  • Welcome to my video, "Piccolo Trumpet Challenges: Essential Tips for Beginners and Troubleshooting for Experienced Players." In this informative tutorial, I will guide you on how to get started correctly on the piccolo trumpet or help you overcome any challenges you may be facing if you've been playing for a while.
If you're new to the piccolo trumpet, you're in for a treat! Unlike its larger counterparts, this compact instrument requires less effort to play. It's important to approach the piccolo trumpet as if you were a singer utilizing their falsetto voice. Understanding this unique characteristic will greatly enhance your playing experience.
Articulation on the piccolo trumpet is slightly different compared to larger brass instruments. The key is to use less force when articulating, allowing the instrument to speak naturally and effortlessly. We will explore various techniques and exercises to help you achieve a smooth and expressive articulation on the piccolo trumpet.
Building endurance is crucial when playing the piccolo trumpet. I recommend practicing for about 5-10 minutes per day and gradually increasing your practice time. This approach allows your embouchure to adjust to the demanding nature of the piccolo trumpet. Remember, patience is essential as you continue to develop your skills on this remarkable instrument.
One of the main goals is to be able to play an F scale on the piccolo trumpet, as most of the repertoire is written within this range. It's equivalent to playing a high C on larger instruments. Once you master the high F, you will have access to approximately 90% of the repertoire ever written for the piccolo trumpet. Exciting, isn't it?
Stick around till the end of this video, as I have prepared a set of exercises specifically tailored to improve your piccolo trumpet playing. These exercises will help you refine your technique and ensure that you can play the piccolo trumpet correctly in no time.
Whether you're just starting your piccolo trumpet journey or looking to troubleshoot your playing, we have you covered. Don't miss out on the valuable insights and tips shared in this video. Hit the play button and embark on an exciting adventure towards mastering the piccolo trumpet! Musical excellence awaits you!

Great video. What is your recommendation on how advanced should someone be on trumpet before starting on piccolo trumpet. Is there a certain comfortable range someone should have or some other milestone you should hit before starting piccolo trumpet.

Thanks for your thoughtful comment, Roger! Great question! First of all, if you don't have a developed range on the big trumpet, you won't have one on the little trumpet. The piccolo trumpet makes high notes easier, but it doesn't make high notes in and of itself. You probably need to have a pretty good handle on the big horn before you dive in head first on the pic. I do think that the piccolo can help train you to not overexert on the bigger horn. I tend to think that if you are a pretty serious high school trumpet player, you can start experimenting with the pic. Definitely college. I hope this helps.

Hi Christopher thanks for posting this. I’ve seeking a workable practice routine to incorporate practicing with Picc. I have a Benge Picc that is the old Selmer type shape. I noticed that you played your ‘A’s on 3 rather than 1&2. Is that an instrument thing?

I typically use third valve because it is better in tune in F major on the piccolo in my experience. Since most piccolo's don't have a first slide trigger because the slide is so small, that seems to work better for me. The 1-2 combination is just a little too high and the 3rd valve does the trick. Thanks so much for watching!!
