    This is a really nice kit and an awesome gift to your son. I really like your use of the heat shrink tubing....Nice:). If there was anything that I would add to this kit, it would be 1.) Some duct tape. Good fire tinder and repairs holes in clothes, gear etc. 2.) More cordage. I recommend micro cord at least 20ft. It's stong and doesn't take up a lot of space. Last but not least number 3.) Anti diarrhea medication. You can't take care of business if you have the trots. I know that this is a gift to your kid and it is a fantastic foundation for him to build and expand on. Great job dad. Keep it up.

    Great use of the shrink tube. You might want to add a couple of water purification tabs and a tiny flashlight of some kind in case you have to dig through you hit in the dark. I also pack any extra space with cotton balls for use as tinder and prevent rattling and movement. Good kit overall, good job!

    Priority list for emergency survival kit: hope /morale, shelter, water, signaling.
    Strong food grade plastic bag and water purification tabs, Gorilla tape, floss, heavy duty aluminium foil, emergency contact list. (in case phone brakes or is stolen in an urban setting.)

    My thoughts: you said you were putting this kit together for your son; did he have any input? Does he have the skills to survive on his own? Does he know how to use any of the tools in the kit? Also, is he more likely to be in a remote wilderness or urban environment? The four main elements to cover are fire, shelter, water and food. A kit this size will likely not be able to cover much in the way of shelter, so best to focus on fire, water and food, and add in some signaling and navigation tools. Personally I am not a fan of the Altoid tin kit because of size limitations. I prefer a Maxpedition Mini organizer so I can carry more substantial tools:
    Mini Pocket Organizer Maxpedition
    Multi Tool Victorinox Farmer
    Folding Knife Gerber LST
    Flat Steel Diamond Sharpener EZE-Lap
    Pry Bar 4" County Comm Widgy
    Lighter Bic
    Lighter Sleeve Exotac
    Ferrocerium Rod 4" X 5/16" Bayite
    Steel Striker Bayite
    Magnesium Rod 3" X 3/8" Firesteel
    6 Lifeboat Matches & Strike Pad Best Glide
    4 Tinder (waxed cotton) Tinder Quik
    Large Mylar Sheet 96" X 60" Survive Outdoors Longer
    Bandanna (red) 26" X 26"
    Water Filter Straw HydroBlu
    Replacement Pre-Filter HydroBlu
    HD Plastic Water Bag (1L) WhirlPak
    Water Purification Tablets AquaTabs
    Solar Water Disinfectant Bag Tortoise Gear
    Large Bandage (Neosporin) 4" X 1.75" BandAid
    2 Small Bandages (Neosporin) 3" X .75" BandAid
    Large Patch Bandage 2" X 3" BandAid
    Knuckle Bandage 1.5" X 3" BandAid
    Antiseptic Towlette
    LED Flashlight MagLite
    AAA Battery Duracell
    Battery Storage Tube Bison Designs
    Signal Mirror BCB Adventure
    Compass Silva
    Whistle JetScream
    2 Sheets All Weather Paper 3" X 5" Rite In The Rain
    Pen Fisher Space Pen StowAway
    Pen Refill Cartridge Fisher Black Ink Medium Point
    Duct Tape 30" X 2" Black FlatPack RediTape
    HD Braided Carpet Thread 12-15 ft Generic
    1 Large Zip Tie Generic
    2 Medium Zip Ties Generic
    2 Small Zip Ties Generic
    Since I am constantly reevaluating my gear and improving my skills, there are already some additions and changes I want to make:
    2nd water bag WhirlPak
    snare wire Fourdrinier
    better cordage 100 ib test Spiderwire or bank line
    braided fishing line 12 ib test Spiderwire
    braided fishing line 65 ib test Spiderwire
    fish hooks w/ leaders
    newer compass Suunto or Brunton
    spare battery in straw instead of Bison tube
    Live Fire Sport
    Trend dual grit sharpener card
    Anyway Bro, just my two cents (actually it was just over $300!) for what it's worth. The real deal is to get out in the woods with your kid and teach him how to use what he's going to carry, and enjoy teaching him to be self reliant. Best of luck!

    Nice kit! It definitely needs a whistle (essential communication item) and a flashlight. You want to be rescued, whether in the woods or in a building collapse. The Bic can be used but clumsy and difficult to use if you are hurt; also not doable in an urban situation where gas lines might be broken. Sugar-free gum can be used to fill a cavity if need be. It lasts forever, unlike the dental kit material. Box cutter blade seems dangerous--straight-edged razor might be better. I use a small triple ointment packet. Crimping the tin closure ever so lightly allows for a better seal; putting a widish ranger band around the circumference (over the opening part) aids in closure and waterproofing.

  • @ctomorrow291
    @ctomorrow291 Před 2 lety

    Love your kit but something important for u to know is that despite us all thinking hydrogen peroxide was wound cleanser for decades.... It's now advised based on evidence not to use anything but water to wash wounds. Antiseptics, especially hydrogen peroxide can cause the slowing of wound healing to sometimes an extreme level. The risks out weigh the benefits is what it comes down to. Also I also just learned Neosporin can cause antibiotic resistance and petroleum jelly w a bandage works just as well.
    "Soap can help if the wound is really grimy, but you have to make sure that any grit or dirt is completely rinsed away. Don't use alcohol, iodine, peroxide, or anything harsh that can damage the tissues and delay healing.12"
    Hydrogen peroxide is however useful for many other things. Just not wound care. :)
    Thanks for the video still great info overall

    • @jakealexander3024
      @jakealexander3024  Před rokem

      Hydrogen peroxide is used to debris foreign objects from the wound the moment that it occurs. It’s not intended for daily wound care. In a survival kit we’re using this to help you in short window of time until you can make it to medical care. Docs at my hospital Still prescribe Neosporin for small wounds on the unit. Pretty common practice. Thanks for the comment!

    I have come to believe the real benefit of an Altoids tin is containing a fire starting kit. Just that, no more. Every time I go out I carry a knife, tarp, etc, so just having a guaranteed fire is enuf to expect from such a small container. Matches, lighter, ferro rod, cotton balls. Good enuf.

    • @Eidolon1andOnly
      @Eidolon1andOnly Před 2 lety +2

      A nail can also be used as an auger (like a drill bit) to create holes in wood, it could be used as a nail with a simple stone used as a hammer, and among other uses it can be used as a leather punch to make holes the sewing needle can't make in thicker materials, or even as a sinker for fishing. Another good use is as a nut pick if you come across wild tree nuts. A nut pick allows you to scrape the nut out of a cracked nut without having to smash the nut further than simply cracking it open. I've also found that depending on the nail, the tip can be used on some Philip's head screws or the edge of the head of the nail can be used for flat head screws as a screw driver. Really when it comes to anything, you're only limited by your imagination.

    Looks like a fun little project. Not to criticize your efforts but as a "Survival" kit it is sorely lacking. In fact, I do not call my kit other than a get home bag and it weighs 11 lbs in a cloth fishing creel with a shoulder strap. Without covering all of your core needs these "miniture Survival tins" are just toys. In fact, I will surmise that a true survival kit would be too heavy as to require it be carried in a car or van. Getting home to your supply's and shelter needs is the only challenge and a 3 day get home bag is what is needed in 99.9 % of the time. Just saying :)

    • @alimfuzzy
      @alimfuzzy Před 6 měsíci

      Survival kits can be any size. How well they keep you safe and alive is a different beast all together. These mini survival kits, work of the principle of the best survival kit is the one you have on you. Meaning these would be with you all the time and small enough that you don't leave it at home. They probably won't make your life comfortable for three days but could save you (with knowledge and a calm mind) for the few hours/days until rescue teams find you. You'd be struggling, but it is better than just having keys and a phone with no signal that most people would have.
      If it eases your peace of mind, you can call them EDC kits.
