Interview with Anders of Nordjevel 2023

This interview was recorded at the black metal festival "Mörkaste Småland" in Hultsfred, Sweden, 2023. We talk to Anders, the singer of Nordjevel, and Odhinn, music/lyrics composer.

We dive deep into topics like religion, satanism, hatred, fear, society and more. Odhinn has died - twice!! and you will hear about his experience of dying. This was recorded for the movie "In the Shadow of the Horns" that you can watch on www.zeezome.com.
The movie is about occultism, mutilation, satanism, true crime (not the Norwegian stuff) and extreme music. We dig deep into the minds of metal bands and untold true crime stories, edited in a new way. We travelled the world to interview these bands: Rotting Christ, Asagraum, Necrophobic, Sólstafir, Gravespawn, Martyrium, Nordjevel, Shining, Misþyrming, Sahhar, Nervosa, Auðn.

I like to listen to black metal, Nordjevel etc. I am a bit younger than the first wave generation of black metal heads. But not too young. I consider black metal music revolutionary, because the ideas, aesthetics, energies explored in that art form is something new - the expression of Dionysian aesthetics. I have all the respect in the world for the musicians, but still I feel generally black metal musician fail to express in words what is the essence of black metal. Like I mentioned in other places, I think black metal is the aesthetics of opposition, but it can stand for more than rebellion or misanthropy -- for example radical transformation and a state of ecstasy, and even much more than that. Where it finds form in words is Goethe, Nietzsche, Mann... and there is of course more.

That is where you as a individual person comes into mind. Rebellion or misanthropy. It does not matter how people communicate about it, and how you seek more subtle information from that. In my humble opinion, the only thing that matters is how you interpret it onto your own thinking. In the end, it all comes up to how you embrace your own emotions and thoughts around it as music. It really is about yourself, and the connection you can put into that. Perhaps as a opposition to aspects of general cultural behaviour, or whatever you want to put in it. The philosophical aspect, is something we as individuals carry around in our inner self. As we all know, black metal comes from a new wave of musical impressions, with roots in aggressive and usually follows a narrative of distorted heavy minor based writing. To explain black metal, I think the buzzwords as, individualism, rebellion, Anger, Joy, happiness and hatred we often hear, can be put in a gazillion of rabbit holes of thoughts. You think, therefore you are. Everything is in the eye of the beholder. Like the taste of fine wine. Some might even call it an ugly artform. And that is perfectly fine. It is a great time to be alive, to see musical subgenres evolve like this, and how they implemented their footprints for the last couple of decades.
