Jack Burton, a rational, wise-cracking, long-distance trucker, is in for a big surprise when he decides to help his best friend Wang free his kidnapped fiancée, Miao Yin. But as Jack rushes headlong into the perilous criminal underworld of San Francisco's Chinatown, hot on the trail of centuries-old Chinese sorcerer David Lo Pan, the mystery of an ancient curse unfolds. Now, as Jack and his companions embark on a frenzied rescue mission in the heart of the sorcerer's dark labyrinth, Lo Pan's deadly minions, blood-curdling supernatural horrors, and a trio of unstoppable Kung Fu masters stand in the way of success. At that time, the film was losing money. Because of no publicity. I loved this cult classic from the first time I saw the movie. I've actually always liked John Carpenter movies. Nevertheless, John Carpenter movies have become cult classics. Still, most films made a loss upon release. His most successful film is Halloween. Dan Escape from New York, The Thing, Christine, The Fog. That was it.

    Historical Information:
A "Tong" is a fellowship group, and are a real concept. Tongs would act as protectors of the various Chinatowns across the world, as well as assisting new immigrants in getting accustomed to the local culture, getting jobs, and finding housing. However, the dark side came from when too many Tongs formed in the larger Chinatowns and they began fighting for supremacy. Their "hatchetmen" would often clash in violent "battles" across their locales.
As the violence increased, the nature of the Tongs changed to match. Soon, drugs, murders, shootouts (like above, and more "Guerilla-style" battles), and even a form of slavery had greatly increased the already existent anti-Asian sentiment to monumental proportions.
From 1880 to 1920, the Tong Wars would rage but eventually fade away, with the conflicts driving most of the Chinese immigrants away from the Tongs, and an aging member base leading to an almost total collapse. Nowadays, Tongs go by "Associations," "Guilds," and other more "peaceful" names, with Tong related violence practically over.
The Chang-Sing Tong (guys in yellow), are a reference to the Yellow Turban Rebellion in China's ancient past, and they represent the "better" or more romanticized side of the Tongs. The Wing-Kong Tong (guys in red), are a fair portrayal of the what the Tongs became. Kim Cattrall's character is a possible reference to Donaldina Cameron, a female missionary who took a personal crusade against the slavery of women by the Tongs.
Nowadays, the Tongs have little distinction from groups like mafias or mobs, just with a usually enforced Chinese membership.
