomes an improvement and there gets more stuff to have fun with as well. My goal in playing tekken is just to generally improve no matter what

I'm a reasonably new player at ~270 hours of playtime.
At Yellow rank with Gigas and Chloe i find more smurfs than toxic players, which has been boosting my learning process a lot.
I find a toxic player maybe once every 30 opponents.
Pluggers hurt themselves more than they do me.
I've only seen only one REAL spammer so far, but this one was so bad, such an extreme example,
that i just fed him exp during 9 games JUST so i could practice against spammers.
I eventually improved and dominated the spammer 3 games in a row before withdrawing.
Pluggers are not a bother to me because they hurt themselves more than they hurt me by disconnecting.
Their willingness to get a high disconnect rate and a yellow/red glowing name is more of a reward than getting +1 to my victory count.
Though to me there are no obnoxious characters, just potentially obnoxious players.
The player makes or breaks a character in my opinion.
If i may toot my own horn, i've recently been complimented on Steam by someone who generally hates Chloe.
    Said he enjoyed our fight.
That made me very happy and proud.

I think player lobby is more toxic because you can get kicked for any reason. I can understand for kicking someone for low bars or wifi but don't make an open, blank lobby if you're going to kick people for high/low rank or winning. Sometimes they kick you when it's your turn after watching people play ahead of you.

  • @kronksstronkstonks6360

I'm a Juggernaut Kaz and ranked for me is coming across Vanquisher+ players using their lower ranked characters - especially Bob, Alisa and Lei, who will plug or leave if they lose, but constantly attempt to rematch if they win soundly - but won't if its a close match.
Its very very hard to enjoy ranked and improve when youre punching up 50+% of the time against people who have plateaued at higher ranks and come down for a dopamine hit, and who leave when you show the slightest hint of possibility at beating them.
I love fighting higher rank players. I hate playing v higher risk players who spam Bob's power crush, who run away with Alisa and use her closing moves, and who do Lei shenanigans, but the moment you start understanding how to get past those moves they spam, they move on to easier pickings.
I dont want to come across as a Mishima elitist but its often the mishima and jin players who are the most likely to actually play Tekken and not "Do you know how to deal with these deceptive or +frame moves?, of you do? Bye then."
I hate to come across as arrogant, but I consider myself to be a pretty good yellow rank Kaz. I dont often struggle against players who are shown to be yellow rank at highest, but they rarely rematch me because the games are often very one sided, but then higher rank players, at best, leave me neutral in rank progression as they only play until they lose (or get close to leaving). It makes it very hard to enjoy ranked when youre bouncing between these two camps with an infrequent middle gerund being found, whislt also dealing with constant crashes and net errors.
Also I play on Xbox so there's a pretty limited player pool. Whenever I play I tend to find myself getting matche dto the same 6-8 players over the course of an hour or two.
All that being said, I still love playing ranked over player matches. When I first started I went straight to ranked, with just under 1k wins now, and less than 100 in player matches - mostly from private matches vs those I meet in ranked and play vs outside ranked. I've met some great people through ranked, but holy hell is it a slog.

Got demoted by a Noctis spamming his running attack the other day. Tried to step it but it's harder than it looks and the problem is that it even launches on hit. But I discovered on thing. You can jab float it on reaction if they start spamming it. Guess what? After I won a couple matches they left! Shocking I know... Next time I faced a Noctis I did just the same strat and suddenly it was so much easier.

I've defo felt the level increase in ranks, I can't just be getting worse at the game, the only people that still stick around to play have gotten better/there's less players and so it's a lot more hardcore experience. People will leave after one match all the time, it's upsetting for the game to be frustrating outside of the game itself, to find matches etc. Imagine a new player getting into the game now. They will run into smurfs even in green ranks, in orange and red there will be people with 300k power on alt characters that know your character match up, Like for example I was playing miguel, and I ran into a yoshi and lili with 300k power, they automatically ducked ff21 on the second hit because they know it's duckable, an actual orange or red rank won't do that, especially not the first time seeing the move. Playing new characters is the only way I can continue playing, I have a kazuya with almost 1000 wins fluxuating in red/orange ranks, have a dvj in red, a kazumi in red, and now I'm picking up new characters.

I got a confession to make. To tell you the truth, rank mode has literally taken out the worst in me. I dealt with so much toxicity that it came to a point where I began to be toxic too. I was just trying to rank up my secondary main, Kazuya, and everybody was just either ki charging, plugging, or sending me messages. Then came a time where enough was enough, I then switched to my main character, Dragunov, and I began ki charging everyone I beat, sending mean messages, and teabagging. One time there was a Zafina player I bumped into after dealing with a row of BS characters. Xiaoyu, Chloe, Alissa, King, and Yoshimitsu. I was literally screaming my head off as I was fighting the Zafina (and I was playing Kazuya too that day so you should know how frustrated I was at that point). Even after I got a 5 win streak against them, I was still screaming my lungs out. Not in victory, but in rage. I even wanted to go to the chat after they left and send them a voice message of me screaming so loud into the mic with pure rage. Thankfully, they had their messages locked and I was just too tired to even bother doing it. I also remember bullying a Master Raven player who did nothing but try to mash and I kept countering them into quitting Tekken. That guy was pissing me off I just felt an urge to do it.
I know I sound like I'm an asshole and I probably shouldn't exist in this world like Jin would say, but Tekken Ranked made me like this. I AM WHAT TEKKEN RANKED MADE ME!!! IT'S NOT MY FAULT!!! To all the toxic players out there, YOU DID THIS TO ME!!!! YOU WANTED TO BE MONSTERS? WELL YOU ENDED UP CREATING ONE ALONG THE WAY!!! THANKS!!!
